Been wanting to go here with my wife for some time and I was not disappointed. Will go back for the food, we had awesome meat and seafood platter for two, was very nice. The desserts were awesome as well pancakes and strudel, finished off a great meal. Don't be shy guys, turn the music up a bit.
Perhaps, you need to be Eastern European to understand how wonderful this place is. The food at the Balkan restaurant reminds me of dinners made by my father's family. Chevapi, Kupus, Vinegar Mashed potato, it's all delicious to me! I recommend the mixed grill for the complete experience!
This restaurant is extremely overated. The food is overpriced, overcooked and poorly presented. The venue is overly furnished with mostly empty tables and loud. The staff are friendly and efficient. This is a cheaps eats cafeteria dressed up as a restaurant.
This place has really gone downhill. About five years ago I brought two overseas guests here and we had a great meal. The steak was terrific such that they still talk about it today. As they are about to re-visit Australia and wanted a return to the Balkan, my partner and I went back to check it out first. Just as well that we did. What a difference.
The atmosphere was akin to a doctor's waiting room, despite the recent refurbishments, the waitress was less than interested, the steak chewy, cheap and tasteless. But the very worst thing about the place was a subtle but pervading sense of homophobia. We felt distinctly unwelcome and couldn't wait to get out. This attitude in a restaurant anywhere is unacceptable but when it’s a restaurant on Oxford Street it’s appalling. I will never return.
This place I guess is one of the old warriors of Darlinghurst. The family history is interesting. I started my comments on this restaurant I think with something interesting of its history, unlike this restaurant today, which isn't at all interesting. The food is overcooked, dry and flavourless. They use nothing but the cheapest cuts of meat, inexpertly handled, grilled to death and served with creamy bland packet sauce mixes. The seafod is universally frozen and swarthy. You can do better at almost anywhere on Oxford Street. On the plus though, they do have some great European beers.
The food here varies from great to a bit dodgy. Went with a mate and we were both starving. I ordered the meat platter which highlighted the scope in the quality of the food. The chicken and the beef were very sub standard while the chevapi were gold. The pork wasn't to bad, but the presentation of the dish was very bad. It looked like left overs from a BBQ. Surely they can work on that and make it look a little more like a dish worth it's rather steep price.
My friend had the scampi which was very good (his words), but on trying it I found it a little powdery and over cooked. The service is also up and down. After sitting down we were asked to move to the upstairs section as the table was apparently pre reserved for someone else. After climbing the stairs (and carrying our own drinks), we had to wait over half an hour for our food. Overall it's not that bad a place, but for the prices you pay, it's not worth it (especially if you're hungry).
Croatian food at its finest!! Some background Croatian music would make the ambience perfect. The chevapi are made by the restaurant, a must try. The waitresses are very friendly and efficient. A great place to eat. Food is always fresh which means alot when it comes to seafoods. Yum. The staff have real genuine European hospitality.
