#1 Mexican Restaurant in Sydney (Urbanspoon.com) Winner of the Chopping Block 2!!! Highest score ever given by the critic for both seasons. 4.5 out of 5 stars awarded!! "I could marry the Mole." Baja Cantina opened its doors in May of 2006. It was the Chef/Owners vision to bring quality California style Mexican food to Sydney. Backed with 17 years of working with great Mexican chefs in California and all over the US, he has aquired the skill and knowledge to deliver authentic and fresh Mexican cuisine. Tired of too many Sombreros, but unauthentic Tex or Aussie Mexican food, Baja Cantina was conceptualized. With the only authentic Tamales, Baja Fish Tacos, home-made Mexican Chorizo, Carnitas, and real Home made Refried Pinto Beans in Sydney, if not Australia, we aim to satisfy your Mexican cravings. The Chicken Mole, Nachos and Fish Tacos were recently featured during filming of The Chopping Block 2, to rave reviews. The beer garden in the rear will also delight, nothing like it in Sydney or any other Mexican Restaurant. Come give us a try, we promise to remind you of your last Mexican fix over seas, whether in Mexico or California. Best Mex in Sydney!

Not bad at all. The chips were home-made, fresh, and very tasty, as was the chipotle salsa, but expensive at $5 for a little plate. Sangria was nice, but light on the alcohol. Mains were on the small side, but we didn't leave hungry. The service was quick and friendly. It did seem to me to be a bit expensive, but I should know better by now than to expect cheap tasty Mexican food this far from Mexico (or California, as the case may be). You get what you pay for, I suppose.

I did a check of the reviews and was a little unsure of what to expect but. What a find! The best mexican I have eaten since I was last in California. The burritos are enormous and high quality. The other food was equally satisfying and the wine list was well priced.
There were lots of friendly staff and they did a great job working a very busy, happening place. This place can get a little noisy when its busy but that is all part of the fun. I am already booked in for Round 2.

The food took over 1 hour to arrive. The waiter said that that was the way it was. And we were scowling at the four people at the next table who left more than 50% of their nachos to waste until we tasted the food and had to leave our plates uneaten. Can't believe people get away with this level of low quality food and low quality service.

Fantastic! The staff were friendly and helpful right from the beginning, the food was good and the value was great. The servings were generous and very reasonably priced, the place looks great with lots of colour and ambience, the staff were a delight and overall my friend and I walked away having had a fantastic evening! Will be going back real soon!

Moved to the area six months ago, and this place was recommended to me by a friend, and I've been back many times. Really great Mexican food, not sloppy tex mex crap. Great atmosphere. Gets really busy so book ahead! Love the freshly made corn chips and guacamole, simply delicious. Really like the option of black beans instead of refried with your meals. The burrito is so huge you could easily share it between two people!

Went for a party of 16 people. Was annoyed before I even got there that there is no BYO for parties over 6 people. I do not see the logic in this other than it being a cash grab. They stuffed up 4 of our group's orders. Food was passable but nothing worth going back for. Waitstaff were of a poor standard, my partner complained that one barged past her in the narrow corridor to the toilets. We won't be going back out of choice.
Response from Management:
If you were annoyed, why did you even come? The reason we do not allow BYO for parties of more than 6 is because we can not insure that the NSW RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) rules are being met. Fines upto $11,500 can be given to everybody involved, meaning the server, the bartender, any employee involved in your service, and you! Not divided up, up to $11,500 each!!! So, it was not a cash grab, it was for your saftey and ours. Further, I have very cheap Mexican and Australian beers. I like people to enjoy their meals with a drink. We do $8 margaritas Monday - Wednesday and on Sundays. $5 Coronas everyday. I think you both may be a bit over-dramatic. Baja Cantina has a fun and lively atmosphere. As for a staff member "barging" past your wife? Please, you came on a busy Saturday night. The staff move briskly to serve the customers. They do not barge past people. I was told a couple of dishes went to the wrong table, my appologies. Unfortunately mistakes sometimes happen. I was aware of the problem as I observed and helped rectify the mistake myself. Please, next time, if you are annoyed before coming to the door, maybe dine at home.

I liked this place. Decent priced mexican food, not the best I have had but definitely friendly service and relaxed.

Went for a birthday party over the weekend with a group of friends and had a wonderful time. The restaurant was pact which added to the whole atmosphere (you always know you're in a good place when it's full!). The food was amazing, very fast and friendly service and all for about $35 a head. Margarita's were the best I'd ever had and the sangria was simple yet delicious. I'll definitely be coming back!

I've been twice now and I really recommend both the Sangria and the Sope! The portions are generous and usually delivered very quickly after ordering. I haven't had any foul, disappointing experiences with meats being under cooked, having tried the fajita, I found it entirely satisfying (especially with black beans).
This is Mexican food so don't expect lush presentations and gourmet artworks. Focus on the overly generous portion sizes (our party of three ran out of space on our table) and fair prices. Not to mention the entirely satisfying, tasty morsels.

Went here not too long ago after stumbling across it and recognising the name from the chopping block. Was very disappointed in the service and the food. Although it was a saturday night and they were clearly busy, it is a poor excuse for staff that are standing around and chatting while customers are waiting. Had the nachos which lacked meat, while partner had a burrito like thing which was cold in the middle. Awful.
