The worst meal I have ever eaten out anywhere. The schnitzel was like it had been microwaved and was so bad I actually took photos to show people. The "salad" was lettuce with water. Service terrible. Cordial? Are you kidding me?
Zero ambience. Is that meant to be part of the charm? If so, they have failed. I am well aware of the concept that you get what you pay for but even so, this was terrible. Embarrassingly bad.
We went here last night because Bar Reggio had an hour wait. For the record I am a huge fan of cheap eats and good basic pasta because sometimes that's just what you feel like. Bill and Toni should be ashamed of themselves.
We were seated and found that 70% of the menu had run out at 8:30pm, we were handed a 'salad' that was (and I kid you not) a small bowl of iceburg lettuce chunks splashed with white vinegar - not a tomato or olive or anything else in sight. I orderd the spaghetti marinara and veal casserole and my friend ordered the schnitzel and spaghetti bol combo. Our meals arrive instantly and were huge plates with sloppy over cooked pasta (that had obviously been sitting in water all night), and overcooked meat bathing in a puddle of grease.
I know this place is called an 'institution' but no one should ever accept food of this quality just because of the history of the place. Disgusting.
Ate there last night with work colleagues from Sydney who reccommended. Food was deplorable even from a cheap eat and "Sydney institution". The scallopine was not a proper cut of veal and was swimming in its juices. All meals arrived at the table within about 8 minutes of ordering and had just been microwaved or blasted with a grill to reheat.
Accompanying carrot and spinach were totally nuked. Any service station or truckstop in Victoria let alone any Italian cheap eats restaurants would blow this away. Plenty of great little restaurants in this strip that may cost a little more but you get what you pay for.
This is possibly the worst italian food I have ever had. From reading the other comments I am astonished at people's version of what hearty italian food is. We ordered the veal and it seriously was floating in a pool of sauce, and was ridiculously tough. I am not a snob and am certainly familiar with simple traditional Italian food - but this was far from it. Definitely won't ever be dining here again!
Basic, fast, filling Italian food. I enjoy lunch on the balcony. If I don't BYO I bring up a mineral water from downstairs to drink with the meatball pasta and then pop downstairs and bring up a good coffee and gelato for my dessert - exercise works off the calories!! Sitting on the balcony with good pasta and good coffee with gelato at rock bottom prices? Favourite place.
We frequently dine at expensive restaurants but this is our favourite no frills eatery in Sydney, excellent consistency in food and service. No place like it when you just want quick simple and hearty italian food (adore your spag bol and veal snitzel with cheese and italian salad). Don't change a thing B&T.
Visited Sydney this summer and went to this place and loved it! Real Italian people, a family running the restaurant and cheap but proper food! I ordered, went to the toilet and it was there when I got back! While eating it felt like Vito Corleone could enter any moment! And the cute waitress thought I was from Italy after speaking a few Italian words! Wish them all the best!
I love this place and go at least once a month. The food is great for the price and always consistent, unlike the more "trendy", yuppie Italian places in Sydney. The staff are quirky but very friendly and always make a point of stopping to chat even when they are extremely busy. There are not many places in Sydney that give out free cordial, bread and salad and never bat an eyelid when asked for free refills! This place has been around for over thirty years and proves that simple works best! not the place for a first date but great for a third or fourth date!
Nothing in the city compares to good ol' B&T's, not even no-names anymore. You wouldn't go to KFC and expect steak diane, the same way you wouldn't go to bill and toni's and expect a potato rosti, red wine jus and all the usual a la carte gourmet stuff. This place is where you go for a nice, hearty meal. Cheap and more than worth squashing in on a busy saturday night for. Its not the most ambient and serene place, but that has never been their claim or objective for that matter. Staff are great and quirky. Always a fun place.
As everyone has said, you get what you pay for. The free cordial and bread are great but the food is very average. The bolognaise I make at home tastes better. Our main problem was that we had never been there before and didn't know it was CASH ONLY. No signs anywhere about it and when we courteously asked if we just hadn't seen it the lady was very impolite...saying huffily that it's been that way for years! We had a two hundred dollar bill and all the ATMs in the area were down and we were seriously tempted to just leave but honesty won out. Won't be going back to the upstairs restaurant, it wasn't worth it EVEN at such a low price.
