Great Thai food I have never been disappointed eating here. It looks expensive but the food portions and taste justify the price.

Don't believe the negative reviews. Sumalee Thai offers some of the best Thai food in Newtown. The only hitch is it can be a tad busy, it is downstairs in the suburb's largest pub, after all and the servings are large, which means you really only need one main to serve two people, lessening the choice but increasing the value. They tend to get busy and have been known to mess up an order but the standard of food is consistently high. You really can't go past it.

A fairly unusual restaurant being buried under a large pub in a mostly gay and lesbian or alternative suburb, and the strange copses of tropical trees all around. You also have to sit on long wooden benches like you're at a barbecue or a school cafeteria.
We had no run-ins with the service on the 3 times we've been here. Overall I like the food, they do some original things, and some of the dishes are large and good value. Meanwhile some of the dishes esp. prawn dishes I find small and expensive. It is really the only resort available for hungry guys at 10pm on a weeknight.

Kinda odd, loved going downstairs away from the crowds and cold, yet we had this rude staff member keep coming over and slamming a “reserved” sign on our table, what’s the deal with that? The place was more than half empty so we thought its quite rude that there was no explanation. Didn’t mind the drinks and we had some pretty decent pub food, I would return again to check out the food properly.

Took a friend for lunch on a sunny day, lucky it was midweek as it seemed we had the place to ourselves. However, I ask for prawn skewers... get chicken skewers with chicken so tough I nearly dislocated my shoulder trying to pull it off. Overall it's an awesome and pretty venue, but I would dread going there when it's really busy.

Whilst the food at this place is ok, it is considerably overpriced and the service is the worst I have ever experienced.
Going with a group of friends, we were made to place three orders under three different numbers for the same table all because we wanted to split the bill three ways!
Four of the five dishes arrived in a reasonable amount of time.
Ten minutes later... my partner was still waiting for his dish. I asked the manager how much longer and he informed me it was on its way. Another 10 minutes later... still waiting.
This time I again asked the manager, who went into the kithcen and quite obviously discovered that the meal had been forgotten. I asked for a refund on the late meal, but as you have to pay up front, that was a waste of time. I asked to speak to someone else and he simply walked away from me. The manager was unapologetic, rude, dismissive and arrogant. I will NOT be returning!

Some friends and I recently went to degustation at the bank downstairs. Firstly we were asked to pay before we dined which I found to be a sneaky way of locking us in, preventing us from complaining and refusing to pay, which I would have done had I not been so keen to get out of the place. After waiting 30 minutes for the first course to arrive, the wine soon followed.
2 minutes later a waitress was at our table asking us to skull our first glass of wine so she could fill the glass with new wine. This happened twice, even after refusing then asking for more glasses to avoid the skulling. The food wasn't 2 bad although it wasn't that great either. The service was some of the worst I've ever had in Sydney, so if you're up for an argument I'd say go, otherwise avoid this place like the plague.

You really must not believe everything you read. Prices are high, however, the courses are so big that 1 course serves 2. Go with a few people and don't overorder and you will be surprised how cheap it is. The food is very good and its a pub, so what do you expect, silver service. Since its renovation the ambience is great, there are many worse pubs in Sydney. Give it a try.

The drinks and food are expensive so it not great value. You cannot move for the amount of people in the bar, so ambience is non existent. And the service comes with a huge serve of attitude. Do yourself a favour, Newtown is full of excellent places to eat and drink so don't waste your money at the Bank.

Fodd and service are reasonably good. Value for money, you can find better quite nearby. The biggest downfall of this establishment are its "door people" too much attitude and not enough customer awareness.
