This little cafe cum restaurant at night is an absolute gem! They do a ribs night on Wednesday for $35/head and the ribs were simply magnificent. I can't get enough of the pork ribs, they were perfectly sticky and matched the red wine recommended by the lovely waitress. If you're lucky and it's quiet, the chef will talk you through his ethos and his vision for food.
I can see previous posters haven't enjoyed the okonomiyaki but I've got to say, I thought it was pretty good. It's a real testament to the Japanese and Australia couple who own the joint. They manage to inject a bit of "Aussie" into really traditional Japanese dishes to come up with surprise packages. If you want traditional Japanese food, head over to Azuma or across the bridge to Crows Nest where you'd be hard pressed to find places that aren't doing Japanese cuisine.
If you want a sprinkling of something special in your meals, a surprise for your palate or a subversion of traditional Japanese cuisine, head to Cafe Ish. I've done breakfast too and I love that they offer so much more than your usual high brow organic eggs and organic bacon combo (Sorry Bill Grainger!). Crocodile sausage and eggs embedded into thickly cut toast and matched to a wonderfully sweet relish. The coffees are wonderful too and a great start to the morning. The head barista is very skilled so try and head in when she's there.
The food variety was different but the flavours weren't very exciting. Portions are a bit small for what they charge. The only thing I was happy with was the dessert, but I would have preferred it on a plate rather than in a cup, which didn't allow me to avoid the bits I didn't like. The Kangaroo meat was a bit chewy and bit too salty. I also had the crab omelette that people were hyping about, which was quite normal.
There were these bits they put on top which I wasn't exactly sure what it was, it tasted like this Malaysian paste which didn't go with the dish at all, and was also way too salty. I think this is one of those places you'd go once for the sake of it and not go back.
Our first time here for dinner and was a little disappointed. Service excellent, with attention to detail, but not overly enamoured with the food. Had the okonomiyaki but it was drowned in a sweet sauce and too much mayo, other dishes, potato mochi, fantastic, and the crocodile spring rolls, just that spring rolls. However, we will go again for a second opinion, it deserves that!
The food here is good but sadly the staff let the place down bigtime. Me and my partner were big fans of this place until an event occurred recently that really soured our experience.
One of the staff approached my partner whilst she was there on her own and asked "how do you cope living with a boyfriend who only likes boring food?". This was totally out of the blue. When I was told this I was stunned.
I do not go to a restaurant to be judged on my eating habits or what I order and if they feel what I order is "boring" then I suggest they don't have those items on the menu. It's a shame they have to be so judgmental as they have lost this customer. So if you want attitude with your food order what you want, however, if you want a pleasant experience then I suggest you ask what they consider to be "acceptable food" to order.
I've been wating to come to this place for long, for their creative dish. However, today's experience was too disappointing. I order potato mochi which is like gnocchi. 5 coined size potato costed me 13.5 bucks. Yes it's really special and delicious (but bit oily and salty), but no salad, nothing and this dish is liked in pasta section~ also the guy (who I think maybe the senior staff, not sure coz he wasn't the person serving at all) came to chase us and take away our table when the place is not full and busy at all!
At that time we had paid already and just were waiting for friends in the toilet. What's the rush to chase customer when your restaurant is not full? and his tone was annoying and very unfriendly. Definitely won't recommend this place no matter how famous it is. No attitude, no good food!
I can see they are trying to make their menu ‘cool’ and ‘interesting’ but it seems to stop short. Food is heavy and meaty. They just didn’t seem to get the Japanese delicacy. Food is certainly overpriced. I don’t know why we had to pay so much for cheap frozen edamame! We enjoyed the local beer but I don’t think we’ll go back again.
Went to this cafe for the first time on the strength of an eatability review. Didn't really expect too much but was actually blown away by the creativity, quality and passion that Josh and Ai have put into their menu. The place, while nothing fancy in terms of atmosphere has a great welcoming vibe, and Josh is a generous spirit who loves to chat about his food and native ingredients and what he does with them. Very refreshing with so many jaded self important chefs around Sydney.
Everything from the three different salts and Tassie Pepperberries to the wild thyme roasted mushrooms and the yummy beyond belief beans was cooked with considerable thought to perfection. I write this with trepidation, and the hope that this fabulous new find (for me anyway) will not get so successful it loses what is so special.
Had the wild barramundi which was cooked to perfection, moist and delicate texture, it was on their specials menu. Creme brulee was delicious, as was the chocolate cake dessert. Love their use of native ingredients such as lemon myrtle, and the lime mayo + fries combo is a winner! Had a most enjoyable meal here.
Very disappointed about the food here. No chicken dishes, no crocodile dishes when we came here for a late lunch yesterday. Pretty much eliminated everything that I would've considered. Ended up getting the lamb special with a Japanese style ratatouille which was way too spicy and salty. Dining companion ordered the salami gnocchi which wasn't that great either. Cheap meal though but not enough to leave a good enough impression on us to come back here.
Went for the first time on a quiet Sunday with a friend for brunch. Very nice corner setting (this was the new place), close to the city but on a quiet street. Great attentive service, our glasses kept getting filled without asking. Had the okonomiyaki which was delicious, filling and had a very nice sweet plum sauce. The burger and chips my friend had was also very yummy. They have an interesting array of salt and an old fashioned pepper grinder. Interesting menu.
