Hmm, yeah, this place was alright. The food was really pretty good but I thought the service let it down. The shredded chicken for entrees is excellent, and the sizzling beef and stirfry duck for mains are great too, but the waiters were uninspired and the ambience was a little insipid. Don't bother with the desserts, I don't think I'll be back which is unfortunate as I'm always looking for new and exciting Thai places.
Average! is all I can really say about this place from the decor to the food to the service. Not that it was bad but not that it was good either. Food was prompt, but the textures and flavours were way out of balance. The venison curry was the low point, thin, and flavourless. The betel leaf was fine as was the shredded coconut chicken, but had no wow factor. So overall average and wouldn't go back.
The food here is excellent. I dined here with six family members and we ordered six different dishes which we all tried and they were all very tasty, except the green veg which was pretty bland. Not a big fan of the decor myself, it's a little cold and not very cosy, the open kitchen gives a nice atmosphere. The service is OK but a little unfriendly I felt, and the food's a little pricey.
Excellent food. You can taste the many layers of sweet, sour and hot. This is top quality thai food. The service has always been consistently good. I like my food HOT so would prefer a little more fiery but thats ME. I recommend this place if you haven't been. It will be sad to see this place leave Surry Hills.
Had dinner here recently for the first time and was very impressed. All the food was excellent while the service was first rate. The duck curry, salmon and soft shell crab were the standouts. Will definitely be going back.
The food served at Benzin was extremely tasty and the servings large! If it were not for the waiter advising us to reduce our order, we would have have enough food to serve an army. The service could do with a little more smiling and a touch of finesse.
We came here for dinner for a special occasion based on reviews. The experience left us disappointed. The service was all over the place, and it was the combination of the following that made us come to that conclusion:
(1) Wine orderded. The waiter returned, informing us it was not available (why didn't they already know and tell us when we ordered?). The waiter did not bring a wine menu with her, rather, a bottle of her choice as a replacement bottle. We declined the recommendation and asked for the wine list back.
(2) We ordered two entrees, one arrived, was eaten and the plates removed. About 10 minutes later the waitress came back and asked if we had received both of our entrees. After another delay, fresh entree plates were set and second entrees arrived.
(3) We had the beef salad as one of the mains and I am no coward when it comes to chilli, but it was too hot and overpowered the subtle flavours.
(4) As the mains were cleared, the waiter asked if we wanted coffee. I asked for a break. "Dessert?" she queried. I asked if she was asking because the kitchen was about to close. Yes she said. There are better ways for waiters to handle this.
The food has the fantasic flavours of David Thompson's "Sailor's Thai" - I would recommend dining there for the authentic Thai meal.
They have great food, quite different to the usual Thai - great soft shell crab and papaya salad. Interesting atmosphere sitting in a car show room, but all in all a great choice for a Wednesday night! I would return.
