Food is superb with very large portions. If you are not used to this or don't have enough time, order only two courses. Bernard is excellent! As for the service, I am amazed that anyone could say Sandra is rude. She does have a very dry sense of humour but never rushed us nor was overbearing. Some people should take themselves less seriously. We will be returning.
Earlier comments are all valid. It’s possible but not guaranteed! To have a great meal and a good time at Emma's and I think it worth being a bit flexible. Emma is friendly but not professionally trained and it shows. She's probably a bit overwhelmed by the popularity of the place and copes by organising the customers to suit her needs for quick turnover rather than theirs for a relaxed meal. The food arrives far too quickly and nearly all at once; some diners report being hustled along to make room for others.
Here's my tip. Ring and find out what would be a good time to go. Later (8:00PM+) is better than early as you won't feel rushed to finish. Order your entrees and hold off ordering the mains until you are ready for them. I thought the garlic chicken was a knockout and everything else very good and good value too.
I have only been to BEH once and it was one too many times. From the moment we walked in, the waitress sneered at us and was generally really rude. She made us feel like a pair of tramps who had walked into her fine dining restaurant begging for food. Her haughty attitude was simply unbelievable. Don't listen to the lame excuse about that is how the French act - I have been to France many times and have always found French people to be a friendly bunch.
We went on a quiet night and she just ignored us, refusing to take our order. When we finally got some attention, she took our order rudely and stormed off like we had just insulted her very being.
The food was average, I've had better French food in Sydney. It's a shame as the decor is nice and could have potential to be a decent restaurant, if only they relaxed a little and was friendlier. People come out to dine to enjoy themselves and have a good time, not to be looked down at.
We went to dinner on a weeknight, with a group of friends, who had been to the restaurant before. (Having read the reviews here, it was with some trepidation.) We had no problems with the service, but I can understand the previous reviewers' comments, as the waitress certainly had an unusual and abrupt manner. The food though, was good, with very generous portions and we had a wonderful evening.
Venturing into Balmain last Sunday we randomly chose to try this eatery for lunch and walked in at 12noon and sat down. The place was only half full with what seemed adequate staff on duty however, none would approach us. Following 15 minutes (no exageration) of trying to make eye contact with staff for a menu, finally a scowling woman just plonks them on our table and walks off, no hello, no may I take drink orders, no acknowledgement whatsoever, just an abrupt scowl! Her rudeness was unacceptable and we no longer felt we would enjoy any food in such an unpleasant environment. We walked out in disgust.
We decided to have a sunday brunch with friends here, NEVER again. We were 'pushed' to a table by a mature lady who turned out to be the senior staff, very rude. Then ignored for quite some time. We ordered and found that you have to take the dish exactly how it is, no changes or exceptions allowed.
The food arrived was below average to say the least and with no service present, we finished less than half, paid and left. The service is rude or non existent, the food below average, how does this place stay open when there are so many great places around.
Had lunch with four others. We all had different dishes and we were all very happy with the food quality. And great value and good atmosphere too. I don't understand all the comments about the 'older waitress' as she was fine with us. Not overly friendly but I don't need that, maybe Balmain people expect sycophantic serving staff.
Despite the fact we found the senior staff very rude, my husband and I used to frequent this restaurant because there was a few dishes on the menu we really enjoyed. However, after witnessing one episode in which she was incredibly rude to her staff and was slamming objects down onto the table, we decided not to go back.
After quite some time, we decided to give the restaurant another go as we were missing the scrambled mustard eggs. However, it ended up being a very bad decision. This woman was incredibly rude to us once again, and even accused us of trying to do a runner when my husband simply turned back from walking towards the register to collect an item he had forgotten at his table. I have never been so insulted and will not return to this restaurant on principal! Don't waste your time with this place!
Like some other comments already suggest, this is absolutely the Worst service in Balmain. I took a recommendation from a work colleague for this café and I will certainly not be listening to him again. We took friends for brunch and the older women, who appears to own the place is so rude, it is unbelievable. Food is average and the service sinks the ambience as well. Do yourself a favour and stay away, there are many other great eateries in Balmain.
My husband and I have been coming to this place for just over a year and have found the food to be very good on all occasions. Service has been hit and miss however I agree with the comment that the lady is a little different and is eager to discuss food and drink options. Can get a little noisy when it fills up but overall we will keep coming back.
