#1 Mexican Restaurant in Sydney (Urbanspoon.com) Winner of the Chopping Block 2!!! Highest score ever given by the critic for both seasons. 4.5 out of 5 stars awarded!! "I could marry the Mole." Baja Cantina opened its doors in May of 2006. It was the Chef/Owners vision to bring quality California style Mexican food to Sydney. Backed with 17 years of working with great Mexican chefs in California and all over the US, he has aquired the skill and knowledge to deliver authentic and fresh Mexican cuisine. Tired of too many Sombreros, but unauthentic Tex or Aussie Mexican food, Baja Cantina was conceptualized. With the only authentic Tamales, Baja Fish Tacos, home-made Mexican Chorizo, Carnitas, and real Home made Refried Pinto Beans in Sydney, if not Australia, we aim to satisfy your Mexican cravings. The Chicken Mole, Nachos and Fish Tacos were recently featured during filming of The Chopping Block 2, to rave reviews. The beer garden in the rear will also delight, nothing like it in Sydney or any other Mexican Restaurant. Come give us a try, we promise to remind you of your last Mexican fix over seas, whether in Mexico or California. Best Mex in Sydney!

The best Mexican in Sydney! I love this place. The food is fantastic. I can never go past the fajitas and always end up getting that it is so very filling and comes will salsa, guacamole, sour cream, cheese and more! Sangria is great too. The dips as an entree are great for nibbling on while trying to pick a main.
Wouldn't recommend the squid, thought it was without batter (as the description might indicate) but came out as normal salt and pepper squid, still nice but I found it extremely salty and too heavy.
You must try this place but don't forget to book ahead as they get quite busy.

Food was delicious and came in large servings. Ordered the shredded beef burrito (came with salad and guacamole) and the chicken nachos. Both were delicious and very filling. Value for money was great, chips and dip, two mains, two soft drinks and a margarita for $62! Fantastic!
Only qualms were that the burrito could have had a bit more beef in it and the interior design of the place needs an upgrade (plastic tablecloths etc.).
All in all, wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to someone looking for a cheap, cheerful and tasty meal!

I tried to eat here twice, but the place was fully booked. First time I've been here and I can recognize the food was awesome, the quantities a large and the price of the beers good. We had chicken fajitas which were very nice (highly recommended), tamales and chicken mole (this last one was Ok).
Service was good, they brought the food quite fast. I would recommend for small groups (preferable couples or 4 people) because the space is small, however, we did not feel uncomfortable.

First time Ive been here. Very good mexican food. We had Nachos, Steak Fajitas and Chicken Fajitas. Nachos were pretty good. Chicken in the fajitas was different flavour like kajun or something..was alright. I loved the amount of capsicum it came with and lots of sides for the fajitas. Left feeling stuffed and satisfied. Hard to compare with its competitor (flying fajita sistas) as they are both pretty good and they both have slightly different flavours which are both equally good in different ways.

We've been here a couple of times after finding a nearby competitor booked out. They take only bookings between 6-8pm (Out by 8) or groups of 6 or more.
We have found our new favourite Mexican, we have tried the steak fajita's which are so flavoursome and yummy. We have also tried the Chicken Enchirito which is delicious as well. All ingredients are so fresh and tasty and our meals came out so quickly which was great.
Our only criticism is that you have to pay for jalapenos if you would like them as well which seems a bit bizarre in a Mexican restaurant. The place is busy, noisy and you might have to wait but it's worth it.

Arrived at 6pm with 5 other people, we had made a reservation or so we had thought as my wife left a message on the answering machine. The waiter said there was no reservation under her name so after waiting about 20min they found a table for us. We ordered our mains Chicken Mole, Chicken Suiza and Fajitas to share. average at best, lacked flavour and one dish was actually cold so who knows how long it had been sitting in the kitchen before being served.
We ordered a jug of Baja red and white sangria, both were awful and I can't believe they would call this sangria, it tasted cheap and nasty with an acidic after taste. I had dined here about 6 months ago and we had a great experience but this time it was terrible. The table next to us was commenting that there was a new owner, if thats true then shame on them for making letting this place go downhill like they have. I won't return.

We went there because we are Mexicans and we read on weekendnotes it was one of the best Mexican restaurants, but we were very disappointend.
I believe the score was probably given by people from India, the food taste like Indian food nothing compare to Mexican food, I've eaten in many restaurants a cross Mexico and no one have does flavours. I'm not at all an indian food fan.
The service was good, we didn't have a booking and the lady said to us they were fully booked, so we leave, then she catches us out side and say someone just cancel please come in, It was really nice of her. But food wasn't what we expected.
Tortilla soup - cold and indian flavour, Tacos de carnitas=- - Indian flavour
Chicken enchilada - good flavour but to dry, Beans - average, Rice - indian flavour.

Tasty food, lively atmosphere, friendly staff and good sangria. What more could one ask for? Love the chicken mole and the chipotle prawns. Casual, fun place, ideal with a group of friends.

The restaurant was very busy on saturday and somehow we managed to get a table in the corner. Food is nothing special but mediocre. Not as expensive as Spanish Tapas, but not good value either.
