Overview of Big Rig Diner

Now open for business five nights a week, last night was the launch of Sydney’s newest – Big Rig Diner, the newest space at Ruby Rabbit.

Head chef Zachary Sykes created a fantastic sampler menu for last night’s launch which included mini Big Rig hotdogs with spicy sausage, caramelised onion, brie and tomato chilli jam, mini Big Rig beef burgers with beetroot relish, horseradish mayonnaise and watercress, Jack Daniels chilli tortillas with guacamole, caramelised pumpkin and sage bubble and squeak on toast and sirloin steak with mashed potato and gravy.

To wash it all down guests enjoyed punchy margaritas from El Jimador, Jack Daniels cocktails and Miller beer. Guests included Damian Walshe Howling, Damian De Montemas, Pip Edwards, Gracie Otto, Renee Brack, Chris Taylor, Renee Bargh, Lola Van Horst and Corbin Harris.

Owners Paul Schell and Phil Cawood even welcomed guests with a huge Big Rig truck pulled up out front of the roadside inspired eatery.

*****

Since opening their doors for trading two months ago, Sydney’s hottest roadside inspired eatery Big Rig Diner at Ruby Rabbit is excited to announce that they are opening for lunch time trading from this Friday 4th September.

I agree with the other comments, they really need to consider some new staff. Whether the current mob are just too busy, or more likely, just don't care, they are anything far from attentive. I love the idea of the place and most of the execution is great. Just a few key things missing, think I can get a burger somewhere else.

Cool music and the venue has potential but the service is terrible. We waited 30 minutes for a table on a Thursday night before waiting another 20 minutes to order. It took well over an hour for a few hot dogs and fries. When we enquired about our order (which they obviously forgot) the waiter was arrogant and rude.
Do yourself a favour and give this one a miss.

I think this place has potential but they desperately need more staff! Four of us waited 40 minute for a table which is fine, it's a tiny place and it was a Thursday night. Once we sat down we waited another 20 minutes to order (there are about 6 tables), ordered water that never came, sangria that thank god arrived within 20 minutes and was tasty (however, pricey at $30 for a medium jug) because it was the only thing that kept us going as we waited 90 minutes for the first plate of food.

Our dinner arrived one meal at a time with about 15-20 minutes intervals. We watched in agony as the chef did one burger or hotdog at a time in slow motion and then went out back for 30 minutes, strolling back in to slowly work on our remaining meals. A quick 7.30 pm burger/hotdog turned into an ordeal, we missed our friend's drag performance which at 10 pm didn't seem unreasonable at the time and by the time we left at 11 pm we were exhausted, unsatisfied and frustrated.

The fun atmosphere is the only thing going for it at this point, hopefully they sort themselves out and until they do and I hear so on the grapevine, definitely won't be back or recommending.

I went here at about 12 am on Saturday night and sat down at a booth straight away, no waiting. Although it isn't a place that you would go to for dinner with friends, it was great for a late post party dinner, certainly better than getting take out from somewhere in the cross or on Oxford.

We had a beef burger and fries and all were tasty, greasy, salty and went down very easily after a night of drinks. I would go here before oportos anyday! The food isn't amazing, nor is the ambience or service, but I don't think this place is trying to target the type of people who would really care. I will be back.

Seriously too hot due to heat reflected from the pressed steel walls, too cramped unless you manage to grab a booth which is basically impossible due to eternal waiting list, food is totally unauthentic, for chilli fries read oven chips under a glob of food court chilli con carne.

Service unpredictable, seconds round of drinks never came. Ambience a tad contrived with old soul, rock and roll and blues tracks from the CD sounds system while the completely empty vinyl jukebox just takes up room. Worst of all, filled to the brim with sad eastern suburbs wannabees. Very poor experience over all. My advice don't bother.

Walking past I loved the look of this place and decided to give it go, once inside the service was far from good (young, confused, disinterested staff) and the music way too loud.

On to the food, we had a burger and the chicken fajitas. The burger was just that, a very plain burger, lonely on the plate. The pattie was nice if not a little fatty and the bread fluffy and very burger like in nature, the bacon did not have all the rind cut off and the cheese was cheap and nasty. The chicken fajitas were even worse, the seasoning was all pepper and not much else, the capsicum was overcooked and the condiments were pretty bad (the avocado was browning when it turned up to our table).

We ordered a side of chips which were terrible, some weren't cooked properly and were still slightly frozen, honestly for $4 make the effort to peel some fresh potatoes. The waitress has got to go. Also, what's with paying $8 for a beer out the back bar and $7.50 for the same beer when seated?

I really wanted to like this place and will give it another shot. The place is pretty cosy, but we waited 45 minutes for our food. The ditzy, rude and un-interested waitress needs to go. It had the feel of a new eatery trying to find its feet with an understaffed kitchen and only one waitress.

My friend ordered the burger, expensive and quite plain on the plate. Could have some more to it to justify the price and make it look appealing. I had Fajitas. Chicken was undercooked, slightly pink and the plate did not come sizzling, but 'warm' after the waitress had an argument with another staff member. Salsa/Avo/etc could have been slightly more generous based on the small amount of chicken.

Once they work out their staffing issues and balance the condiments with the food, this place has potential. Oh but try and go on a night when they open the windows. We left smelling like a greasy grill.
