The food is excellent, however, the variable level of service lets this effort go to waste. Is a friendly greeting upon arrival too much to ask? The interior seems to be an attempt to recreate a UK style cafe. However, this look is taken a little far as evidenced by the amount of dirt and dust that restoons the walls at the back of the venue.

The senior staffs have hung new expensive art works under rusty dirty lighting. Being from the UK I have not seen this look there. Great quality food, poor service, questionable decor and service, happy to write a more complementary review if this changes.

Decent food but the rudeness of the service really detracted from the experience, won't be going back in a hurry.

Very decent cafe. Food was very good as was the value. The service was a bit curt and slow but they were busy, perhaps, putting on another person for the morning rush would be a good idea.

I took a group of eleven people to Bar Mattino last Sunday for brunch for my niece's first birthday and it was a fantastic experience all round.

Bar Mattino is not a huge space, but the lovely owners accommodated us really comfortably. As soon as we started to arrive drink orders were taken and a huge red pot of large leaf tea had arrive infront of me in minutes, I was one very happy chica. I don't drink coffee, but the others said the coffee was great.

As for the food, the wondrous chef managed to serve all eleven of us at the same time, the food was hot and delicious. I had the breakfast panini (half was munched by my little niece who though she can't yet talk, obviously rated the food. Everybody else was also happy with their various feasts. Serving sizes were very generous. We had also brought a cake with us and the owners brought it out with the one candle alight.

I will definitely be going back to Bar Mattino. The owners are great, the service is great, the food and coffee is great. All wrapped up in a neat little package. What more could you ask for. Thanks Bar Mattino!

In an area of town under-serviced by cafés, two of the most popular entries sit opposite one another, each with a staunchly loyal following. The service here has particular warmth, and the serves are definitely bigger. So you might want to bring a friend if you decide to take on the brimming Mattino Antipasto Plate ($20). Ever-changing daily specials help win lunchtime regulars – Pan Fried Mahi Mahi with Aioli, Salad and Hand-Cut Chips ($23) provides a large and filling plate of Friday lunch indulgence. A more achievable Salad of Serrano Ham, Figs, Bocconcini and Balsamic ($22) shows off Chef Sebastian Tyson’s eye for good produce.

Clever half-and-half options like Half Soup and Sandwich ($10) allow for indecisiveness and are kind on the pocket; with selections like a Reuben Sandwich with hearty Char-Grilled Tomato Soup. You’ll even find some modern British comfort food like a Chip Butty with Fried Egg ($12) on thick toast and a breakfast of Welsh Rarebit with Asparagus ($14). The coffee’s handled better on this side of Meagher Street; but Vittoria is far from my favourite roast, so I take mine in a subtler Coffee Frappe ($5), or abandon it completely with a creamy Vanilla Milkshake ($6).

I always have lunch at Bar Mattino and the food and service have always been great. The steak sandwich with chips and aioli is my favourite. You can tell the owners really love good food, service is friendly and quick for such a busy cafe.

I was introduced to Sebastian the owner when dining at Chedi Thai in Newtown. I knew that the recommendation had to be good coming from the owner of Chedi. I go to Bar Mattino at least once a week and try to make it on Sundays for the roast. They really deliver way beyond your expectations for a cafe.

This is one of Sydney's best cafes come casual dining restaurant. The daily salad is unbeatable and Sunday lunch not to be missed. Any fish or pasta dish is worth ordering and won't disappoint. It can get busy so get there before the lunch crowd.

Lil Neecy and I stopped by for a sunday brekky recently. Standard foods like poached eggs, mushrooms, bacon, tomato's and avocado prepared extremely well and to our liking with good coffees. You can't go wrong with this place. Excellent value: two full brekky's and 4 coffees for $17.50 each, I just love seeing a big, jolly chef in the kitchen. You know that you will receive good tasting food and plenty of it.
