I had a very good weekend and ate out at 2 of Sydney's great restaurants and enjoyed both but must say that Becasse takes the icing. WOW! what a great meal, great service, and a very very pleasant ambience. Thank you
The food was superb, well presented & tasty but I don't think kitchen staff could cope with delivery when it's full house. My husband & I was the 1st couple arrived around 6pm and we had a great time enjoying all degustation menu, but had to wait almost 45 minutes for dessert as kitchen staff were busy preparing the other customers' food & have forgotten our dessert. Bummer!!!
My partner and I went to Becasse on Saturday night to celebrate a special occasion, and were not disappointed. We opted to have the degustation menu and were delighted with the food. The presentation was excellent and the flavours wonderful. The restaurant was fairly busy, however, the staff were attentive and friendly (not stuffy like we have experienced at other restaurants of this caliber).
We decided not to have the matching wines with our meal and instead asked the waitress to recommend a wine which was lovely. The pace of the meal was slow, however, this suited us perfectly as we could enjoy each course and savor the experience of the meal. All in all a lovely night out and a memorable experience.
Went last friday night with my boyfriend and had a good experience there. We were seating just in front of the kitchen then there was lot of noise and high light. We asked the staff to move and they accepted with smile and apologies, good point.
We took the degustation menu and the food was absolutely divine. The creme brulée dessert was sooooo good. I'm french and I went in lot of famous restaurant in the world so, I'm not a specialist but I know what I'm talking about. We asked for a red australian wine and explained the tastes we wanted and the sommelier brought the perfect one. Good point.
Now, bad points : for a restaurant of this category, the service is not good at all. First of all, they immediately asked us what we wanted to drink as we just seated and they didn't give us the wine menu so how to choose??!!
Between the dishes, sometimes it was very long, sometimes very short. It looked like they weren't organised at all and tried to bring the food when they could. 2 times, I was seeing the waitress looked at our table with lot of intensity, I just put the cutlery in my plate after eating and the waitress was just there to jump on!
I guess our dishes were ready in the kitchen.
As we are french, we had a french waiter who tried to explain the menu (in french) but it seemed he had forgotten all the french words. He interrupted us all the time in our conversation without any apologies, forgot the name of the dishes and came back 10 times to explain things while we didn't really care. In the middle of the diner, he disappeared and was replaced by an australian one who didn't explained what he was bringing even in english...
We arrived at 8.30 pm with a reservation. So they knew that we were there until 10/10.30. All the same, at 10 pm, they switched off the lights of the kitchen as it was the moment to go...
And the worst service mistake I've ever seen was at the end when a woman put the bill on the table without being asked for. I think it's the worst mistake it could happen in a restaurant. We felt very clearly that it was the moment for us to leave the restaurant.
I know that in Australia, 8.30 pm is very late for the diner but when we booked, they accepted our reservation. Personally, I think they have to serve us until the end without making us feel it's late and we have to leave. The waiter was ironing and preparing the tables for the next day, it was very impolite.
It looked like they were very disorganized and the french waiter a little bit too friendly with us. The decoration and the ambience were quite nice. It's a good restaurant and the food in very good but don't go there if you expect something about the service because you'll be very disappointed.
I could give a very good critic for this restaurant but everything is really spoiled by the bad service.
My first visit to Becasse. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The ambience is also good for romantic dining for me and my partner. We skipped the entree, as we weren't too hungry, and had the mains + dessert, all were very nice. We were served a few samplers (different types of bread, dessert, etc), which complemented well with the whole dining experience.
The final bill came to just under $200 (we also had a couple of glasses of bubbly).
Overall, good service, ambience and food.
My boyfriend took me to Becasse for my birthday. We decided to go for the Tasting Menu and it was divine. I have eaten in some of the world's best restaurants and Becasse is up there with them. It was a quiet evening when we dined but it did not matter much as we were completely enthralled with the food and wine. The sommelier has made some quirky yet amazing wine choices to match the fantastic food.
Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly and all the staff were welcoming. My favourite course, however, had to be the dessert and I am by no means a sweet tooth. A perfectly deconstructed banana creme brulee, amazing. All in all a fantastic experience. Thanks for a great night.
Food & service did not disappoint in fact great. The entrees, mains & desserts were of the right amounts in order for us to go for all three courses & not feel that we ate too much. We particularly like the fact that before every course, they serve us little complimentary dishes which were delicious as well.
We been to Becasse at their previous Elizabeth street location & I thought this new place has lost some of the "French" charm/ambience perhaps.
I will never go back to Becasse. I am not one to post my comments on here but this is how strongly I feel against the place. We went last night and had the degustation with matching wines. The food and wines were great. However, the service was appalling. I have been to many restaurants and this is the first time I have ever come across such disorganisation and terrible management.
Firstly, it took more than 10 minutes for our drinks to be ordered once seated. Then they forgot to serve us our wine with the first course. When questioned, some pathetic excuse was given about us "eating too quickly" when they simply had forgotten! During the main meal where we could select out of 2 choices, they got half of our orders confused. The worse was yet to come. During dessert, not only did they get our orders wrong but they had forgotten our wines ONCE MORE and wrong matching wines were given!!! When asked, the waitress simply asked if I preferred the alternative wine! Go figure!
I believe if you're to pay for such highly priced foods ($200+), good service should naturally come with it. I am happy to overlook simple/occasional mistakes. But when mistakes are made over and over again, it gets tiring. The staff were indifferent and non-apologetic. Service was VERY slow. There were blocks where we waited a long time in between meals. If you're a lover of wine and would like to know what wines you're drinking, forget about it! There were no sommeliers to provide the information - the waiters just read off the menu. The ambience was ok but positioned near the door, it was very draughty and cold!
Maybe our table was unlucky last night but I hope this would be insightful for others. I would honestly go back to Marque, Quay, Est. or Tetsuya’s any day for this price! Food may have been good but it's the poor service that will form a lasting impression on me.
I took my partner here for her birthday, and what a great night it was. We went for the 10 course degustation, and the whole night lasted 4 hours. The food was stunning. The Wagyu steak was the best piece of meat I have ever eaten, and each meal kept getting better and better. Each dish is quite small, but after 10-12 dishes, we were quite full, so you will be stuffed upon leaving.
It was the service that set this place apart. As we entered, each person greeted us warmly. The waiter we had took our coats, and looked after us all night. The shellfish dishes were substituted on request, and service all night was warm, friendly and attentive. They even wrote 'happy birthday' in chocolate on a dessert plate after the waiter asked about the occasion. Each person modified their behaviour to suit the crowd, as they took a much more formal approach to some heavy hitters sitting near by.
Wonderful place to visit for a special occasion. The waiter even split the matching wines order between two glasses for each meal. It's quite pricey, but the food and service was stunning.
