Great quality for sashimi especially with the bento boxes. The katsu and teriyaki dishes were well presented and delicious. We figured that though it was not really Japanese-operate. Anyway, it was definitely value for money and few can tell. With so many Japanese restaurants opening up in Stanley Street, BenBu is still the best one in the block!
The crispy spicy salmon roll, filled with salmon and tempura 'crumbles' and rolled in flying fish roe, was great. Soft shell crab roll drizzled with wasabi mayo was tasty, but could do without the sweet potato chunks included in the roll, in my opinion.
The sushi main meal had pretty passable sushi, a little on the small side though. The bento boxes are really good value and the prices overall are good.
The space is a little bit cramped but the service was quick and attentive so all up a good choice amongst the FOUR(!) sushi joints now on Stanley St.
This is a great little Japanese restaurant if you’re after a quick, cheap and informal meal. The sushi is fresh and tasty. I found nothing wrong with the service. They were quick and polite. There were two of us and the bill came to just under $40.
I absolutely love this place, I go as much as I can. Great value, the service is really friendly and I'm always surprised by how fast the food comes. Bento boxes are awesome and fill you up completely. Also love the gyoza's and rolling prawn for entree.
This place is all about the food. I go every week and while they could do with putting on some decent music and giving the place some atmosphere, it's really just about the food and the byo. Love it!
I had the Bento box, teriyaki chicken and tempura with Miso, fantastic and also great value at $16.50. Slightly funky (but basic) feel. Friendly fast service. Highly recommended.
After reading a few of the other reviews I can see that Benbu has really upped the service. The service was quick and food was really fresh. I enjoyed the experience and will definitely go back. Best Sushi I've had in a long time.
Finally a casual sushi place that does not do the usual cooked tuna in boiled rice like every other place in Sydney!!
I had the rolls, which were exceptionally presented, great colour and theatre to the plate!
- Soft Shell Crab drizzled in wasabi infused mayonaise AMAZING!
- Spicy Tuna
- Tempura Prawn and avocado with wasabi infused mayo
I would best describe the sushi as a casual version of sushi-e.
Service is a little slow, but for good sushi at such a reasonable price, I am willing to overlook. My recommendation is do lunch there, I will be back for sure!
We love this place and hestitate to tell others about it because it's a secret we want to keep. The quality of the sashimi is outstanding, especially given the reasonable prices. The rolls sometimes come bathed in a little too much sauce/mayo. The noodle-wrapped fried prawn entree is delicious, in a greasy, lip-smacking way. Along with BYO, it is possible to have a really satisfying meal for not a lot of money.
