SMH Good Food Guide 2010 - One Chef's Hat
Overview of Blancharu
Modern, sleek restaurant located minutes away from kings cross station offering haru's culinary art. Simplifying his approach to food and letting his top quality produce to hit the spot. 4 full courses of your choice is offered at $70 and BYO is only $10 per bottle. How can you go wrong?
Had a really good time last night with a bunch of chefs, as soon as you have the bread you know you're in for a good night, with great food. Trout entree a brillant dish worthy of any restaurant in Sydney.
Came here on a Friday night with a party of five for the $80 degustation. All in all, I thought it was a pleasant experience and exceptional value. However, I have a few constructive criticisms.
When the duck terrine came out, my first impression of it was that the plate was very greasy/dirty. On closer inspection, the plate had been chilled and so it was covered in condensation all over. I looked at the other plates on our table and my plate seem to be the only one that was chilled and had this problem. Even a watermark wouldn't be acceptable in a fine restaurant, and a chilled plate is not appropriate.
There is a lady at the bar area (close to the entrance of the restaurant, separate from the kitchen) plating up food. We were in full view of her. I generally like open kitchens, but it is a personal preference that she remain in the kitchen with the rest of the chefs as I felt some of the magic was lost seeing her fiddling with plastic boxes and glad wrap.
The dishes themselves were great. The highlight for me was the mango and coconut panna cotta beautiful. Other highlights were the zucchini flower and the sweet corn soup. Waiters were friendly and helpful in the way they catered for one of our party who had food allergy. In general they are very good, but sometimes you have to remind them to top up the water/bring the pepper and salt etc.
In general, I think Chef is very talented and Blancharu has the makings of a very fine restaurant. I hope he will understand where I'm coming from with my comments above. I think I will be back because of the great value.
We had the degustation. Unfortunately, they sat us next to the kitchen on a really humid night, which really marred the experience. They also did not turn on the air-con...wonder why. Ok, to food: the execution is pretty ok. But the taste overpowers the state of the fresh produce, which I found interferred with the tastebuds. The chef didn't allow the produce to speak for itself. The highlight was the dessert and the first course of pacific oyster and ocean trout, lightly seared.
The steak tartare was too sweet: would have been good to have another taste to lift it. The blue swimmer crab pasta was swimming in chilli oil: again, you couldn't taste the blue swimmer crab. The highlight, apart from dessert of mango panna cotta is the attentive staff who looked after Mr Man's numerous allergies. Coming back. Well don't think so.
I want to like this restaurant, I really do but it does not seem to deliver. The entree of steak tartare was excellent as was the home made pasta but the blue swimmer crab was lost in the tomato sauce that came with it. The lamb for main was bland and the "Peach Peach Peach" dessert was lacking any peach flavour despite being a poached peach, peach jelly and peach sorbet. Probably won't return.
Very good food, flavoursome with a good menu. Had the veal tenderloin entree- perfectly cooked, and decent size serving for an entree. The other entrees tried were the ocean trout tartare, and scampi, both excellent. The lamb for the main course was tasty and tender. The wagyu beef was also good, although thought the lamb was better.
We found the service to be very good and attentive without being obtrusive. The portion sizes were generous, so maybe they have picked up a little after some of the comments below. This restaurant is definitely worth trying. Will go back.
Food was average. Tiny serves as expecting from a french restaurant but I was still super hungry at the end of the night. Staff took forever to bring over menus and offer drinks etc. and they weren't busy. They were just having a goood time chatting with one another. The strawberry souffle was good. The head chef came to say hello and he seems so nice. Its a shame his staff are slackity slack.
Sort of French, hardly Japanese, a very disappointing dinner from such a renowned chef. In his strive to be innovative his Japanese roots have been lost in an attempt to be a little Italian and even modern Australian. His 4 course menu selection contained smaller portions than the a la carte itself which would have been fine if this was explained to us. Not a restaurant in the one hat calibre.
This place has made it to the top of my fave restaurant list! Me and my boy friend went on Wednesday night and enjoyed attentive, prompt and friendly service all evening. The restaurant was not very busy when we went. We were served the complimentary warm bread (black sesame or sour dough) while we were deciding on the menu. We both ordered the $65 4 courses degustation and both the food and the value was impeccable!
The menu we ordered from was a bit different to the one I saw on their website, then I realised this was their new Spring Menu. For entree I had the scampi and spanich wrapped in light and crisp pastry, which was a very yummy dish and made me wonder how they managed to make the pastry so thin and crispy.
I also loved the handmade fettucine alla Carbonara, which was my pasta dish. It was so tasty and rich, and the handmade fettucine had a chewy texture which differentiates it from other pastas I've had.
The pork belly I had for main was also very well cooked. And I was happy that their portions weren't too big so I felt comfortable after eating the 3 courses and was enthusiastically waiting for our desserts to come.
And I have to say without hesistation, the highlight for me would be the dessert, I had the absolutely divine Yoghurt Mousse with raspberry and fresh fruit. It had the perfect balance of sour and sweetness and a wonderful smooth texture. It was really a superb finish to my meal!
My boy friend had the oysters, squid ink risotto with very yummy deep fried beer battered squid (this was also one of my favourite dishes), wagyu beef, and the utterly delicious warm strawberry souffle which he would like to send compliments to the chef for.
We both had a splendid night and the best thing is it didn't cost a fortune at all. Will definitely be recommending this place to others!
Went there for a birthday dinner earlier in the year and it was wonderful. Service was excellent except for a few minor hiccups but all because they were very busy but the food more than made up for it. Chef Haru came out to talk to each table at the end of the evening as he used to do at Galileo, we're his followers and asked if our dinner was good, a nice touch to the end of the evening. We had the set dinner and added extra for the Wagyu beef, really worth it and very yummy, will definitely go back again. Only problem was parking.
Enjoyable Tuesday evening dinner with Lil Neecy. We opted for the 4 course degustation allowing us each to choose separate dishes. The tastes were sensational but with all degustation you are always looking for just one more mouthful to cement the flavours.
The service was exceptional and I liked the manner in which tables were spaced allowing you to enjoy your meal while not having to over-hear other conversations. Not cheap but average prices for this type of dining experience. We definitely will return.
