We went to Cafe Opera for the seafood lunch buffet. As much as I appreciated the decor, the service and the atmosphere, the food is quite average. As mentioned by other reviews, there is a wide selections of cold plates, however, there was no sight of sashimi, and sushi was vegetarian and didn't look appetising at all.
Prawns, oysters and mussels are all very fresh and didn't need any sauce to go with it. There is also hot food including roast, spatchcock and fish dishes. There is also good selection of desserts, however, nothing really stands out.
We used the entertainment book to get $45 discount which comes out to be $33 per head. Surprisingly there is a surcharge of 1.5% for using credit card, didn't expect this as it's such a posh hotel and the waitress didn't mention it when she took my card.
In conclusion, if you have the entertainment book then it's good value. Otherwise, there are plenty of other places to go with better food and better value.

We had booked a table for 2 on Saturday night for a buffet. We were placed in the tasting room which was away from the general seating area for buffet. Decor and atmosphere was romantic. Service was excellent and our waiter was very attentive and polite.
However food was somewhat disappointing for $90 per person for seafood buffet. There was a wide selection of cold seafood including oysters, crab, lobster, sashimi, sushi and prawns however seafood did not seem very fresh. The hot selection of food was limited in variety. Highlight of the night was the delicious macaroons however I would have liked to see a chocolate fountain.

It's been about twenty years since I had last dined in the Treaury Room. The room really appeals to me. It's like an upmaket European dining room (albeit large0 with a soft quiet efficiency. The dinnerware and tableware were impeccably set out, and the decked-out waiter in their long aprons really sets the scene.
We ordered the steak with a bowl of kifler potatoes. The steaks were excellent and the large bowl of kifler potatoes were delicious. We would have ordered dessert but had run out of time. The service was a bit slow, but we never did tell them that we had to be out by 7 pm to be in time for a pre-concert talk at the Opera House.
Next time we will make sure we have more time to enjoy the ambience and excellent food (a-la-carte).

After a lovely concert at the Conservatorium, my son and I were looking forward to the seafood buffet at Cafe Opera. We were Soooo disappointed! The oysters were miniscule and had actually disappeared underneath all the bacon in the Kilpatrick version. The pasta dishes in a large wok were cold, and the mussels were not only cold but tough. The prawns were fresh but there weren't enough.
In fact, there wasn't very much of anything! The best dish was the roast beef, but the only green vegetables to accompany it were a few sticks of tired broccolini. The puddings were nice but some extra cream would have helped. At $95 a head, this is a rip-off, not to mention $50 for a $10.99 bottle of Bimbadgen Estate verdelho.
We were wishing we'd had the a la carte menu. The concierge didn't even know that Cafe Opera is closed for renovations and the buffet is now in the rather cavernous Treasury restaurant. An the loo was out of order! Not a good look for a 5* hotel!

It has been a long time since we been here and heard that they have a special at $50 per head for dinner buffet, so came back.
Well, first impression is nothing has changed in the past 15 years as far as decoration is concerned so it is a little bit dated. Heard from the waitress that they going to rennovate in a couple of months time, so maybe that is why the special. Anyway, seating is very comfortable.
The service is very attentive from clearing the dirty dishes to refilling the ice water.
The food. the cold food are all pretty good. oysters small but plentiful and fresh. crabs and prawns nice. sushi small selection and ok. smoked salmon fine.
the same cannot be said about hot food. very bland. the best was probably the ham and even the pumpkin and potatoes are not very good - no taste and potatoes too hard.
Desserts selection were limited. but given the price we paid we were okay.

Took my family to a Wed night buffet to celebrate my daughters 8th birthday. Cold food was ok but no sushi but prawns and oysters were good. Hot food selection was nothing special and desserts were mediocre. We had 4 adults and 3 children. a 3 year old , 6 year old and 8 year old. My younger 2 ate next to nothing but because they took some bread and a bit of sweets they were charged the children's price.
Upon questioning they said all children were charged no matter what age, if they take from the buffet they are charged. This is news to me, we have dined there many times before but as the children only eat a small portion, they are usually not charged. I guess the policy has changed. So Be Warned all who take children to this buffet, especially those with toddlers. They Will charge you, a better option would have been ala carte.
Service was pretty good but the bill left us with a sour taste. Not very child friendly. Won't be going there again.

Attentive service, great buffet selection including king crab. Kids well catered for including apron and chefs hat at cupcake decorating table. Busy sunday lunch, so squashy tables.

Had buffet dinner on 22 Aug 2010. The nine to five magazine ad said lobster and scallops would be included. That was why we went there. However, we could not find Any lobster or scallops, dead or alive for the whole night. That was extremely disappointing.!
For the seafood, only the salmon, kingfish and tuna sashimi were good. The bugs oyster and prawns were just ok. The crabs were dry and tasteless. The hot dishes were not too bad. Desserts were disappointing. Service and ambience were good.
