Bistro Ortolan has relocated and is now located on Bayswater Road, Potts Point.
Bistro Ortolan serves a Prix-fix menu (choice of 2 or 3 courses) Tuesday to Thursday, and degustation only on Fridays and Saturday nights.
In addition, our new venue has a beautiful private dining room that can accommodate up to 16 people, and other areas that can be made private for smaller groups.
History:
Bistro Ortolan was launched in 2006 in the heart of Leichhardt and soon after received its first Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide hat in 2008, followed by two hats in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The menu features contemporary French food, combining traditional techniques with fresh flavours, such as the crepinette of pink snapper with seared Hervey Bay scallops, foie gras butter and baby greens. To match the meals, the wine list has been chosen with accessibility in mind, including plenty of French wines at good prices.
True to his origins, Chef Paul McGrath insists on top quality ingredients favouring those that are organic or bio-dynamic. Together Paul and Jenny present a memorable dining experience of contemporary French fare.

Went there for a quick Sunday lunch in the. The place was quite full around 1:30 pm.
Ambience: The atrium was the only area servicing lunch, like a courtyard it was not a bad area to spend a couple of hours.
Food: Had three kinds of their home-made terrines, two were really nice, but the foie gras/mushroon/veal roll was sort of tasteless and too fatty, would not recommend. I ordered it because it looked good on the board, look can be deceptive!
Beverage: Had several wines by the glass, not a bad selection.
Service: Our waitress was very friendly and the service was good.
Value: $70 for a light lunch and two wines, it was okay. Might go back to try the full menu.

Comments "Do you know how much bread rolls cost!" this was the comment I received from the "Senior" waitress. Being a french restaurant I assumed bread would be a available to clients, after initially being told by a junior waiter that there were no bread rolls left after having a number of "walk ins". I was then put down by an arrogant waitress informing myself and my partner how much bread rolls cost. Some places need to realise that they are there to serve the clients and not themselves.

One of my friends recommended this place to me, so I went there with my husband and my mother in-law a few weeks ago. We all had the degustation, with one matching wine to share between my husband and I.
The food were delicious and the presentation were exquisite! The only disappointment was the dessert (a very important course for me!). We had a sticky date creme brûlée which was too sweet. Hence, the score of 8. Otherwise, it would've been 10. The wait stuff were all so polite and attentive. Every encounters came with a smile. I have recommended this restaurant to my friends, colleagues and family.

Been to Ortolan 5 times this year. Wonderful place. Love the rooms, excellent service. Thoroughly recommended for a business lunch, it takes steak (tenderloin), chips (handcut) and salad to a new level. Everyone I have taken there agrees it is the best steak they've had. Fairly priced for the quality.
I have booked a group for dinner next week to try the fine dining.

We were originally going to visit another restaurant in the area, but with a no booking policy and a wait of over an hour just to get a seat, we decided to look elsewhere. I am so glad we did!
We walked into The Ortolan and asked if they had a table for two available. They led us out to the Brasserie area, as the dining room was full. This area is great to enjoy a casual, but impressive meal. Even with the amount of people there, the design of the space ensures you could have a normal conversation without fighting to be heard over your fellow diners.
Now to the food. A smallish menu, but enough on there to get the tastebuds excited with what's to come. I chose the Ling for entree while my friend chose the trout. We followed these up with the ocean perch and the pork loin. The waiter was friendly and patient in explaining the dishes when asked, and suggested bringing extra plates if we were going to share the meals.
The dishes were presented beautifully, and tasted just as good as they looked. The ling was melt in the mouth with a silky soft quail egg on top, and the trout was fresh with a nice zing from the horseradish cream. The perch for main was wonderfully crispy, and caused me to doubt for a moment whether I actually wanted to share. The pork loin was perfectly cooked, and the fennel remoulade lifted it to another level.
After enjoying this immensely, who wouldn't look at the dessert menu? The creme brulee wasn't to my taste (hence the 9 for food), but my friend loved it. However, the raspberry and lemon terrine! I'd come back for the dessert alone! Sweet, tart, crunch and smoothness, all presented like a work of art on the plate. I've never been a big art person, so I demolished it without a second thought.
While not the cheapest option, I thought the value was quite reasonable, considering the ambience, level of service, and the complete satisfaction with the total dinner. As we were walking out, I noticed the dining room menu. I'll definitely return to sample that as well!

Ortolan has priced itself into a region where you have high expectations. This is unfortunate because although the ideas are good, and the presentation is faultless, the execution just misses the mark.
Steak tartare was beautifully presented, small piles of flavours surrounding the perfectly diced and arranged meat, topped with a quail yolk in its shell. Gorgeous. Unfortunately, on combining the components, the mustard and black pepper overpowered the delicate flavour of the meat. Strange, orange-coloured toasts were served in accompaniment, not crunchy or dense enough to complement the meat.
My dining partner ordered gorgeously creamy lambs brains, but too densely crumbed and sadly over-flavoured.
Bouillabaisse for main, again, perfectly presented but served on a cold plate, with the soup no more than a sauce. No rouille, no baguette (or interpretation thereof) but beautifully plump mussels, a deliciously sweet scallop perched alongside a stuffed sardine and wonderfully crispy, although sadly overcooked, red mullet.
Tenderloin was perfectly cooked and served with the very best Béarnaise I've ever tasted, but again on cold plates.
Overall, this could have been a brilliant meal but each dish was let down by some glaring fault that jarred. I certainly hope this helps to bring the restaurant up to the high standards it attempts to achieve.

So happy we chose to go to dinner on a muggy and wet Sunday night. Dining @ the outdoor brasserie area of this little gem was the best Sunday night, don't want to go to work tomorrow medicine. To the sweet ladies who served us, to the cherry red if the walls and chic Parisian wallpaper, we loved ever minute! The huge Tasmanian oysters with vinegarette were so fresh and the charcuterie board is awesome, a huge selection brought out on slate and quinelled and served specifically for your table.
The main I had was simple mussels, but the fennel, tomato and flat leaf palsy, swimming with the mussels in a cream broth..... Hmmmmm, is all I can say (oh, and Yum) - now awaiting my brûlée, I seem it come out before, it was alight courtesy of cognac, I'm sure it will warm up the night. Come and check it out for yourself!

We had dined at Leichhardt and always loved it so were excited to check out the new digs, well, it's comfy, stylish and hip. Sublime oysters and champagne to start, we then tucked in to the charcuterie board (as were all the other diners) and had to restrain ourselves to only 3 selections! Delicious and the house-baked brioche was just wonderful. We then finished with entrees and sides, steak tartare (without equal in Sydney, methinks) plus mussels, cured ocean trout with chips and salad on the side was a great way to finish our classic bistro meal.
Philippe recommended some gorgeous organic French wines to accompany our dishes perfectly. The service is confident and sincere, next time we'll be back for the degustation but at this place you are spoilt for choice depending on your fancy on the day! The inner west's loss is sure the east's gain. We loved it, congratulations!

Definitely not a two hat restaurant at the Bayswter Road location, 90 minutes for entree to arrive and another hour for mains. Not good value for money, far better french restaurants around.

This is a retrospective review (before the move):
I am amazed that I have not reviewed this restaurant as yet as it is one of our most favourite places to eat. The food is delicious and full of delicate flavours and intricacies. Always beautifully presented. The staff are the most perfect host. Charming, engaging and light-hearted but never intrusive. We visit at least on an annual basis.
