As a local it’s very disappointing that I can’t just pop over the road for a beer and nice meal. The latest owners have no idea. It's now a pub without a name. Not sure if that is just a gimmick, if so someone should tell them that it has already been done. The service is atrocious, no one seems to care. Oh well I'll wait till new management comes in (I’m sure it won’t be long) and maybe will give it another chance then.

Well for a start this is no longer the Belgian Beer Cafe, just a Beer cafe and a pretty ordinary one at that. This pub restaurant has had more changes than I can remember, some good, some not so good. Unfortunately, this is one of the not so goods. Pretty ordinary menu and very average food. But the beers are still good and you've gotta love that little courtyard out back. All I need to do now is wait for it to change hands again!

My boyfriend and I came in mid day on a Friday, the place looked fantastic. The service was delightful and genuine. We had the Kangaroo special and it was amazing, the chef personally told us the specials of the day and the food came exactly as described. We will definitely be back for a return visit.

Went here on Thursday after having a great experience at the Cammeray restaurant, with great friendly service and good food. But were bitterly disappointed, walked in and waited and waited to be seated without the slightest acknowledgement from the one waiter or even the two barstaff, who admittedly were busy.

The waiter then walked towards us, walked straight past us! without as much as "I'll be with you in a minute". That was enough we left and walked across the road and had a very nice meal with great service at Capellas, a new Italian restaurant. If I went to the local pub I would be more forgiving but for the prices Belgian beer cafe charge I would expect much better treatment. We won't be back.

Never had a bad experience here. Good beer, good mussels and the fries with mayo aren't bad either. Have tried some of the other dishes on the menu such as the duck pate and pork belly bites for an entree. The Flemish stew was also really good and the Dame Blanche and Belgian Chocolate Mousse are both very nice. A good place to enjoy dinner with friends.

One of the few places in Balmain which serves decent beer. Granted a little pricey but the beer does come from half way around the world. What more do you need?! Food is good also and they do a decent trivia night.

Oh yum, I love the thai mussels here with an ice cold beer. The service is so great here, every member of staff is friendly and chatty. A real local feel. A great place for dinner and drinks. Kid friendly too as there is a garden.

My husband and I went here for the first time after the recommendation of a friend and we loved it! The decor and style were warm and amusing and the beers were amazing - expensive yes, but totally worth it! All the staff picks we were given stood up to the test. We ordered mainly off the specials board as I'm not a big fan of mussels and thought it was well above average pub fare. All in all a fun night! We will be back soon for sure.

2 bad experiences at the Belgian! 1st time was on a Friday night where the service was non existent, we had to get out own menus. Food was ok, and drinks are excessively expensive. Our entree balls were cold inside.

Our second visit was yesterday, hoping for an improvement, again it appeared to be self service, and there was no vodka when asked at 3 pm (maybe a quick visit to the bottlo 2 doors up would have been a good idea!?). Food, went to order a BLT, was told none left, then decided on a steak sandwich, and was told none left, and by the way, there is no schnitzel either!

Very disappointing, we will definitely not be back.

We came hoping for the Belgian or at least European version of mussels and frites but were a bit disappointed. The entree of asparagus with poached egg and anchovy butter and gremolata was delicious. However, the mussels were not frozen ones not fresh, they were small and kind of chewy. The fries being a chip-type were tasty enough but I was expecting the shoestring fries you normally get.

Mayonnaise was home made I guess because it was a tad sour. It's an ok place for a get together type of meal coz it's noisy and fun but don't go expecting authentic, fresh Belgian style mussels. It's chain restaurant food.
