I had lunch on Saturday at this venue, there seemed to be a staff shortage and the staff that took our order then went to the kitchen to make the food!! The food when it arrived was nice as was the coffee. But we had to ask for serviettes then water, the water came but no glasses and it went on in this fashion. I wouldn't want to visit this venue when there were more than 10 people.. they just don't seem to be able to handle it.
A tragedy to witness this descent in ordinariness. Again a management change has decimated what was a weekly outing for us for @ 20 years. What were these people thinking!
Food has lost its clean sharp lines and service is woeful. Ambience and value have suffered accordingly. Have to find somewhere else in Norton Street.
I'm sorry, I did not like this place much at all. Have tried dinner and breakfast here. Both times there were problems. Of particular note was the disapppointing dessert. During dinner, even though we sat insider we were continually coughing from the cigarette smoke that blew in through the open verandah.
Having lived in Leichhardt some time ago, I still go back specifically to eat here. It is great value and you can guarantee the food is always going to be fantastic. It is soul food, the stuff we're used to getting at home. Basic recipes but done really well. The desserts are good old fashioned homestyle baking. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, it's all good.
We went to Bar Baba based on recommendations from eatability. I cannot believe we didn't discover this place earlier, what a fantastic little café - just good honest food without the hype. We went for breakfast and I had the salmon eggs Benedict which was very tasty. Everything was well proportioned including the sauce and the salmon, the right mix is hard to find sometimes. My boyfriend had the big breakfast which was big enough to be filling and with the bacon and sausage fresh, and cooked to perfection (also hard for cafes to get right most of the time). Absolutely fantastic service and best breakfast in Leichhardt for sure.
I had a farily resonable meal here, loved sitting in the courtyard. The pasta was ok - not the greatest but this place is a bit of a Leichhardt insitution, isn't it?
From the comments here and from what I've heard, this place is supposed to be good. I have to say though that the food we got was very average. If I ran an Italian restaurant I'd be horrified to serve a Tomato, Basil and Bocconcini salad where the tomatoes - supposed to be the star of the dish - were pale red, almost pink colour, hard as rocks and devoid of any flavour as they did here. I know it's winter but you can still get great ripe hydroponic tomatoes anywhere y'know!!! The duck risotta I had was ok ... the meat was nice but the risotto isn't the best in town. To it's credit though, I do prefer risottos that are not done heav-handedly with tonnes of butter and parmesan like Baba's. Service was good though, ... friendly wait staff and nice cosy atmosphere.
