My friend and I dined at lunch and chose pastas with garlic bread. The food was really tasty and our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately my penne contained a hidden piece of wire scrubber which lodged in my throat. Thankfully I managed to cough it up and the waitress came to see if I was okay and to offer an apology and another meal. I told her that I was okay and said that I was happy to continue with the meal I had because it was delicious.
Then the owner approached me to offer a very 'defensive' apology which left me feeling as though he thought that I had staged the whole thing to get a free meal. (Which, by the way, was not asked for nor was it offered) I was just so relieved that I didn't have to go to hospital. Despite the good food and excellent service, I will not be returning.
A favourite local for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Service was always attentive, and food made with love, whether you are after an Italian sandwich, pasta, or bacon and eggs, plus good coffee and tea. Very accommodating for prams despite the available space - they will make it work.
Food is good and the coffee is fine, but every time we go there we feel like we are interrupting the wait staffs social endeavours. There seems to be one waitress there that is doing the work of 5 (Bravo to you my dear!), whilst the rest discuss all and sundry, leaving patrons to sit and ponder what might be on the menu whilst looking at dirty dishes piled up on neighbouring tables. Waiting 15minutes to receive the two pieces of toast that is promised with the big breakfast is very frustrating, especially when you have to watch the 'busy' staff preen and pout in front of that damn mirror. A quaint space with great things on the menu, where you want to sit with your paper and chill, just a little too frustrating to do so.
I've lived around the corner from Bar Contessa for the best part of 5 years. Weirdly it was only recently that we went to have something to eat - thanks to the Entertainment Book. Well I know good breakfast isn't too hard but the breakfast we had was great. Poached eggs were yellow and runny, mushrooms garlicky and buttery and Sausages herb-tastic. The coffee at Bar Contessa was great and the service was just as friendly. The only bad thing was a greatest hits George Michael CD on the stereo which still didn't put me off the place. I've been back almost every weekend since we first went - it's a great spot. Not too busy but busy enough.
Finally somewhere to go for an authentic italian meal at a decent price. Large portions. Great coffee. BYO no corkage fee. Loved the music they play. Enjoyable experience at minimal cost.
Great coffee, great looking cafe chocolate leather booths very comfortable. Make sure you book. We strolled in on a Friday night had an authentic Italian huge portion pasta, bruschetta with ricotta and salmon to start. YUM and for dessert the best sticky date with butter scotch sauce huge pieces of actual date in this cake.
