I have to agree with Pepper_bird below that while there was nothing wrong with any of our course, Bistro Ortolan just didn't wow me. And I certainly expected a lot more from One Chef's hat.
My confit of Duck entree was nice and set my expectations high for the rest of the evening. Unfortunately, my main (Venison) was lukewarm at best and the rest of the items on the plate were almost cold. Flavour-wise, it was nothing memorable. My dining companions ordered the Special, Beef Tenderloin with Bernaise Sauce and the waiter proceeded to spoon their sauce onto my dish because they looked pretty much the same. The beef was also a bit more expensive (around $20?) than the other mains, but the actual dish did not seem to justify that.
Desserts and cheese platters were great, but unfortunately, the mains were a huge letdown and because of that, I would be unlikely to return.
This is the second time I've eaten here and it even outdid my birthday celebrations. Everything was outstanding. The degustation is sensational even if I am now on the verge of bursting! BYO is an added bonus although the matched wines are always brilliant. It's not the cheapest degustation in town but certainly up there with the best. It's like being in Paris. The staff are also excellent.
With French food being our favourite, this has become a regular for us being both close to home and also one of the most exquisite restaurants in Sydney. Go during the week and it is BYO if you wish to take a special bottle of wine.
Having written previous reviews on this place which I know you have all seen and appreciated not much more to say except that it is well worth the experience if you enjoy complex French food. Only suggestion is to request a table downstairs.
Last thursday was my first dining experience at Bistro Ortolan, and what an experience it was. Amazing! Not only was our food beautiful to look at but tasted great as well.
The service was attentitive but not intrusive, and the wines complemented the food perfectly. Such a rare gem in a surburb renown for mediocore food. Keep it up guys, we'll definitely be back!
Living in the Inner West I often sing the sad song of there being no decent high end restaurants so I booked Bistro Ortolan for my birthday with high expectations. Location is good and parking is easy. The restaurant is decorated like a renovated terrace house and we were promptly seated and given plenty of time to peruse the menu and consider the specials.
Our waitress was quite friendly though as I've said in previous reviews I don't like wait staff interrupting conversations to talk about the menu. In any case we all ordered three courses and waited in eager anticipation of what I hoped was going to be fabulous. But alas it wasn't. I really couldn't say there was anything wrong with the food but there was no 'wow factor' and to be honest for a one hat restaurant and for the price I want the food to blow me away. It just didn't.
My three dining companions felt the same way. Nothing bad or wrong but nothing special either. I did think the mains were on the small side and my seafood entree had cold sections (though it was meant to be warm of course). Wine was good. I have to say also that at the end of the meal when we ordered coffees we didn't realise they automatically come with petit fours that you are charged for. I have never actually been to a restaurant anywhere in the world where the petit fours weren't complimentary.
I believe it was $24 for four coffees and some petit fours we didn't want which was a bit of a shock. And no we didn't complain because it was my birthday and quite frankly I was trying my very best to make the most of a disappointing evening. I am certain there are loads of people who will really love this restaurant and to tell the truth I really wanted to be one of them but I'm not. There was just something really blank about the whole experience.
We ate here on a Saturday night and the food was delicious and very very rich ( a good thing!). The wine is a little on the expensive side, but to be expected for a restaurant of this standard. Our waiter was fabulous and extremely attentive.
I just finished dinner there tonight with my girlfriend and I must say that it was gastro experience. The place is nicely located, easy to find and parking was no trouble which was very helpful.
Staffs there are very friendly and the service was very professional for a small establishment! I was pretty impressed with only couple of staffs there, best service I have had in a long time.
Food was excellent. Entrees and mains were very interesting and we love the choices they offered but we went for the degustation ($100 for 10 courses) was a bargain, the degustation menu was well constructed, every dish leading to another was just amazing and the portion size was just perfect.
Overall, I think it's a good restaurant and I highly recommend. By the way for those who underrate the restaurant due to bad experience of dining because you just had a main or entree, well maybe you should try the degustation menu for the full experience. Keep up the good work guys.
I dined here with my partner last night. The food was delicious if not slightly overpriced. My partner had a special for his main that was a wagu beef and he said it was cooked to perfection. I had a disc that consisted of jewfish, calamari and scallop. It was sensational. The only let down is the atmosphere is a little uncomfortable. There are a few tables in the front of what feels like a remodeled house and we found ourselves whispering to each other. I would, however, return for the lovely food.
We went to this restaurant late last week on the advice of a friend. This advice proved to be only so true, the food was without flaw, the service attentive without being overbearing or interrupting. A very comparable wine list, assisted by the knowledge of the wait staff, to deliver a superb night.
I must agree with the majority of this site and I do rate this restaurant highly. Definitely worth going back again for. For the record, the degustation our table enjoyed, was a great way to sample the broad flavours this little French restaurant is conjuring up. Keep it up.
Went to this restaurant last Friday night and was disappointed. The waiter we had was terrible. There is no way that restaurant is worthy of a hat! I will not be going back.
