Food was authentic and tasty, the ambience didn't have a traditional feel, but was cosy nonetheless. We were served relatively quickly, and the food didn't take long to come out. Good value for money. Will be visiting again!

Love this place! Grew up in a Croatian home and always go here for some comfort/home cooking. Its small, but warm and the portions are amazing!

You will not go hungry at this place with the huge portions. The "meat creation" is very tasty. Some of the starters were hit and miss. The pastry entree with spinach and cheese was good. The cabbage rolls were boring and cold from the fridge.
Its a small place which could do with warmer lighting to create some atmosphere. Seating is uncomfortable, wooden slats right on the spine.
The wait staff were there one minute and gone the next for extended periods which was annoying. I'm sure we saw them having a smoke out the back just before we entered the place. There should be one person watching over customers at all times.
On the plus side, there is no corkage which is a rarity. So bring a few bottles and fill up on all the minced meat and cabbage you can muster.

Single ladies, there is a hot boy at this place...make sure u see him. Food is good tasting, but I was disappointed when I got my lunch one day and asked if the stuffed capsicum was vegeterian, the lady said it was, I came back to the office and guess what it was stuffed with meat! not sure why she did this...anyway will never go there again.

We'd never eaten here before and thought we would give it a try. Overall it was a nice place to eat but we nearly ended up walking out before being served. We sat down inside and a lady came out and brought us a bottle of water and walked away. She never came back. Just as we were about to leave some 10 minutes later a gentlemen walked out of the kitchen and my wife called him over to take our orders. We ordered two chevapi plates and a burek. Everything was nice and tasty except for the salad which was way over peppered.
My wife couldn't eat hers but I gave mine a good go. The burek was very different from what I've eaten before (and I've eaten a lot of them all over the world) but they claim it's unique to their part of Bosnia/Serbia (which is where I was born) and these things do change from town to town, not just state to state. And I'm always up for something a little different. Still it was nice and we enjoyed every bit of it. Would we go there again? I think so.
Response from Management:
Dear Kuzman 67,

Thank you very much for your feedback. We apologise for the lengthy wait, that should never have occurred. There have been a few staffing issues of late. This should not happen again. Please continue to visit our restaurant.

Warm regards,

The food is fantastic, and since the change/renovation the place has a really good atmosphere. Every dish I've tried has been great and the garlic prawns are probably the best I've had. the flavours are all authentic and tasty, you certainly don't need to ask for the salt & pepper to be passsed over to you for flavour.
Response from Management:
Thank you Mirko!! Just a reminder, we will be open Easter Saturday :)

Hi, I went there to check out if they had burek, but at the time they only had a spiral pastry dish with cheese that resembled burek, and it was nowhere near the same as the real burek. The staff were lovely and I'm sure the rest of the food is great, but it ain't no burek place.
Response from Management:
Burek is different depending where it originates from. The burek from the central parts of former Yugoslavia is in fact twirled into a spiral with paper thin pastry.

There is also the layered burek version which is predominantly present in Macedonia.

The product we sell is burek just of a different presentation to what you expected or perhaps that you are unfamiliar with,
we are not a bakery place so we do a complete breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu not just burek so in that regard you are correct.

Thank you for your post.

Two of us ate here as it was close to Orange Grove markets. The filling in the burek I had was drier than the ones I have had at other similar establishments.
Service was good. I'm hoping they will fix the wooden seats in the adjacent restaurant bit as it is a bit of a squeeze to manouvre yourself between tables to exit.
On a plus side, a couple of tables of people who obviously knew Balkan cuisine were also eating when we were there.

I'm really surprised that the Balkan Eatery has such a high rating. I used to be a regular lunch customer here, but stopped going due to inconsistent food quality and service. I dropped back in recently, but the experience didn't win me back.
Response from Management:
Thank you for your post.I think that readers and visitors of this site need to know that:
Your revew is inconsistent with reality as the lunch menu is the same every day as is the lunchtime chef as is the quality of her food prep.
If you woud be so kind to tell me exactly what you meant then we may better understand your comment.
The other review you have posted is of a cafe a few doors down from us for which you gave a glowing review of burgers.
Readers can decide on the crebility factor themselves.
As for all the fuss about Balkan Eatery- we sell ony fresh food all made on our premises. We do not re-sell food or use pre packed meats as many cafe's do.We have a full kitchen and open char-grill.
We only use free range eggs, free range chicken and fairly soon, free range bacon as well. Our concern is not only the taste factor but also the health aspect for the benefit of our customers.

I found this place as somewhere that was equidistant between those eating for a pre-Christmas lunch. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the friendliness of the service given the less than salubrious surroundings.
On the down side was the misheard request for no onions in one of the dishes that resulted in one of our party having a plain chicken and chips as an onion-free alternative but for the rest of us the food was great.
For 4 adults and 5 kids, the end bill was a relatively pain free $165. Worth a try!
