One Word: Over-Rated! This place is just super over-hyped, paying for the name rather than the food. We walked in Thursday 26th August and 4 of us had the Banquet.
Food: The Banquet was enough to fill you up, I would not say there was a lot of food. The spices just did not do it for me, there was not enough oomph for me to say yeah that was worth it, it was in all honestly bland and boring to say the least. Everything was nicely presented but that was about it.
Some of the items that we ate were, steamed won tons (average), crispy fried won ton (similar to take-away ones), the whole steamed fish (that was very fresh but lacking in saltiness), the wraps with lamb off the bone, the salad of pork, greens and black fungi, The duck fried additional poached oranges (flavours did not work well together at all) and lucky last we had poached pears with mascarpone.
Service: Was exceptional, honestly it was really well done, staff knew items quite well and were constantly filling our glasses with wine and water. 10 of of 10 for service.
Overall: Will not be returning, although the service was exceptional, four of us for a banquet at just over $420, I expect a little more than bland and boring food. Just did not do it for me and no idea why this place won a chefs hat!
Fantastic food, modern Australian with an Asian twist. Service was swift and professional, staff wonderful and atmosphere great. Will dine again soon. This place is fantastic. It is so nice to bring overseas guest to a favorite of yours and never be disappointed. Love it.
Tasty, lovely spices and flavours, but generally a tad greasy for me (but I'm a very light palated person). Love the eggplants and the mussels. The seating were not very comfortable for a relaxing catch up though.
I went to Billy Kwong's on Wednesday, and we were lucky to not have to queue. After much deliberation we went for the banquet menu as we could not decide what to eat. It was $95 per head, and we spoke to the waitress about what we liked/disliked so that it would be tailored to our tastes. what followed what an exquisite 9/10 course meal, the eggs were divine, the duck melted in your mouth and the poached pear was a great way to end the meal.
The service was very attentive, and we left the restaurant at 9/30, some 3 hours after we had arrived. The staff were not pushy and the serve was excellent. I think my only gripe is the stools, was a bit sore after 3 hours. A must if you want high quality food!
We have been frequenting this restaurant for years and we have always enjoyed excellent food and professional service. However, I've got to say this to you Kylie, you had a Maitre d' on the evening of Sunday 30th May who treated us with the utmost contempt and totally brushed us off, especially after we were waiting in line for your early seating time.
When were supposed to be seated, there was one vacant table remaining which he refused to give us on the basis that it was put aside for friends of yours. This blatantly contravenes your no-booking policy, as we understand, guests are only allowed to reserve the round table for 6 people.
Besides brushing us off rudely, the Maitre d' told us to make a complaint in writing to you if we had a problem with this special treatment of your friends. We are very disappointed that this is how you treat true regular customers that come there up to 4 times a month and recommend the place to a lot of people. We did not expect special treatment as we are in the same industry and we understand what it takes to look after clients. However, we do expect that you follow your own rules.
Went here for the first time last sunday and I really enjoyed it. This place is all about the food and that's the kind of place I like. We walked in and were instantly seated at the communal table. The chairs are really awkward and uncomfortable but we had a lot of table space so that was nice. The music is played at the perfect level, you can hear it and you can hear your company too.
The service was good and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed my meal and my partner did too although the mains are not quite big enough. We had the dessert, poached pears, which was nice although lacking in flavour. I love the organic dark chocolate that comes at the end of the meal.
When the bill came we were charged $32 for a pot of 3.20 tea. Hard to spot as the bill is hand written and illegible with simply a reciept stapled on top with numbers. We got our change and thought we were short changed $10. Instead of being on top with the rest of the change, it was pinned underneath the bill.
I have to say I was very disappointed in my experience at Billy Kwongs. We had wanted to dine there for some time and we finally got the chance to do so and were prepared to wait for the standard 1-2 hour wait. Unfortunately, the wait was not worth it, whilst the entrees were ok, the mains for almost $50 were very disappointing. The braised pork belly, included small cut up cube pieces with boiled potato that had no flavour and was not cooked properly and some kind of noodle in the shape of a wagon wheel which again was an odd accompaniment.
The flavour was also fairly average. We then had the crisky skin duck which was overcooked and too salty with no vegetables or anything to accompany it, again very disappointing! On top of this we encountered rushed service, expensive corkage and a surcharge, so would never go back and would not recommend it to any of our friends who dine regularly in surry hills.
There are much better options and choices, which are much less expensive and provide far more tastier dishes. Sorry Kylie, you certainly did not live up to the hype. Overall 3/10!
I was excited about dining here as I had heard good things. It did not disappoint. Waiting for a table did not worry me at this restaurant. The service and food was second to none from the moment we stepped inside and the presence of Kylie Kwong herself made the room full of warmth and class. A lovely experience all round.
