Ordered the battered fish and chips but ordered flathead. Told they were fillets which you would imagine they would be anyway. Paid astronomical amount for 3 serves. Walked over to the beach to eat it. Soggy chips but this wasn't the worst part. Flathead appeared to be a whole fish cut in half, massive unattractive, unappealing chunks complete with pieces of fins and something I don't even want to know what it was. It was ghastly.
Took it back only to get something near abuse! It was inedible and frankly rather frightening. Will never ever go there again and you know what? They simply do not care.
I remember this place used to be really good, the chips were the best I'd ever eaten anywhere. Now they just taste horrible and dry. The fish is ok, but its nowhere near as thick luscious and crunchy like it used to be. Such a shame. Anyone know where the previous owners/cooks went?
We just ordered the one dish, a seafood platter for $75 and it was delicious. Loaded with fresh prawns and oysters, beautifully cooked calamari and two pieces of fresh fish plus heaps of rocket and spinach leaves and a small bowl of chips. The service was great and the waitresses were charming. For what it offers, a good simple, casual lunch time dining by the sea experience it was perfect. We'll be back.
We were in the area at lunchtime and tried it again after a few years absence. Bad mistake. Previously the food etc was good even though the take away service was slow due to many people ordering. It seems there has been a change of ownership or chef. This time the service was ok but the fish and chips were awful, the fish was fresh and thats about all I could say that was good about it.
The base of our take away box was soaked in oil or ? and the overall taste terrible we even tried to soak it in seafood sauce to make it palatable but even that failed. The chips were soft and soggy. We only crossed the road to eat it in the park so it was eaten within a few minutes of taking delivery.
The rubbish bin got more of it than we did, it was that bad. Hours later we still had a sour/bad taste in the mouth. We won't be back there for sure.
Won't be visiting this place again! Ordered a grilled fish and salad (for $17!) and was asked what type of fish I wanted. Little did I know that this "option" would cost me an extra $9! After paying I realised the mistake and went back to rectify. Boy was that a mistake! I was yelled at for placing the incorrect order and then was told that the whole thing would have to be thrown away because of "my" mistake. I was told that the customer is never right and in the end I was given the $9 back.
When I received my order there was a rubber band in the salad.
Before the change in ownership this place was great, we have been visiting for at least 5 years. We went last night and our experience was horrible, we won't be going back again! Ordered chips, one piece of fish and some prawns, was asked if we wanted to make it a fish and chips, we stipulated no because my husband is allergic to fish.
We received one fish and chips, when I asked for some fresh chips because of the allergy I was received with two very rude staff who proceeded to remove the fish and give me back the contaminated chips, in the end they threw some cold soggy chips at me and asked why I was complaining, they had just given me something for free. The fish was disgusting as were the chips and prawns, considering the prices have been increased and the quality has drastically decreased where we're very disappointed.
Overall a horrible experience, very sad this shop was sold as it use to be a lovely beach outing, you're better off bringing your own picnic to enjoy this lovely beach.
Have been visiting this cafe for close to 4 years now. Can't complain much with great service and the eggs benedict was great. My only complaint would be consistency in food quality and service. Had one eggs benedict still with the plastic wrap around the egg. Didn't complain and they didn't say anything hoping I hadn't noticed.
The rosti's are great and a nice change to hashbrowns. The sausages I found shocking as did my partner. The most important thing was the coffee which is good. Will continue to go back regardless of the short comings.
Ordered Salmon, received Trout, major difference in taste. Salt and Pepper squid used to be awesome but since change of ownership I would steer clear of this place. Took 30 minutes for the order and when I asked if the chips were gluten free they said yes, then I told them I was allergic to Gluten (coeliac) and suddenly they were not sure and had to ask, steer clear, very bad, and very very expensive, especially when you get trout for salmon.
The seafood platter for two made a very enjoyable lunchtime treat. Good quality oysters, and the crumbed calamari rings were particularly good (not chewy and stringy like you sometimes find).
The platter was well presented on a bed of salad, and the fruit was a nice touch. The homemade guacamole was great, though we weren't quite sure what to eat it with! The platter was good value when using the Entertainment Book voucher. The staff seem to be kept very busy here on weekends but maintain friendly, cheery service.
Can't comment on lunch or dinner, but this continues to be the best breakfast place in Sydney! And given that we venture far and wide for our eggs benedict and banana bread, Bondi, Homebush, Manly, Dee Why and Brighton-le-Sands are a few of our regular haunts, we feel justified in making such a bold statement. I recommend trying the lemongrass and ginger tea, even if just to experience the beautiful earthenware teapot and cup. We'll definitely be back!
