I'm an ABC (Australian born Chinese) and I went to this quaint Italian restaurant because many reviewers said the waitresses and cooks were Asian so having that Asian pride, I went to support my fellow Asians but to my dismay, I did not see any Asian chefs or waitresses. I did get served by an Asian waiter (not waitress) but he spoke fluently, and was willing to provide food suggestions.
The food was slightly above average. The service was fine and the atmosphere gave a very home-family feel. Would I go again? Probably not. Would I recommended my best friend to go there? Probably not. A rating of about 5-5.5 / 10 would be my guess.
We'd read all the reviews, but thought we'd give this a shot. Surely it couldn't be that bad?! Think again. Despite the fat there was only one other table in when we arrived, the waitress was incredibly slow to take our orders. We shared the brushetta as an entree. The tomatoes were so overripe they were almost sliding off the plate, making the rest of the dish soggy.
When the mains came, my husband's canneloni was stone cold in the middle. It came back after 2 minutes - clearly having been blasted in the microwave with a dash more parmesan sprinkled on top. If we had wanted a microwave meal, we would have happily stayed at home. It would have been a damned sight cheaper!
Never again.
We went on a Sat night before the movies. Apart from being charmed by the lace tablecloths (yes lace!) and the gold painted trellace (complete with plastic vines), the meal we had was very tasty. I had fettucine boscaiola and my companions marinara and a veal dish. The pasta orderers had entree size portions and they were massive. Way, way too big. If we wouldn't have been going to the cinema we would have taken some home with us! Food was very tasty though, simple and well done. We also had a tomato salad, fresh and delicious.
Yes the wait staff weren't great, but it didn't really seem to matter. Maybe we didn't have any high expectations? Like Bella Vita on Marion Street, Buona Sera is a bit of a throw back, but good, straight-forward food. The 4.5 rating (at time of writing) seems very harsh.
I've been coming here for about 10 years off & on and until about 3 years ago, this was one of the best Italian restaurants around. Not anymore. What has happened??? The mamma still makes you welcome, the waitresses are Asian as are the "chefs" cooking Italian food. Not a good combination. The waitresses are RUDE! Not like the Italian staff they use to have.
The bruchetta is good but most of the mains don't have the Italian quality about them. The lasagna I had in December was dried out & overcooked, the coffee cold and my girlfriend and I were not game to try the dessert. Her spagetti was served up like soup. I won't be returning!
Have been going to this restaurant for numerous years and lately have noticed that the standard has gone down drastically! I have had meals there which I enjoyed but there also has been times when I wished I had stayed at home and cooked myself! We have noticed that the staff always seem to be under pressure even when it is quiet, and I think that this is partially down to the lady who run's the restaurant, on more than one occasion we have heard her shout at her staff! Not exactly job motivation is it. If you are going to try this restaurant stick to the pastas as this has the least chance of going wrong.
I love this place! I've lived in Leichhardt all my life and this one of Norton St best kept secrets..sure the waiters are pretty useless but polite enough..and the cooks are italian in case you have it noticed, take a good look at the kitchen.
It is by far the best pasta I've ever had, similar to what my grandmother used to make!! I wouldn't go there for a steak or seafood, but the pastas are divine.
The decor and ambience is great, it really is non pretentious, you feel like you're in a real italian house, in the countryside. Pretentious wannabes stay away, go across the road to the cafe's full of wannabe's that hang out there! Glad you don't come and ruin this place for the locals and true lovers of Italian food.
Would you even call this a restaurant? Worst place I have ever had the misfortune to eat at. Food was terrible, service .....there was none. Party of 6, not one of us could eat our meals. Ordered BBQ Octopus, wouldn't use what was served as bait. Reheated mashed potatoes and frozen peas served with mains $30+. There are many places with great food and service in Norton St, unfortunately, this is not one of them.
Loved this place from the moment I set eyes on it. The cute terrace style and homely feeling.
Ordered the canneloni and garden salad, and also ordered at the table was the veal. All were cooked to perfection. From the rich tomato sauce to the melt in your mouth carrot and potatoes, it was all delicious. Will definitely go back.
It's all a bit kitsch for me, but my friend thought it was fantastically cute so horses for courses. Entrees were a good size (we had them as mains) and my vegetable lasagna equivalent tasted nice but only had a couple of peas and a slice of zucchini as vegetable. The rest was tomato. Eh. I wouldn't go back, it should be cheaper for food of this quality.
