Went to Billy Kwongs on a Saturday night. Got the 10 pm slot which was good because after a while people started to clear out and there was abit more space. The food was excellent, the duck unbelievable. The service was very good except the waitress told we hadn't ordered enough so we ordered more. When the food started to come out we had to cancel some of the orders as it was too much. One tip though on sat night they have a sat night surcharge on corkage. Definitely worth a visit though.
Billy Kwong, how do I even begin to rate this restaurant.
First of all, I loved Kylie Kwong's book and recipes, and I thought why not try it out her food at her restaurant. So I took my girlfriend to there and it didn't turn out to be as good as I expected.
Well, it’s a tiny place, so all the tables are squeezed together, and chairs are so small and uncomfortable, and it was unfortunate to sit close to someone who talk really loud when you want to have a romantic dinner with your girl. The service was pretty ordinary, nothing to be excited about and I would say some of staff is actually a bit snobbish, which I dislike the most.
On the other hand, the food was good, particular the duck dish, but it is definitely over-charged, I really don’t mind to pay top notch price for a food presented nicely, with amazing ambience and fantastic service. But for Billy Kwong, all I can suggest it’s to buy her book and cook at home. It was such a shame because I expected so much from Kwong, but well, maybe that’s why I was so disappointed as well.
Our table of 6 ate here for Chinese New Year and we ordered al la carte. Being of Chinese origin I had high expectations and I was quite disappointed. Most of the dishes lack flavour and were quite salty, the bio-organic lamb dish was good but for almost $50 we only got a tiny taste each. Definitely overvalued for what we got. Would not return in a hurry.
Having been to Billy Kwong previously and having one of the best meals of my life, I was unsure if it would deliver such a great experience again. I'm sorry to say, this time, it didn't.
We ordered the banquet and it was disappointing. The flavours of each dish were fantastic but as a whole, the meal fell short. There were too many entree-size dishes and not enough mains, so we actually left feeling hungry. Not good if you're paying $95 a head with wine on top.
I would recommend forgetting the banquet and ordering off the normal menu as the meal sizes are far more generous.
Last Wednesday (12th of March) my friend decided to take me out for dinner to this place, as I have never been here before. When we got there, we got the table straight away which was good. The place was rather small therefore you could hear everyone talking about their own business which wasn't a very good thing when you just want to relax.
Everything was good; we started with some little entrees. I had duck that evening. Everything was great until the vegetables came. As I was picking up a little serve into my dish, I saw the bunch of white weird stuff stuck onto one of the leaves. Me and my friend tried to look closer to see what it was, and we saw the whole cocoon of tiny worms. When we asked the waitress to explain what was it, she said: “sorry, I can not see, I have to take it to the kitchen”. We waited; she came back telling us, it was just a flower from the leaves. That was the biggest lie. The next thing she offered was to take those veggies off the bill unless we wanted to order something else. She also said she has chucked those veggies out. Now, why would you chuck it, if they were just flowers, right?
Kylie Kwong was sitting opposite to my table. I wanted to come up and speak to her about that matter, but unfortunately, my friend said not to worry about it. We paid for our meal, and left. That was the most unexpected thing happening, especially in such a rather expensive restaurant like Billy Kwong. I am definitely not coming back there EVER AGAIN!!
My partner & I have been here several times and I must say we have never been disappointed. We like to enjoy a drink at the Dolphin or the nearby Clock Hotel, while we wait for the call to say our table is ready and have never had to wait too long... usually enough time for 1-2 drinks.
Each time we go, we like to try something different (with the exception of the steamed wontons, which are served with the most delectable dressing, so we just HAVE to have those as a starter!) and each time we have left with the gorgeous flavours still lingering on our palates.
The staff have always been professional and friendly and the only downside would have to be the size of their tables for 2, which are quite small and you literally have to be careful not to bump into the people at the table next to you when you get up to leave. We also prefer to BYO, as we prefer our own selection to the wines listed on their wine list. Other than that, we love it.
After a very uncomfortable wait on stools our 'banquet' was gradually served.
Patience wains when sub-standard dishes are delivered at exhorbitant prices. Even pleasant and efficient staff cannot improve the taste of an over-rated restaurant.
Have dined here many times, and it consistently delivers....food wise. The only down side would be the constant feeling to leave ASAP. Not from us but from the waiters... I understand the need to sit as many covers as possible, to make the $$$$ but i DO like to reflect on my meal a little before leaving. Also, the close proximity of other diners is a little too personal......I'm out for a meal with a friend.... I DON'T want to hear about my neighbours unfortunate pregnancy/affair/mortgage.....
Monday night, we arrived at 6.10 pm waited in line for 5 minutes and scored the second to last seats sharing a table with two other guys. This ended up being fortunate as we were sat at the only group table in the restaurant which afforded us a nice amount of room, especially compared to the small teahouse tables that occupy the rest of the restaurant.
Though I had heard it was small inside, I was a little surprised as to how small it actually was. There is a just enough room for the waiters to squeeze between tables so it does feel quite squashy, it was also quite dark in the twilight, though this would be less of an issue during the night. The concentration of the people in a small space also made it quite noisy. The interior did, however, look and feel like a traditional chinese establishment and made us feel as if we were somewhere special. Service was efficient and friendly.
The reason we went, though, was of course the food. Quite a range of flavours were encompassed in the menu. We started with Crispy Prawn Won Ton and San Choy Bau. The Won Tons appreared wonderfully fast and were delectable. Light flavoursome batter wrapped deliciously fresh prawns with subtle flavours. A delicious freshly made sweet chilli sauce was excellent. The biggest (only) disappointment of the night was to follow, when we waited a good 15 minutes for our second entree to arrive.
When it did it was excellent, fresh crispy lettuce and deliciously flavoured meat was excellent and filling in its own right. For mains we had stir fried carrot with 3 mushrooms, a special in crispy skinned duck with sweet plum sauce accompanied by fried rice. The fried rice was the best I had tasted, light and fluffy, tasty and the inclusion of chinese sausage set it off perfectly. The duck was also the best I had ever had.
The extremely tender meat was wrapped in a lovely crispy skin and the sweet sticky sauce was delicate and not overpowering. The vegetable stirfry was simply flavoured with ginger, shao shing and soy and impossible to fault, the produce used was extremely high quality. We weren't able to finish all of the food, the servings were a good size. It is not cheap at $70 - $75 per head without drinks, but the value is in the absolute quality of the food. Very Highly recommended for a special night out.
