The food here is fantastic, great sausage rolls, sourdough, tarts, salads, coffee and other bits. I am surprised there are only 4 reviews as well and that they are all favourable to the service, this place is notorious for their uppity staff! Honey you're selling sausage rolls, if you can't be pleasant maybe you can be faster. Fortunately, Sydney's most unpleasant barista seems to have moved on and been replaced by a much more pleasant fellow.
Avoid like the plague on weekends when the bridge and tunnel people drive here, great food but don't think it is worth joining a queue of a dozen people for. Seats about 6-9 inside, 3 small tables, and there are milkcrates outside, so on a weekend or at lunch time during the week you will inevitably be taking away. I love the food here but always have to balance out if it is worth dealing with the staff or not.
The above was written a year ago - service and seating have greatly improved!
I really like their food and especially their Jam Stick! Small little shop but good for takeaway. Sometimes you will find it quite rush to make a decision of what you want to have, especially when you see the queue. Also the cost is not for everyone if you compare to your local bakery but again, simplicity and quality is what customers are looking for in this kind of shop.
I go here all the time and the service is always super friendly, not sure what others are grumbly about...perhaps they're sour pusses that got what they deserved - ie a blank counter-hand. Who cares about service anyway, it's just buying over the counter. Often a queue, usually onto milk crate outside or in park across road. Who cares - such great pies and cakes etc. and really good loaves of bread and coffee too. There's also a Bourke St Bakery in Rosebery with more room to sit inside. Love them both.
This is great for takeaway lunches and getting pastries for meetings, their tarts are incredible!!! We get pretty much all our meeting snacks from here and everyone loves them and compliments them, so they must be doing something right. Definitely recommended to try!
I visited Bourke St bakery on 17/06/2008 and was excited about eating the beef pie. I had a few bites and when I got into the middle of the pie I notice a big clumpy chewy piece of fat. Upon closer inspection I also noticed a black hair! Will never go again, absolutely revolting!!
The food is fantastic, they make the best sausage rolls I have ever tasted and the shop itself is quite cute and cosy. The service, however, is well below average.
Like the soup nazi of bakeries. amazing food but bad service. The food, ok, it's nothing short of amazing. Every things I have had there is just always fresh, tasty and the best in Sydney. Their chocolate tarts, their lemon tarts, their Belgian hot chocolate, their sourdoughs, their almond and plum tarts, their foccacias....it's all nothing short of AMAZING.
The atmosphere is very cosy but if it was only about 5 metres bigger for the already tiny sitting area, it would be perfect. But some would argue that's where the charm is etc etc so I won't get too into that.
This place serves the best mocha I've ever tried thus far in Sydney. Love it. The pastries, the tarts and especially the sausage rolls are very good too. Love the chocolate tart. Unfortunately this place is a little tiny + squeezy, and service could be slow at times. So expect to queue at peak hours!
