We had such high hopes. We had our second night out in a row, just one of a handful of nights since having a child 8 months ago, thank god for the grand parents. Living in Newtown, every second restaurant is Thai, crazy. Had some good ones, like Pad Thai for a cheap meal and Pork dish at Bank Hotel being the best I have had ever.
This restaurant looks appealing from street level with candles throughout, authentic thai displays, and the option to eat traditional style on a mat or using standard tables. We opted for sitting on floor at the very front of the restaurant, high hopes well in tact. Then discovered no alcohol available, at all, so had to duck out and grab a bottle of Sav Blanc. No problem.
We decided to order 3 entrees and two mains. All okay so far. Curry Puffs arrived, unfortunately, the stock standard frozen variety served at many King St Thai establishments, but ok, that is until we bit into it, still cold/frozen in the centre. It took some time to waive down the waiter, and, holding the plate of frozen curry puffs towards him, before we could even speak, he said, "curry puffs too cold", which we said "yes".
Then another waiter followed soon after to say they were out of satay chicken skewers...."what else would we like?". We chose spring rolls. I can never undertand how a restaurant can run out of a staple. It takes 5 minutes to make a satay sauce, 5 minutes for someone to grab some chicken from a supermarket.
Successively, new curry puffs, spring rolls and money bags came out. Given the issues with 2 of these dishes, were had only just begun eating these, when my "Pork Thai Style" arrived. Ok. We continued to the point where we had exhausted the entrees, and had what I wanted of the Pork (v little flavour), and my wife's bail chilli chicken (bland) had not arrived.
Needless to say, we had already agreed this restaurant had done its dash. My wife ordered an ice cream, and before this had even arrived, our bill was presented to us, without being asked. This was 9.15 pm on a saturday night.
The service here is fine and particularly attentive when you are paying the bill, the ambience is v good, potentially the best of a Thai Restaurant in Newtown, but the CD with just 5 tracks, including one song that skipped every 15 minutes, was a little irritating after an hour.
You go our for dinner for the experience, but ultimately, for food you can't generate, (or don't want to generate) at home. The food here was simply terrible. Even if we hadn't experience the issues we had with our dishes, the food was simply "comoditised" and overpriced given what other options are available on King Street/Enmore Road.
Always had great meals here. If you are going to a show or concert at the Enmore Theatre, show them your ticket for the advertised special. Service can sometimes be a little slow but if they know you have to be out at a certain time, they serve you really quickly.
Ate here on the weekend as it was just across the Road from Enmore theatre.
We wanted to eat Thai, checked the restaurant out and there seemed to be quite a bit of people in there.
Service was good, food was nice, only thing that wasn't nice was their tom yum goong - the soup tasted very fishy (don't think the prawns were fresh) nor did it taste like tom yum soup. The price of the soup was overpriced $18.50 for a little bigger than a normal bowl of soup, I thought the soup would be served in a big bowl? Apart from the soup everything else was quite nice and tasty. The entree and curries were nice.
My family and friends have been coming to Bank's Thai for over 10 years now. I have been here with groups of 20, family outings with the kids and romantic dinners for 2 and have never been disappointed! Sam, the owner, is a star and a great host. Try the Massaman Curry, you won't be disappointed!
Our booking, made around a week in advance, was incorrectly taken as four people for 8 pm instead of six people for 7 pm. We were asked to ‘stand’ and wait for about 10 minutes. We were then escorted upstairs and a makeshift table was organised for us while we stood there. The table accommodated four people not six and was awkwardly situated across the doorway. We expressed our discontentment over this and were advised that we could not get another table for another hour.
When we decided to leave, we were told if we wait five minutes a table downstairs would be available, and it was. One of our mains came out with the entrees, we sent it back and it was brought out again with the mains, stone cold (salt and pepper squid). It had obviously been sitting there for at least 40 minutes. We sent it back, again, and it came back refried. We ordered six main dishes and at least four of them contained long hairs, one of our friends almost choked on a hair.
We believe this is disgusting and a very basic food-service hygiene rule obviously not followed. Apart from this the candles used on the tables are fast burning open flame which is, I’m fairly certain, not only illegal but a fire hazard. The food, whilst tasty, was ruined by the hairs, and we basically gave up complaining in the end. The final price worked out to about $52 per couple, so I guess we weren’t charged for the hairs. There is a lot of competition amongst Thai restaurants in Sydney, this fiasco needn't have been endured.
We dined here with our 3 kids (10, 7 and 2 years). Suggest that you try to book the cushion seat at the front of the restaurant. It is a great way of "locking in" a toddler and preventing them from wandering around the restaurant because you can only enter the seating from one direction (it is hard against a wall). The kids also get a kick out of sitting on the cushions. The dining area is relatively small, so I strongly suggest that you book on Fri and Sat nights. Food is delicious, service is good.
Fairly tasty Thai food, although probably not spicy enough for my tastes. Service is very friendly, and we also experienced the 'magic candle' and 'special birthday gift' in the back room. Decor is curious at best, and they might want to rethink their choice of music. Good, but not great, value.
Was absolutely disgusted by the way we were treated by the senior staff of this place. We were eating our meals leisurely when the waiters rushed to take our plates away and brought us the cheque without us having asked for it. When we asked about seeing the dessert menu the senior staff said that they were too busy and we "eat too slow"!!! Not only is the service extremely disappointing, the food is way overpriced for what you get. Utterly disgusted with this place, you couldn't pay me enough money to go back.
We had a very enjoyable meal on a busy Sat night. Definitely try the pumpkin special. Service was fine. Meals came promptly, nice and hot (temp), $25 per head for 4 of us so good value. BYO great at only $2 corkage.
We are not from Sydney and were basically there, on our son's advice, for a family reunion - we had the room in the back. We could move around and talk without disturbing the other diners, the food was fabulous - very happy, recommended to anyone.
