If you're looking for great food in an unprentious restaurant, look no further. We dined early on a Friday night, had good service and found all dishes to be excellent, some great-tasting flavours particularly the fish curry and ginger fried rice. Generous portions and not ridiculously priced so good value for such fine food.
Waitress was efficient if not friendly, and thankfully did not constantly ask if everything was Ok as is annoyingly the case in many restaurants, in fact she never asked at all! Perhaps, she heard us raving about the food and noticed the empty plates and, therefore, didn't need to ask, but I think it was more the case that she didn't have a friendly personality. This was not the case for the head waiter, his personality was indeed friendly and humorous.
We didn't know it was BYO so ordered beers and bottle of Cloudy Bay SB ($60)from limited menu. Food menu is also limited but it matters little because all dishes tasted great!

We loved the ricotta pancakes. Our corn fritters were a bit over cooked compared to previous experience at Woollahra. Still, a lovely meal and great coffee in a nice atmosphere.

Our party of 7 enjoyed their meal. Prawn toasts and zucchini fries were yummy and my salmon with soba noodles and watercress was fabulous. Our two waiters were first class, very professional, helpful, attentive and friendly. Will definitely return.

Great food at this always packed Surry Hills establishment, special mention must be given to the bloody marys!
However, when my friends and I went to pay, we were told 'I can see you're going to try and pay separately but it's one bill per table' by the rather arrogant cashier. This would be fair enough if it was stated anywhere, the menu, a sign on the wall but instead left a bad taste in our mouths after a great meal. Thanks but no thanks, Bills.

Had dinner with friends here last night. Nice relaxed atmosphere and delicious simple well prepared food. Perfect way to wind down after work with friends.
Dessert was incredible! The ginger biscuit icecream sandwich with butterscotch and the brown sugar pavlova with yoghurt were the highlights. I'll definitely be back soon!

Great fritter! But what horrible rude staff. Took me more than 10 minutes to get attention from a staff, only to be told to wait because they have a full house and they need to take turn to serve every customer! I am sorry bills, with at least another 10+ spare seats and no customer waiting to be seated, I do not call that full house! Btw, learn to smile to your customer as well. Being soft spoken but rude doesn't equal great customer service.

I had brunch at Bills last week. I came on a weekday so was seated immediately which was good. I liked the decor and feel of the cafe- quite simple and relaxed and fresh. I ordered the ricotta banana hotcakes which I found quite delicious at first, however I only finished half of it as it was a bit too heavy or filling for me. My sister had the full aussie brekkie which looked great and I tried the scrambled eggs which were lovely and fluffy. Overall, I had a good experience however I did feel the prices were hefty for just a brekkie meal, however I don't mind coming back in future.

While the food is good and simple, the service and treatment of staff in this place is appalling. Do not save a seat for me any time soon.

Seriously disappointed, I had the prawn and chilli linguini which was bland and my friend for the wagu beef burger which looked promising until she cut into it and the meat was completely raw inside. The waiters did get her a new one but still charged for it. When is came to dessert we had to ask to see the menu again instead of being offered which i know is nit picking but a little customer service goes a long way. We got the chocolate browny which was dry and more like a cake and the brown sugar meringue was a bit too hard and i think slightly over cooked but the rhubarb and yogurt that came with it were delicious and gave it that much needed moisture. There were seven of us dinning and when it came to pay the bill our bill came to $255 and we put in $280 which were were happy to leave as a tip but to assume it is a tip without putting the change back on the table for us to leave it is wrong and rubbed us up the right way. Probably won't go back there in a hurry.

Sometimes you feel like plain toast and jam for breakfast so when the very friendly waitress (kindly brought water for my dog) said the preserves were homemade I happily ordered that with a large coffee whilst sitting outside.
When the food arrived I almost burst out laughing at the minuscule portion of toast. (see photo)
Come on guys! Sourdough bread is cheap and available even in very inexpensive cafes. At $5.50 a serve I thought this was offensively outrageous. I was wishing I'd gone to the Burke St Bakery instead. The coffee was ok but the outside space had all the ambience of a shopping centre outside with the bonus of homeless people begging for cigarettes and money thrown in.
Indoors looked pleasant enough in a sort of homely upmarket, american, apple store/starbucks kind of way. When paying the bill I really dislike having to recite what I had eaten. After all is that not their job?
Receiving change on a plate is also unnecessary and slightly pretentious.
Do they think that will encourage you to leave it for them? Whats wrong with just handing it to you at the till where you've just paid. Overall I think Bills is pretentious, grossly over priced and greatly overrated and in a nasty location. I shan't be going back knowing what other great cafes are in Surry Hills.
