I do love this place, and reading some of the reveiw I do agree dinner is not the best, but on a lunchtime, its usually very good. Its about being content to browse the dishes as they come and not be in a rush, as the delicous, interesting dishes DO come out! the service is often not great, but for a vegetarian, its WONDERFUL to enjoy yum cha and know what you're eating!
OK for vego yum cha on a nice day as you can eat al fresco, which is rare for yum cha. However it's very expensive for non-meat food. I ordered two serves of dumplings and a pot of tea for one and it was nearly $20! Forget this place for dinner at night. The food is outrageously bad - TVP anyone?! Yum. We went for a friend's birthday and despite being the only table in a virtually dark restaurant, we gave up asking the waiters for water and went up to the bar and got it ourselves. Just not worth it - bad value for money.
Although I had heard rave reviews about the place, I found myself wanting more.
I was enticed by the prospect of vegetarian yum cha, although some of the food was great, I also found some of the dishes lacking in flavour and creativity. The venue is lovely, very well situated next to St Mary's cathederal and lovely views of the park, it had a great feel for a lazy sunday lunch, however, I found the service unsatisfactory.
After waiting 20 minutes for the dessert tray to come out, a waiter approached us with the bill (we hadn't even asked for it!), at which time I advised him we were waiting for dessert to be offered, he advised he would have some sent out our way, we waited another 15 minutes and as we were about to leave we were offered dessert.
Although the prospect of a vegetarian yum cha was exciting the overall experiences didn't meet the mark, after a rather pricey bill, we all agreed we would be better off keeping to regular Yum Cha in Haymarket.
Sometimes you wonder why does vegetarian food cost the same as its meat subsitutes. Anyway I found this place expensive, the vege skewers was expensive for 2 skewers and costs around $7.50.
My main, imitation duck, tasted good and my friend had the blackbean tofu which she loved. But still there are other vegetarian places cheaper and better tasting than here. I have not tried out there vege yum cha and would come back only to try this out.
I went to Bodhi for dinner recently and the place was empty, a shame, because a few years back it was packed!! The empty restaurant led to excellent service and quick, good tasting food. I was not that impressed, however, to see so many 'mock meat' dishes on the menu. We have so much great fresh produce in Australia, it would be nice to see Bodhi put it to creative use. Here's hoping Bodhi's shine returns again soon.
Bad!!! We don't recommend Bodhi. It is ridiculously expensive and the quality of the food was poor. The staff could barely speak English and when we asked what they had on their trays, they often couldn't tell us ("I can't remember..." was a frequent response). The setting is superb and it's a shame they don't UP the quality of their food and service. Don't spend your hard earned $$$ on bad food.
We arrived at 5:30 pm and received our meal at 8:30 pm, the service was beyond slow and the food overpriced for what was eventually received. The lack of service attention called for many repeat orders of the same thing, which were never received, but charged onto the bill regardless. A very regrettable and forgettable night out. Definitely would not recommend after this experience.
Great to eat here during the day and in summer. Evenings, especially winter, are cold and not inviting.
Food varies. The yum cha is good but it must be fresh. If they are not busy a lot of the stuff is "kept warm" and is not fresh fresh. The menu is creative and different, not your usual boring selection. Prices are very steap and service can be very average.
A nice relaxing place to eat during the day.
Make sure though to order your drinks very early on, they always seem to take ages.
We ate here on December 29th, a perfect sunny day. The location was outstanding under the fig trees, and we were promptly escorted to a table. The restaurant was about half full. Our drink orders were taken and filled promptly and the yummy yum cha was offered almost immediately. We tried about 10 dishes and my favourite was the dumplings in ginger sauce, and the traditional Chinese dumpling. The mushroom parcel (fried) and BBQ roll (fried) was also yummy. The Vietnamese spring rolls were also refreshing with nice mint inside.
A lovely location, delicious meal and a top place to take people to experience vegan food for the first time. The meal cost us $60 for three including a drink each, not bad value for the amount of dishes we tried.
