SMH Good Food Guide 2009 - One Chef's Hat

Overview of The Burlington

Wooden floors, large windows, not crowded, simple minimalist bistro, up to the minute lighting, staff friendly and professional. The entree of white bean and prawn soup was excellent and brought back memories of Segovia. In keeping with the theme, I chose the pork belly which I was looking forward to very much. Unfortunately, it was very heavily salted and dry and impossible to finish (even with much wine and water). We advised the waitress of this and she said she would tell the chef. My companion had the liver which he enjoyed and was cooked to his request. I think that they are having problems in the kitchen just getting the execution right. We did enjoy our meal though and will be back, but if it is disappointing, that will be the last time.

I had lunch here (solo) twice recently. The oysters were so fantastic first time I had them again on second visit, if anything, even better. Chose fish mains both times, both excellent. Good selection of wine by the glass, excellent coffee. Must try to tempt MM across the bridge for lunch when he is next in Sydney on a weekday.

MM and I have visited several times since the above. Most recently we had lunch on 29th April. The meal was very good. We headed straight to the mains, anticipating cheese for afters. MM had the lamb rump, served with some of the braised shoulder. Fantastic. I had the pasta with spanner crab and whatever, gorgeous! The cheese selection was excellent.

Good local bistro serving marginally above average food. I like the touch of wines by varying sizes of carafes and the choice is good. It is out of kilter in the value for money stakes but is good if you do the lunch time special.

Small but good wine list. Lamb shoulder as mentioned is delicious. Try the rhubarb crumble, you won't be disappointed!

Went there with a party of 4 on Friday night, it was reasonably cosy and good. The service was efficient and, perhaps, the restaurant is slightly on the noisy side.

We shared everything, we had the chorizo and manchego croquettes which were "ok" - the chorizo flavour, perhaps, could have been stronger and would make it punchier.

Oh by the way, the "salted" butter with the bread (which is complimentary) was an interesting start. Though I also think overall the food is on the salty side (including the side salad which was way too salty).

We had the homemade pasta with spanner crab, roast garlic, chilli and tomato - this was the winner of the night. Definitely recommend this dish, one of the top few pastas I'd recommend in Sydney.

The Charcutteire plate was also very good and the pickles were surprisingly good. The sausage on the plate was probably the least tastiest part of the plate.

We also had the crispy pork with waldorf salad, the pork was average, though the waldorf salad was very tasty.

The 750gm beef was also a winner, the 60 day dry aged beef was yummy and recommend you ask the waiter for the horseradish cream when they ask you what condiment you want with the beef - it's a winner!

Desserts probably not so good a highlight. They were average/not special. The Burlington splice was refreshing and the better of the desserts. The strawberry eton mess was ok (something you could probably make at home) but probably not worth the price.

Overall a very good first experience and will be back for entrees and mains, probably will skip desserts.

We went there last night for dinner, the price looked reasonable but considering the portion it's on the pricey side. We ordered crispy pork belly for starter, homemade spanner crab pasta and kingfish with bean for the mains. My friend thought it was salty but I liked it very much. We did wait for over 30 minutes b/w starter and the main, the waiter did come around and apologize. I didn't really mind coz the atmosphere is lively but not too noisy so quite enjoyable. Overall a nice up maket place in crows nest, will come back.

We went there last Tuesday night for a romantic dinner. We hadn't been before. This place is unusual in the area in being a moderately upmarket restaurant which isn't Asian and doesn't charge a fortune. Generally we thought it was good, quite a few people there on a Tuesday, BYO Tuesday to Thursday. We had 2 mains with 2 sidedishes, shared a dessert and 2 coffees plus corkage, $120 which seemed about right.

Wow, the food is fantastic, only complaint is that it was very noisy.
Suggestion, have a dessert tasting plate, too hard to make a decision. We will be back, thanks.

The three of us were seated at the back last Friday. The cheerful waiter were, however, not so indicative of the quality of the food we were about to receive. We were brought one and a half small rolls to start. I cannot ever remember a time that I was given half a roll!. The prawn octopus chorizo cassoulet was full of flavour and is a great dish but it was presented in a metal pot boiling hot. I had to wait five minutes to cool it down. A piece of bread would have been a great accompaniment. Too much goat cheese in the onion tart made that course too salty.

We had the scotch fillet steak which was cooked to perfection. However, the chips that came with it were pretty ordinary and that plate was on par with a pub steak. There were chat potatoes and string fries as an additional extra. The large serving of quince and rhubarb crumble with cinnamon ice cream was excellent but the pear tarte tartin with honey was sickly sweet.

The coffee was warm and bland. There is an excellent varied menu but finesse lacking in its execution. Service was, however, cheerful and excellent.

Great little place. We sat in the bar to eat instead of the restaurant which meant we could watch the world go by through the huge windows which was great fun. I had the lamb and my wife had the kingfish both of which tasted amazing. Definitely have to order sides as the portions are a little small. Wine selection was good but definitely on the pricey side for what they were offering.

Service was excellent though, lots of friendly staff looking after you all the time. Even while looking at the menu outside a friendly person popped out and gave us his card. A certain German restaurant in the area could learn heaps from this place. So overall a great experience and I forgot to mention the chocolate plate we had for dessert - awesome.
