There is a new restaurant open in this site, it’s called Bistro Bruno, and I ate there on Saturday night with my wife and another couple. The service was excellent; food was very good but not spectacular. However, it’s well priced and you definitely get value for money. The main point of note is that this is still a really beautiful dining room, the ambience is great and it’s in a fantastic spot.
Word travels fast in Balmain (they don’t call it the insular peninsular for nothing!) And the original Bistro Stock was superb. The new owners definitely have the right idea, good food, great service and very friendly and warm atmosphere. With a little tweaking they could take this restaurant back to its former glory.
Completely agree with these reviews above. It lacks in good food and wine for the price you pay. And the service was really bad with this blonde grumpy waitress that served us. I'm sorry but I won't come back unless read better reviews...
With a large number of restaurants in and around the area, I wouldn't rush back to Stock. Everything's okay - it's BYO, good range of dishes on the menu, the food is pretty good, but nothing spectacular (for around $31 a main).
The calamari entree was nice but let down by very ordinary tomato salad. A couple of things they could improve - we had the table near the wall mounted wine rack. While most patrons were BYO-ing, someone wanted to buy wine there so we had 2 waiters reaching over our table and our heads to get to the wine rack. The tables are also quite close together which could be too cosy.
We had the cheese plate for dessert - one of the pieces of cheese was absolutely tiny and the other 2 were pretty stingy sizes too.
This was my first trip to Bistro Stock in about 18 months and on arriving it was clear there had been a change of ownership. The wait staff were polite and eager but unfortunately unorganised. I hoped the change in ownership had just happened which would explain the waitstaff, but when I asked I was told it had been a while.
The food was the old prices but the quality of the food was bad (tried to think of kinder words but really couldn't). I only had a steak and I couldn't eat it, it was so badly cooked. My partner had a risotto which he also found he couldn't eat. The wine list is also very limited and we had to go to the bottleshop after arriving there.
Given the price (which is the same or very similar prices as before) the quality of the wine list and the food, should be much better. I'm afraid I have to suggest that even if you are after somewhere for a simple meal don't go here until it improves (which I hope it does), just go to one of the pubs and you will have a much much better meal. Very sad it has changed so substantially.
I believe it's now been taken out of the SMH GFG... Unfortunately, 2007 has been a disaster for what was once a fantastic restaurant. I hope they're starting to pull it back together, good news that the waiter has been replaced. May be worth another visit, I'll post an update.
After reading the mixed reviews for this place, I was slightly apprehensive about taking the hubby here for our 8 year anniversary. However, being the daredevils we are, we braved the horrible weather and were well rewarded for doing so!
We found the service to be great, the staff were very friendly and professional, the food tasty and perfectly portioned. We had a lovely evening and would definitely return.
This used to be a favourite of ours, as our mid week local where we could have a great meal at a reasonable price and BYO. Unfortunately since it has changed management, it has slipped a little. The food is not where it could be and the floor staff seem to be a little inexperienced at times. Hopefully it might improve as the new team settles in. It is a little way off the SMH GFG rating at the moment.
