Haven't been here for a few years, last time I went it was great. But went on the weekend with friends and while it now looks very swish, the prices are ridiculous for what you get. The portions are smaller too! I would have expected some changes to the menu and sides as well in this time but it's same old, suppose they have to pay for the reno's somehow. The staff could be a bit nicer too, came across as very aloof. We're in no hurry to go back...
I had tried the restaurant before and didn't think much of it. We had Bbq meat and seafood last time. What we got could have been done at home. There was no attempt to change it. Quite average.
We were assured by friends that it was great and they had been going for a while. We were suspected as they generally enjoy quantity over quality (plus they'd been given free salad). We were correct in our assumptions. It was very average pub style food. The salad was OK but nothing great. The mains, whilst large, were decent quality but nothing you could get at a pub for 1/2 to 2/3s of the price. The service was also fairly lacklustre.
I was there on Saturday night. I had the Mussel Buzzara which was lovely and also the mixed seafood and meat platter, the seafood was nice and fresh. The restaurant was very busy and crowded. I found my waiter had good service. I think the restaurant needs some music to make the atmosphere a little more lively.
Also the cabbage/potato salads that were served in Brown plastic 80's style plates need to go. I think the crockery needs to be definitely changed. Overall the food was very good, however, I think the rest of the staff need to go to a customer service course as I didn't believe they provided substantial service considering the amount of people that walked through that door.
I think they need to have one staff member to be at the front desk and greet people as they walk in, this is lacking!!!!
The staff was very rude, she was on the phone making plans for a night out as I was trying to pay the bill. The food was rather bland, no spices or sauces served with and the portion sizes were too small for above average prices. The waitress left five empty entree plates on our tiny table for two as we were trying to eat our mains, not very professional, not going back!
I went to this restaurant about a week ago. The food was okay but not as good as we had expected. The service was terrible. Especially the reception was very unfriendly and we did not feel that we were welcomed at all.
Went on a date here and was surprised how bad it was. I should have read the comments here first! The ambience was crap, no music, staff sitting around between serving people and the place was fairly empty (I can understand why). We got the mixed seafood entree which was a couple prawns and some badly cooked squid, all of which was fairly cold. I also got the bowl of sourkraut-like salad plonked on my table as per the previous review below, which tasted terrible.
Then we had the mains, a salmon served on its own on a plate with nothing else, and a spaghetti marinara that was nothing special. We left with a bad taste in our mouths (both literally and figuritively) and paid far too much considering how bad it was. Do yourself a favour and don't go.
Very bad place to have your dinner. The food is not good and it is served badly over cooked and some of it was actually cold. The staff are very rude. Not coming back !!!
Prawns badly cooked, substituted our morton bay bugs with scampi without telling us then when we asked we were told they hadn't had them for years, although they were on the menu. Service was extremely rude.
I ate here with a group of friends recently and I've never come across such rude and obnoxious staff. We choose the more expensive of the seafood platters based on the fact that it included Balmain Bug. When it arrived sans bug and we asked why the waiter said they hadn't served bug for several years. When we asked why they hadn't taken it off the menu if they didn't serve it, the waiter grabbed our food and tried to take it away.
A few minutes later the manager /owner arrived - when we again pointed out that we ordered based on the bug she flat out lied to us and said they were temporarily out of stock. When we pointed out that the waiter had said they hadn't served bug for years, she conceded that, that was correct and asked us what we expected her to do about it. When we suggested that they correct the menu or at least tell customers ordering the dish that it didn't include bug (since they were charging a higher price for it) she was extremely rude to us and things basically went even further down hill from there.
Bottom line - the food was OK but certainly not worth the grief. I would never recommend the Balkan to anyone!
