This place is a bit too overpriced for dinner and not always at its best but what makes this place so special here is the buffet breakfast. Its truly wonderful. We return here time and time again just for the continental breakfast buffet. Its large and you could eat so much that it fills you for the whole day. Huge selections of cold and hot foods. Eggs cooked anyway you like. Pancakes with maple syrup. Fruits, cereals, bircher mueslie, oatmeal, yogurts, hash browns, sweet pastries and danishes are just to name a few. Having a long large and leisurely breakfast in this beautiful setting is an indulgent experience every time.
This has got to be one of the worst buffets I've ever tried. For $95 a head my expectations were quite high but was met with a total fail literally.
The seafood bar had crab which was bland, bugs which were bland as well, prawns which looked ok but once my fingers touched the outter shell I knew they were not fresh at all, as the skin was either really soft and slimy or had a sandy texture to it. The sashimi was the only decent seafood from the cold bar period. (oysters were available, I didn't eat any but was told they were fine but the other guests).
The highlight was meant to be the grilled lobster with some sort of white cream sauce. Lobster meat was tough and the sauce on it was like creamy, but that's it, no taste. Feeling rather disappointed so far, I decide to try the warm foods, figuring there might be something there good or anything they can redeem them selves with.
Peking duck. How could anyone get this wrong. Cafe Opera sure did. The wrap was cold and soggy, barely any skin in the wrap, more meat. The vegetables inside consisted of soggy cucumber in thin slices, didn't see anything else as it was a soggy mess. Feeling extremely disappointed now I give up and just randomly grab a bit of everything, nothing tickled my fancy not even dessert.
To make things worst the waiter serving us accidentally hit himself on one of my friends chairs. We apologized and asked if he was ok and to our surprise he rudely said "It's because your chair was out ". Now feeling disappointed and wanting to trash the joint as well we ask the bill and PO'ed literally.
I'm surprised at the bad reviews about the Cafe Opera here because I adore it! Some people are hard to please it seems. The experience is so special and some of my happiest memories come from here. The staff are a joy and are so keen to please. We have children and it is definitely their absolute favourite dining experience. It is rare to find a place where everyone is happy.
The desserts are glorious and I give them a 10 out of 10. I usually feel a bit ill trying them all because I can't resist them. I am quite piggy with the prawns which are always sweet and I find everything else delicious. It really is almost perfect. The problem I have is with the live musical which is ghastly (the singers ERK!) but other diners like it and to be honest in a strange way its part of the fun memory I take with me after the dining is over.
My advice is to go there with a happy heart and just enjoy yourself. Being critical and fussy is sure to make things taste bad. I recommend it.
I'm not sure what happened to r0zle, but we went for Mother's Day luncheon buffet. What a great choice. Having been to a few buffets around Sydney, we found this to be one of the best. Where do you start?
Food - the choices were wide. The seafood was plenitful, no lobster, but who can complain? The oysters were a little small, but still, very tasty. The hot dishes were very tasty, and not suffering from bain-marie-itis. Once slight disappointment, one of the dishes ran out sand was not replaced as quickly as demanded. The salads were plentiful and fresh, and the soup of the day, crab and prawn bisque was very satisfying without any overload of MSG.
Ambience - this eatery is located in the middle of the refurbished Treasury Building. Set just off an enclosed courtyard, the wonderful arched verandahs presents a great place to eat. The furnishings are solid without being heavy, and the table clothes are very crisp. On the ground floor of the atrium, there was a very competent jazz trio which added significantly to the dining experience.
Service - the staff were very efficient in providing water, topping up the (yes) bottomless sparkling wine, clearing dishes, clearing crustacean remnants, and answering queries about what other days the buffet is on.
Value - well, $90 per person is fairly steep for a lunch, but we stayed a good two and half hours, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. There was no rush, and the queues at the food stations were not excessive (especially when considering it was Mother's Day). The motto "pace yourself" (or Murphy's Law of buffet dining) applied very well.
I came here a couple of years ago and loved it so I booked a room here for my engagement party. The room setup was nice and our waiter was great but I was shocked at how bad the food was. The worst buffet I've had in a long time. I was so embarrassed and my guests hardly ate. The food offered at the buffet was not what was promised on the menu.
When I questioned the quality of the food, our waiter told us the restaurant was under new management and the food quality had changed. I am disgusted that a 5 star hotel has such low standards. I will never come back and would not recommend it anyone.
Very poor quality, tasteless prawns, the great variety of salads all contained celery (may be a special for the week). The lamb on the hot food was tougher than the desk I’m at. The labels for the food were all incorrect. Vegetables were tasteless. We had to ask for utensils to use for most of the cold items. I guess they were busy (doing what there were only 2 tables in the restaurant). Would not recommend, plus they charge $7 for a burnt coffee? There was no customer service buffet not explained or drinks not offered for top up.
This is a pleasant place for a quick lunch. There is a good variety of the seafood and cold meats with plenty of tempting salad combinations for the non meat eaters. We particularly enjoyed the antipasto selection and was tempted to try a little of each of the 8 hot food trays. Dessert choice was taste bud-boggling and the bread and butter pudding was irresistible.
All in all, try Cafe Opera for a bountiful and tempting selection of quality food at a fair price (though wines were a bit overpriced).
The seafood selection was good prawns, balmain bugs, crab, oysters and salmon. The hot food and dessert selction were average. Service was friendly although they let our plates build up... Nice dining room though. For the price I would not return again in a hurry unless the hot food and dessert selection were better..
