Beppi's is a lovely restaurant - great decor, old-school friendly service from the old Italian waiters, and nice, flavorsome (yet restrained) food. The only shame about Beppi's is the prices. For what you pay here, you'd expect much more flair, slightly bigger plates etc. For example $19 for one marinated and baked mushroom seems a bit silly. If this Sydney icon wonders why it was at most half-full on a Friday evening, they don't have to look any further for the answer.
What impressed me the most about this restaurant was the 'live' specials board. The moment our group sat down, there were 2 waiters that came up to us with platters in tow to show us the specials for the night. From figs to banana prawns to ravioli to scampi.
The baked figs wrapped in prosciutto accompanied with gorgonzola sauce was divine .. perfect balance of the sweetness and softness of the fig with the saltiness and crunch of the proscuitto. The mains ordered were just as nice however unfortunately, Beppi's disappointed us with the dessert. The white chocolate brulee was far from a brulee, in fact, it was more a solid custard and came out as a slice of pie rather than in ramekins (now whether this is their modern twist on brulees who knows however there was nothing modern about this place so doubt it would be that). I had the flamed crepe with liquer and strawberries which in my opinion was average – not so memorable.
The service we could not fault – the waiters were attentive without smothering us, it's as if they knew exactly when we needed them without us having to get their attention. There is valet parking available but take note, the cost is $35 if paid inside Beppi's or $30 if paid directly to the person responsible for the valet parking.
Beppi’s will remain a great memory – as to whether I will return? Perhaps for a very special occasion.
I took my family to this restaurant on their last night in Sydney, and we were 8 of us. I ordered two different types of white wine, and the waiter wasn’t happy about the fact 2 different kinds of white wine were ordered.
While we were still reading menu he also keeps bothering us to order Bruschetta. We ordered it, but he brought us far too much of it, and of course we couldn’t finish even half of them. I also ordered half dozen of oysters, and he brought 1 dozen.
When I ordered 3 entrées and 4 pastas to share with everybody he said the amount we ordered is not even for 4 peoples and pushed us to order the main course from each of us. I insisted that we should wait and see until we finish all meal we ordered as we can not eat lots. When we all finished meal, all of us were so full!!!!!
This restaurant was most unpleasant one I have ever been, and I will never ever go back even if the food was nice.
My gal and I came here on a Friday night recently to enjoy a nice dining experience. Beppi's has a reputation dating back to the 50s and the restaurant certainly had that look about it.
The waiter brought out a huge platters of raw seafood to tempt us and when I saw it coming, I was prepared for the smell, surprisingly there wasn't. I was less impressed when they pushed the Bruschetta on us..
As far as the food goes, the figs wrapped in prosciutto and gorgonzola cheese was superb, the fillet mignon was quite tender and garfish also reasonable.
If you are paying this price for your food then you expect friendly waiters and great service throughout the experience, not for it to deteriorate after you settle the bill.. that's what happened to us and turned a nice evening into one where the waiter denigrated himself, seriously those waiters need to think about earning their tips rather than expecting one..
At $120 for 2 and all we had were 2 entees and 2 mains that were pasta, this was an extreme disappointment. The waiters were rude and not interested in us once we decided we weren't going to drink. My angel hair pasta with saffron was extremely salty and not enjoyable at all.
Authentic Italian Old style, charming, superbly fresh ingredients, fantastic chef, great variety. Comprehensive wine list. Tip: order from the daily specials.
Beppi's was chosen for a special family occasion with table for 8 booked for a Tuesday night. Room felt crowded even though it was half full with only one side of the restaurant being utilised as well as the cellar section.
Service was rushed and over the top with 3 pushy male waiters rushing and hovering quickly all over our table all night. Although we declined waiter's offer to order bruschetta it was brought out regardless and our wine glasses removed before some of us could finish our prosecco.
The fig with proscuitto and gorgonzolla sauce was divine, wait bait fritters good, zucchini flowers fine and pasta entrees alright. However, the mains were less than pleasing as the veal was undercooked and lacked flavour, the wagyu beef tasteless and marbled with fat. The seafood mains were fine but not extraordinary in any way. We ordered all the sides otherwise not a vegetable in sight!
Overall a let down considering this restaurant is supposed to be a Sydney icon. Memorable but for the wrong reasons.
My partner and I went there the other night for my birthday and overall it was lovely, although too expensive for what it was. The food itself was lovely, although the portions were too small for the price. I had the Avocado and Seafood and for $30, I expected more seafood than the 1 prawn, 1 scallop, 1 lobster tail and 1 piece of smoked salmon I got! My partner had a pasta special which was lovely though again, it was $30 for pasta!
Mains were really nice - I had Rack of Veal ($46) and he had the Wagyu rump ($60) but like schmoopy, I thought for the price it should have come with vegies instead of the $8.50 they charged for a side of potatoes and beans is just a rip off!
Service was wonderful and very attentive, even asking us if we'd like a break in between courses and then telling us after 10 mins that he'd just put our order to the kitchen - nice touch. However, what really irked me is that instead of the $52 bottle of wine I ordered, he brought me the $69 one. I even questioned it twice before he opened it to make sure and he insisted this was the right one - it wasn't.
What was up until then a lovely birthday dinner, was impacted by this dirty trick a lot of high end places use inspite of already being overpriced. For this point alone, I won't be back.
Really enjoyed the food here, and the service couldn't be faulted. Particularly liked the Figs with prosciutto and quattro fromage sauce. Could do with a bit of a makeover though, and it is very expensive.
I just rang to enquire if they had availability. When I said I'd call back and confirm, she said she'd already written the booking in the book and got all shirty. I haven't booked (for a group of 10) purely on the service I received on the phone! If they want to get people into the restaurant they should have a better phone manner!
