It was weirdly down at heel décor but lovely staff who were attentive, but not obtrusive and seemed knowledgeable about both the food and sake. I loved the grilled aubegrgine and miso, though wasn't sure why it was served with a bowl of edamame on the side, perhaps, it was a nod towards izakaya style food? My duck and burdock main was beautifully cooked and typically Japanese spiced, ie not spiced at all and though it's probably authentic, for my palate I would have liked some sort of sauce even if only for my plain rice.
The other starter, the seared tuna was light and tasty, quite small though. We enjoyed our meal and look forward to returning.
Anyone reading these reviews will surely be wondering whether Azuma deserves its SMH One Hat rating and the not too shabby price tag that accompanies it.
After having the 10 course degustation menu last night, my humble advice would be that Azuma is deserving of both its rating and the remuneration it attracts for its culinary services.
The 10 courses offered excellent variety, showcasing the various talents of the chefs. The size of each of the offerings was just right, stopping your stomach from rumbling over the first hour of the 2 hour degustation and leaving you pleasantly full after tottering away at the end of the night.
In terms of feedback on the specific dishes (a full list is on the Azuma webpage), the sushi and sashimi dishes were highlights, and the Amuse bouche was very nicely balanced. The udon was, perhaps, the least dazzling dish but tasty nonetheless.
The meals rated evenly with some of the better meals I have tasted in reputable eating institutions in Japan, and my Japanese offsider was suitably impressed. The waitstaff were attentive, polite, and splendidly bilingual. If fault were to be picked with the restaurant one could only, perhaps, point snobbily at the age-worn carpet near the door or raise their nose at the 'limited' 10 page wine list.
Overall, I recommend Azuma highly for somewhat traditional Japanese cuisine. Don't go there expecting mind blowing fusion or innovation, but a well rounded and satisfying meal.
We had a lovely anniversary dinner here last night. The food was great, we had melt-in-the mouth sushi and a tasty duck special. The service was attentive and friendly and the overall experience was perfect. I'd warned them that it was our anniversary prior to coming and they had left a note on the table and with dessert gave us a sparkler and a message on a wafer. Borderline tacky but still a very memorable and special night for us.
My friend and I dined here for dinner on a weekday. The service, as always, is very good and attentive. It is expensive for japanese, but then again, your dining in a restaurant, not a izakaya. The sashimi justed melted in our mouths and the eggplant with miso was memorable!
I wish we had ordered the specialty deep fried whiting without the braised vegetables, more crispy bits! Only disappointment was a dish chosen from the daily specials, smoked eel sushi with pickled ginger and cucumber. Couldn't taste the eel. But, going to Azuma is always a treat!
Came with my partner to celebrate our anniversary. Service was excellent, very friendly and attentive. I ordered the degustation menu and couldn't believe the serving size as I had expected very small portions. My partner orders 2 dishes, and together this was more than enough for us both. Some unique dishes in the degustation menu, well presented and tasteful. Definitely will come back.
We dine here once every year or so for special occasions, and I've never been disappointed. The food is second-to-none and the service is impeccable. The whole experience is amazing, and yes, it is pricey but it is so worth it.
We were warmly welcomed by all the staff when we arrived, but once seated, we weren't able to get their attention even though the place was almost empty. All ten of them were busy chatting amongst themselves and it took a couple of minutes of waving and coughing to get their attention. The food was hit and miss. The sashimi was ok, but no better than a cheaper restaurant’s. The sliced wagyu beef was tender, but dry. It was nicely presented wrapped around sprouts and the citrus soy was tasty.
The duck breast was nicely under-done and beautifully presented, but the “seafood tempura” was stingy for a main. It consisted of two skinny prawns and two small bits of fish. The rest was just vegetables. There was also no garnish which made this dish look naked compared to the others.
Once the restaurant got busier, we still couldn't get their attention even when they were walking past. Each time we managed to get service, they seemed surprised that we should want something. I guess they knew that we weren't food critics from the SMH. Save your money and go elsewhere.
Traditional, refined Japanese cuisine. Well presented and well executed food with excellent service. No longer BYO but allowed us to drink the wine we brought as we were unaware of the change. Decent value at about $60/head. Will be back.
This is a very popular restaurant for business lunches. They do have a few of their own private function rooms for the more intimate occasions. However, parking is always a problem in this area.
We had the 8 course degustation menu for lunch and it was superb leaving your palate wanting for more. Admittedly we thought that it would not fill us up as the first two courses were pretty small but came the 6th course onwards, we were struggling to keep the food down. The sashimi tasted very fresh, no hint of fishy taste whatsoever. I was actually looking forward to some nice Japanese style dessert, however, we were served creme brulee, mango sorbet and chocolate mousse. Having said that, it was still very sinfully good.
