SMH Good Food Guide 2007 - One Chefs Hat
Overview
The Restaurant is at the Northern end of the Pavilion with views across the shark net towards the Heads (the cafe is at the Southern end). The restaurant is comfortable, yet with the feeling of understated elegance. The emphasis is on fresh produce grown by small producers.
Update: I wrote the original review in Dec 2007, went back just the two of us in July. Superb quality and just enjoyed the cuisine so much. World class dining - Australia doing it well.
Previous Review: Fabulous dining with great location. The only mistake we made was going with teenage children who did not really appreciate the cuisine. It was a mistake by us given it is expensive - we just should not have taken teenagers there.
But from our point of view, it was truly fabulous. Well presented food and sublime taste experience. Excellent wine list but also priced at the top end especially for French wine. Great food but expect top dollar when you book.
Amazing menu and service. We had the degustation menu for lunch, but opted out of dessert. Food was fresh, beautifully presented and very enjoyable. Worth the money.
Update: I went for lunch again on Friday but this time I have enough details to write a more comprehensive review. Everything was as perfect as I remember from last year. My entree was the yellow fin tuna sashimi - once again immaculate presentation and blending of flavours.
My main was the ocean trout with prawns and pancetta. Surprising but delicious fusion of flavours. Again, no room for dessert. I had a coffee and petit fours. The petit fours were exquisite.
This is a lovely reataurant that let's itself down by the service experience and the pricing. We lunched there again today for my grandaughter's birthday. All the food dishes were superb and the wines very good.
Service was stretched when it came to desserts. There were long delays and requests for birthday greetings for the guest of honour were not followed despite three requests, on reservation, on arrival and on order. Delays in serving desserts and cheese and biscuits were inexplicable and detracted from the experience.
Needless to say when the bill was requested, it arrived with undue dispatch. The fixed price menu is unnecessarily restrictive and expensive for diners who don't want two or more courses. All in all, Bathers still presents an attractive package but more attention is needed to ensure a perfect experience.
Superb location with excellent views. The food never disappoints. The pizza is out of this world, great coffee and a quality establishment! One of my favourite places to visit, especially in winter.
Food average, service strange. Not flexible about seating when we didn't like being shoved in close between couples. Another restaurant resting on the fact that they are in a great location and have a decent reputation.
The degustation menu is for the truly ravenous. If only we had the extra capacity to truly enjoy what was offered, but by the dessert (a platter with one of each piece of pudding!) we could not even be rolled out through the doors. Sigh!
In a nutshell this place was relaxing and gorgeous, the evening waterviews were breathtaking. The food and the service both equally fantastic, and the dessert(menage a trois des chocolats) in particular beyond description!
I arrived at 8pm for my 8pm booking but we didn't get a seat until 8:30pm. OK, not a problem. The problem came when we waited over an hour for our mains. The waitress kept telling us the dishes are "being plated and should arrive in about 5 minutes." This delay tactic helped to keep us in our seats. (I normally walk out after 40mins)
When our mains finally arrived, we were so frustrated that we barely tasted the food. There was no apology from the waitress - nothing. To my partner, happy anniversary! Sorry that we missed the movie we were planning to see.
The food is supposed to be good but I couldn't tell from the poor service.
Very disappointing service. Does not do justice to the good food. Waiter did not introduce himself, nor explain the menu at all. Some asked for degustation meals and were told that we could not have that individually. Some then asked for the market day special meals and again told that could not be done individually, needed to be the whole table. Tried again and then some could have the special meals. Not a good start to the evening. We would have been happy if that had all been explained before we started to go through the menu. There was very limited explanation of the meals in the special market menu.
We would not go back to the restaurant section again. Far too expensive and there better places in Sydney where food and service are on a par, as well as a good view.
Fabulous food, fabulous location - however you do get the feeling that the restaurant don't think they need to try too hard because its such a nice outlook. The atmosphere is a little sparse and the tables although almost too large so you can't hear your partners intimate conversation, are rather close to each other.
The waiter was very nice and not pretenious, although you might expect such an expensive restaurant to have more attentive silver service. I couldn't say anything bad about the food - we had the goats cheese pasta for entree (shared) the lamb 3 ways was tasty although quite simple, and my wife had Charr (salmon like) which was perfectly cooked and matched with tasty side orders; the mango and passionfruit assiette dessert was also good - although we did wonder what the triple chocolate dessert may have offered.
The wine list is lovely, simple offerings by glass but the ones we tried were really good (at $15 per glass)
In summary lovely place, lovely food - but it really should be for the price - it doesnt pay to think about that too much, just enjoy the experience!
