Overview
My partner and I stumbled across Bay Hong after searching hopelessly up and down the clamorous Oxford St. This Vietnamese restaurant is just what the area needs – a comfortable, affordable and stylish restaurant with authentic cuisine minus all the bells and whistles.
The welcoming and attentive staff greeted us in traditional cheosagms and were more than happy to answer all our possibly tiring questions about their menu and Vietnamese style of cooking. We feasted on salt and pepper calamari whilst engrossing ourselves in the beautifully handwritten menus. I found it so hard to settle on one particular dish, everything sounded fabulous. The soft-shell crab special was simply to-die-for. The Duck Basket was similarly impressive, making a grandiose arrival on our table in a golden basket of crispy noodles. The Crispy Pork Pancakes from the ‘At the table’ section of the menu added a bit of fun to our evening. You can’t leave without tasting the heavenly Combo Dessert – A Tran family legacy according to the lovely hostess Hong.
All round, the ample portions and mouth-watering array of flavours at Bay Hong really hits the spot.
The food is superb and the service was great from this family owned. It has a great atmosphere and is well priced for the quality of food. Definitely recommended.
My partner and I were regulars from RQ which was the old Restaurant that was located here, since they have changed owner I have never been back to this place.
Last saturday night I decided to give it a shot with some of my friends and my partner which I was shocked by how amazing the food was and it goes well with the great and relaxed ambience after a hard and stressed working day.
I'll definitely now be a new regular of Bay Hong, however, I suggest you should try it for yourself!!
I have had many chances to travel to and work in Vietnam for sometime. During my stay, one of the things I used to do was to wander around in the evening, eating out at various different places, from the food stalls on the sidewalk of the streets to the upmarket restaurants in Saigon or Hanoi.
Last Sunday night whilst visiting Sydney this time, my friends and I happened to walk into a small Vietnamese restaurant on Crown Street called the Bay Hong.
The menu looks quite voluminous, with dishes I have tried previously in Vietnam and other dishes of which I have never heard. When asked, the waitress explained that the cooks at Bay Hong are descendants of Bay Tinh. Bay Tinh was the private chef cook of Khiem Thien Tran, who was a prime minister of the South Vietnam government during the Vietnam War.
The dishes which I haven’t heard of, were some of the dishes that Bay Tinh used to cook for Mr. Tran to entertain his friends from the government or the diplomatic community.
Out of curiosity I ordered some entrees and three main courses. They were surprisingly delicious. My friends, who are Sydneysiders, said they haven’t found similar dishes in other Vietnamese restaurants in Sydney.
Further chatting revealed that Bay Tinh has now sold his own Marrickville restaurant and retired, but his descendants are still carrying on his skills and his tradition in a couple of restaurants in Sydney. The Bay Hong is one of them So, if you want to taste the food government dignitaries in Vietnam used to eat at their functions then go to Bay Hong restaurant on Crown Street.
By the way, the prices won’t cost you an arm and a leg, the waitresses are charming and friendly. And the service? The word “excellent” came to my mind, but don’t take my word for it, come and try for yourself. You be the judge.
As a Asian food lover I am so glad our group chose this place to dine. Last saturday night our group walked past this place on Crown St and saw this restaurant packed!! we didn't think we could get in however gave it a shot. The hostess pulled an extra table out and tried to squeeze our group of 10 in.
We started off with the S+p calamari, can't go wrong with that it was juicy and soft and crunchy on the outside. Then for entree a to die for dish 'little egg wrapped with prawn paste on a crisp bread' while hot the egg yolk melts in your mouth, the stuffed boneless chick was just as good served with plum sauce...and lastly the dessert tasting plate was the best!!!
I definitely suggest this place and would come back!!
Stumbled across Crown Street Bay Hong, after a long day of shopping Sydney was quite a delightful experience. I don't come to Sydney very often but everytime I come here I seems to discover something new.
The atmostphere was very welcoming, I love the relaxing ambience in the place. As a French food lover, the escargot entry dish immediately striked my fancy, it was definitely a finely made dish. I loved the subtle lemon grass flavour and the good mix of herbs, meat and escargot. The ginger fish was also my other favourite, I still can't forget it after returning home. I am currently on my mission to find a similar dish here in Melbourne.
Overall, Bayhong was a great experience, love the service, the foods and the great Crown St vibe. Will definitely come back to visit the next time I am in Sydney!
My partner and I are weekly regulars from RQ the old restaurant that was located here we haven't been here since it was taken over, however I am glad I did!!
I loved it here!! it was just as good as the RQ on the other hand I am quite disappointed with the reviews that I have read from Mike there. As we came in with a group of 10 not booked, the lovely young hostess has re-organise the Restaurant just to sit us in. As we sat down we were offered to try their house specialties which is the S.P Calarmari, it was so delicious just like the review from the Good living said and the main course was just as nice.
We will definitely be back with our group as everyone of us was very pleased! Keep up the good work!
I and my partner are regular customer. We are alway spend dinner time at Bayhong every weekend. It's hard to get a place if you don't have a booking on saturday.
I didn't have time to write a comment, but today when have time to seat down and read all the comments from other about Bayhong. I was disappointed about what they wrote. However, I and my partner did and will come to have a great dinner time at Bayhong. We have chance to try all the great dishes, and have chance to seat down to relax where we are deserve.
Nice place to have a dinner, definite will come back.
Contrary to the positive reviews here, this place is awful. The service was abrasive. The food was dry and flavourless and the atmosphere was dank. Don't bother. Red Lantern or any number of other nearby Viet places blow this out of the water.
Shame on Sydney for allowing places like this to survive when there are so many excellent restaurants nearby. Obviously I won't be going back!
Checked out this place with my in laws on saturday after all the raving good reviews. Perhaps I had my hopes too high and ended up pretty disappointed.
When we arrived, we were immediately asked if we wanted a plate of salt pepper calamari before we had a chance to look at the menu. Strange but ok by us since I am a huge calamari fan. We then ordered the stuffed crab, fish, stir fried mixed veges, and a beef dish and pancake.
The calamari was a complete let down. It was too salty, and totally non crunchy for a fried dish. Not to mention the super small serving for the price. I have definitely had much better calamari in Sydney.
The steam fish with sauce was also a complete let down. The sauce didn't go well at all and while the fish was a good size, unfortunately wasn't worthy of any compliment. It was even overcook which is pretty unacceptable for a restuarant doing Asian dish. The mixed vege was too salty and in fact, the whole night, the dishes were pretty inclined to have too much salt in them.
The only saving grace and worth complimenting was their stuffed crab which was full of flavour and taste. It was small and delicate but worth every bite that I actually ordered a second helping since everything else was a let down. Good presentation of food isn't enough for me who is regular to Viet food.
Perhaps it was a crowded night resulting in the utter letdown. However, for a Viet restaurant in Sydney, I had expected better standard here than that of a small stall I had eaten in the backpacker alley in HCM Vietnam.
Wow! You have to try this place. We happened upon Bay Hong completely by accident, and gee are we glad we did.
We started with the Salt and Pepper calamari, which I try in just about every restaurant I go to, and this was one of the best. Then we had the pork skewers and the Lolot beef rolls. These beef rolls had the most amazing combination of flavours, and the demonstration from the waitress made it lots of fun.
For mains we had the Duck Basket and the Crispy Fish. The fish was to die for, even my partner who doesn't really like fish was raving about it, and I was digging around the fishhead searching for any other bit of flesh I could find. The Duck basket was yummy too. As the other reviewer said, you must try the combo dessert which was fantastic. The only problem was that I had to share it with 4 others!! Perfect if you just want a taste though.
The atmostphere is great, and the decor is very nice and modern. The meal was very reasonably priced, we even had to order wine as we hadn't passed a bottle shop. Hong, the owner/waitress was fantastic and made our meal a real treat.
