A very busy night but the staff managed well. The food was ordinary although I quite liked the tofu amongst the vegetables. Definitely one of the better 'mixed greens' dishes I've had as it actually consisted of a variety of vegetables which were rather flavoursome. As for dessert, well, the menu is very limited as it is in most Chinese restaurants. Think frozen cheesecake and vanilla ice cream.
Fairly typical Westernised-Chinese, it was nice enough for what it was, and the restaurant was sort of a bit tacky in a way that is almost charming. The szechuan sauce lacked any real bite, and the shredded beef was really quite terrifyingly 'crispy' (I don't remember it being advertised as such although I'm probably wrong) and the pork, on the other hand, was a little suspiciously overly-tender.
The stir-fried greens were actually a high point, haha. Nevertheless, it was really a perfectly pleasant meal, although the restaurant, perhaps, had less to do with that than they should have.
We had a lovely meal marred only by one extremely rude waiter who ignored our table pointedly, is a shame as the other waiter was lovely. Food was excellent, Honey Prawns and Chicken with cashew nuts a particular fav. Also as the place is byo is extremely good value. One of our party is chinese/ozzie and she was very happy with the food too. We will definitely be back.
Food quality is fine, the service is good - but this is a classic gwei lo restaurant - ie. it's aimed squarely at non-Chinese, and the friendly manager admitted so. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this, and for its market, it's a good place.
However, those in the Eastern suburbs seeking the variety of more authentic Chinese fare should head a little further to Kam Fook in the Westfield, or obviously outside the East. The menus are only in English, which is a clear indicator of their primary market.
I've given the food a low rating because I personally don't like McAsian - but if you do, this place is fine.
Attention all Sydney foodies! Please don't go here. All that will hapen is that you'll get your knickers in a twist about stepping back into 1970. To everyone else, do you remember the first time you had Chinese? Well if you want to re-create that, crank up the Richard Clapton in the car, head over to Bondi Junction and dine at Bambusia, you will not be disappointed. It is excellent. Shredded beef, Peking duck, Kapitan prawns. And it's not super expensive. It's just old school so don't go there expecting modern oz-chinese.
Bambusia always makes you feel welcome and I have always found the staff friendly and the service prompt. I eat there weekly whether it is dine in, take away or delivery. Richard always makes you feel welcome and does his best to find a table even when it is busy. Recommend booking if there are more than 3 of you especially on a weekend.
Good place to go if you are looking for a quick bite that has dependable Chinese food. The variety is a bit to be desired but the service is prompt and the location is convenient. Easy parking and always opened.
Only ever had home delivery. Food is always fresh and hot. Service is excellent and delivery always on time in a fantastic time frame! Best chinese food in Sydney! Always fantastic never had a bad experience!
