The best chinese roast pork/char siew I've ever tasted. The pork is lean and the marinade the perfect balance of saltiness and sweetness. It never disappoints me when I need a fix of my favourite chinese dishes that I can never cook on my own.
Come on people- really, like the few other rational eaters who have commented, you need to realise that BBQ King has never been billed for its high class interior, or its wonderful, happy service - it has been known for its food, and that's it. You go there to eat, not to watch the walls or the waitstaff!
Now that I've got that out, if you are looking for a (quick) quality feed before (or after) a concert or show - this is the place to line your gut! It might have gotten more expensive over the years but it's all relative to the current market prices - isn't everything going up?
Regardless, BBQ King still has the best Peking Duck I've ever had (and I've had a lot) - if you're going for a quick lunch, try the Long Short Soup, and always have a Tsingtao! If Neil Perry eats there, is that not enough encouragement for you?
Oh how the mighty have fallen. BBQ King has for decades been a Sydney institution - famous for its duck, and to a lesser extent pork, and frequented by big name chefs after their own venues have closed.
Nowadays, the late night closing time (I think 2am) remains, as does the excellent duck, but a lot has changed. First, the venue which was once 'shabby chic' is now just tired. Second, the service which was once typical Chinese restaurant 'indifferent' is now rude. Third, the prices have steadily risen without any rise in quality or quantity.
So, go here if you want the 'iconic' duck experience, but there are probably a dozen better places now in Chinatown.
Went there a few times over Christmas. The food was fantastic. The BBQ meats were perfectly succulent, vegetables tender and service decent. Crockery clean too. But the bill was unexpectedly higher than what one would expect for such a place. Way too many staff members on the lower floor. They stood around doing nothing.
Lovely place with an authentic chinese ambience. Service is fantastic for an asian restaurant, with waiters/waiteresses always in view to flag down for any particular requests. Can't find that in any other asian restaurant, period. Only quipe is the price, $15-20 pp for a chinese meal is expensive. But I suppose with so many waiters around it drove prices up. A suggestion is to cut the number of staff by about 20-30% to lower prices!
