Overview of Baja Cantina and Beer Garden
#1 Mexican Restaurant in Sydney (Urbanspoon.com) Winner of the Chopping Block 2!!! Highest score ever given by the critic for both seasons. 4.5 out of 5 stars awarded!! "I could marry the Mole." Baja Cantina opened its doors in May of 2006. It was the Chef/Owners vision to bring quality California style Mexican food to Sydney. Backed with 17 years of working with great Mexican chefs in California and all over the US, he has aquired the skill and knowledge to deliver authentic and fresh Mexican cuisine. Tired of too many Sombreros, but unauthentic Tex or Aussie Mexican food, Baja Cantina was conceptualized. With the only authentic Tamales, Baja Fish Tacos, home-made Mexican Chorizo, Carnitas, and real Home made Refried Pinto Beans in Sydney, if not Australia, we aim to satisfy your Mexican cravings. The Chicken Mole, Nachos and Fish Tacos were recently featured during filming of The Chopping Block 2, to rave reviews. The beer garden in the rear will also delight, nothing like it in Sydney or any other Mexican Restaurant. Come give us a try, we promise to remind you of your last Mexican fix over seas, whether in Mexico or California. Best Mex in Sydney!!!
Have been here twice now. The first time, the service was reasonably friendly, but the second time (on a quiet night, too!) we were virtually ignored (as seemed to be the others around us.) Service was quite attentive on the first occasion, but the tables are very close together and we felt crowded in.
The drinks:
Margarita - excellent; can definitely recommend
Sangria - poor
Beers - good prices!
The food:
The first visit - ordered burrito grande with pork for the main. This was perfectly nice, but the meat wasn't great (very much unlike the lovely pork you get in other Mexican restaurants in the area.
The second visit - ordered "Enchilada Grande - Large 8 inch corn tortilla filled with your choice of shredded beef, chicken, carnitas or cheese and bean ~ baked in a guajillo chilli sauce and covered with cheese. Served with rice and beans." I chose cheese and bean. What came out was a smallish flour tortilla with only cheese (and nothing else whatsoever!) inside. Wasn't covered in sauce and cheese, either.
The accompanying rice and black beans were both cold - the former was undercooked and the latter overcooked. My dining companion was not at all impressed with his main, either.
On both occasions, we had house-made corn chips with dips, and these were very good.
The "beer garden" outside is dingy and has uncomfortable plastic seats. The walkway between the inside and outside, and the bathrooms (outside) are not particularly clean.
So, overall, a really mixed bag. Wouldn't recommend, though.
We were at the Baja Cantina for a bday just last week. We had booked to have the set menu as there was about 10 of us. The waitress that was looking after us finally appeared 15 minutes later to abuse us that the menu's we had on the table were not set menu, menu's! These were already on the table when we got there!
Had to ask twice for our jugs of sangria, 15 minutes later they arrived. My sister had to ask 4 times for her diet coke which got there a good hour later.
The bday girl didn't get her meal, when we asked our very unprofessional waitress where her meal was, this was her answer: "someone else has taken your meal, so you'll have to wait till we make you another one"
The food was plentiful which was tasty on the night but the day after suffered terrible stomach pains. Yes it may be value for money but, unfortunately, the rest of the experience outshines this aspect. Poor management and mediocre food its a definite 'miss' for me.
I ordered nachos here, I loved the dips. Ambience was nice, salty nachos, nothing much to say at this stage but I thought I'd give this a nice review. Service is nice too. Value, average.
Having been here 4 or 5 times now, I thought it was time to put in a virtual thumbs up for Baja Cantina! First tip: Book ahead. Hubby and I had always booked and were always seated and served promptly.
To start, we can't go past the mixed dips. The home made corn chips are more-ish and the variety of dips are all tasty and fresh. The mains are huge (I never finish mine) and are delicious. I would recommend selecting black beans when given the choice though, as the re-fried can be less tasty. We have tried the chicken sulza, taco supremo, chimichanga and burrito grande and would happily re-order any of these.
The place is a little cramped (well, it is located in Glebe!) but is colourful and full of character. The service is usually quite good, although we have had a slow bill once or twice. Meals are excellent value for money. Try the sangria and tequila if you're with a large party and you have a recipe for a great night.
Decent Mexican food seems to be one of the hardest to get in Sydney. This place didn't change my opinion. The table we were seated at was bad: 4 of us were seated 2 at one side, 1 at either end, basically in a line as one of the long sides of the table was against a wall, not great for conversation. All the items on the menu sounded the same, so I couldn't choose.
The Mexican beers we tried were pretty tasteless. The food was ok, but absolutely nothing to remember. The fajitas apparently normally come out sizzling but not when we were there. On a plus side the service was quick and when we moved outside to the beer garden the ambience was better. An average experience all round, not bad, but not good either.
Sunday night, me and my partner went to Baja Cantina. When we went there everything looked all right but our night became disaster. The entree was ok but the sharing plate was extra small because we even couldn't fit food in that plate. No body clear up the table after entree. When we tell waiter that we finished the entree she left the dirty cutlery on the table. That was really embarrassing.
The main course came after 20 minutes but it was very bad. It was a tacos but all food was thrown everywhere in plate. Rice was climbing the edge of plate. It took another 20 minutes to come for my partner food. I really don't recommend any single person to go there.
Mexican food in Sydney being what it is, my expectations of having a good meal were not high when a group of us decided to go out to dinner here one night. I am thrilled to say that I was very pleasantly surprised.
Can't say enough how wonderful the meal was. The chicken fajitas were great and huge. The guacamole was made from real avocados (not the pasty junk served elsewhere), the beans cooked with just the right spice, and bell peppers and all the fixings along with it were great. The top-shelf margarita was yummy. At $18 a pop though, I'd have liked to see more of it, as it was served in a small glass. I'll be looking forward to dining here again.
When we arrived on Thursday it had been raining heavily and although initially told this meant outside was closed when I explained it was a special occasion our helpful waiter Tom wiped down a table for us even turning on the outside music and fairy lights just for us to enjoy. The salsa was spicy and enjoyable and the chicken sulza was beautiful and creamy although both my boyfriend and my meal did come out way to quickly to be fresh cooked.
The only downfall would have to be the side of re fried bean and rice which was a tad crunchy and congealed. The sangria was fantastic, and the tequila hit the spot! I would go back again if not for the food but for the service and atmosphere.
Was a party of 18 who visited here last Saturday. Once it arrived the food was fantastic, if a little heavy on rice and we were sat waiting for over 45 minutes for our mains. In their defence the restaurant was busy and we were a big table!
All in all a good night out with tasty food, just don't go there if you are in a hurry.
