I've been to Azuma twice this year and I doubt it'll be the last! From start to finish, I can't find any fault in the entire experience. On both occasions, we went with the degustation menu and were not disappointed.
First off, I must mention the service. Efficient, courteous and delivered with personality! There wasn't a time when we felt rushed or pressured which is a blessing, given the nature of the 2 hour experience and the price tag! We also had one of our group arriving quite a while later and the staff managed to accommodate this very well, which doesn't usually happen!
The courses were individually, very well presented and the quality was brilliant. Loved every course and with the obvious freshness, presentation and at times, unique flavours, it definitely satisfied. We also had the deep fried flounder to share on our table and that was also a highlight of the evening. The extensive wine list is also quite impressive and not to be disregarded!
I didn't expect a Japanese restaurant in the heart of the CBD would deliver so well and I'm glad to be blown away. I'd strongly recommend this restaurant to any of those who are interested in a fine dining Japanese restaurant in the CBD. Thanks Azuma for maintaining your standard of service and making our experiences nothing short of fantastic!
We enjoyed our dining experience at Azuma. The quality of the food is fresh, the service was good and all the staff were very professional and courteous. We particularly enjoyed the grade 9 wagyu beef and tuna belly nigiri with salt and lime.
Initially we were very cautious since we recently had a very bad experience at another one of Sydney's japanese restaurant with awful service and food. But Azuma was definitely very different and worth coming back. Well done!
Been here a few times and besides the food being fantastic (seriously good!), it's the consistency of the food....not like most places which depend on which night you go with the food varying. Keep taking clients and they are happy!
I went past Azuma one day while exploring the CBD and picked up a modest take away menu. I then researched this place on eatability before finally deciding to give it a try.
We arrived pretty early (6.30pm) and so the place was still quiet. As the night went on and more customers arrived, the dinning room lit up with this magical atmosphere. Service was very professional. Having previously dined out in 5-star restaurants and hotels, we had quite high expectations. The staff was friendly, courteous and absolutely amazing! They anticipated everything (eg. we had only asked for our green tea to be refilled the first time, and it was continually done throughout the night without hesitation) and as for the menu, they knew the answer to just about all of our questions.
We decided to try their degustation menu. At $110 per person (10 small courses), we initially hesitated because of the price. After reading the rest of the menu, and having the waitress explain what the 10-courses was all about, we decided to go ahead with it. It ended up as one of the BEST meals I have ever had. Although the dishes were all small, by the end of the 10-courses, I was not only full, but completely satisfied.
The quality of the food blew me out of this world. The combination of flavours used in each dish compliments the freshness of the ingredients used. Each dish tickles your taste buds individually and is definitely a unique experience.
The ingredients (such as the oysters, salmon and tuna sashimi) were one of the freshest I have ever tasted. Any fresher and I'm sure they will still be alive. The presentation is just stunning. Don't just take my word for it, let’s just say we weren't the only table taking photos of our food as it came out.
I rated it 10 for food, 10 for ambience, 10 for service, and a 9 for Value. It’s the perfect place for a special occasion that wont disappoint, but perhaps a little too pricey (for the average person) to visit too often! I definitely recommend you to give it a try if you haven't been here. Now if only they included the price of our tea in that $110... lol :)
Traditional Japanese food were all good presentation and tasty! I enjoy to see and taste, and smell for the food! the price is little bit higher than other Japanese restaurant, however valuable!
We went for lunch and ordered a la carte. The produce was of a very high quality but, unfortunately, nearly everything we had was drowned out in a sea of very ordinary mayonnaise. Unexpectedly, the standout sushi were the eggplant and the mushroom.
Service was very pleasant if a little bit "lost in translation" eg only 1 miso, double orders of some sushi etc. Still, it's a good option when you're in this part of the town, be warned though does not compare in any way with the heights of Yoshhi.
I always knew Azuma existed but never actually bothered to visit the establishment. It was my wife’s birthday and she decided that she wanted to go to Azuma for her birthday.
I have heard many good things about Azuma and to my delight all these things came true. Firstly, the complimentary car parking at Chifley Tower is great for night diners (especially if you have the degustation menu which will go for at least 2.5-3 hours).
The service was excellent. The wait staff are never intimidating and go above and beyond in looking after you. All our dishes arrived promptly.
We went for the degustation menu which consisted of 10 courses. We chose this option so we could sample a variety of Azuma’s dishes. Each dish was exquisite and lovingly prepared. The first course consisted of potato jelly with a sweet miso dipping sauce and a fresh oyster with roe. The texture of the jelly was unique and combined with the sweet miso dipping sauce was a treat. The oyster was super fresh.
For the second course, we were presented with grilled saikyo silver cod fillet. The meat on the fish was cooked perfectly with the vegetables complementing the dish. The third and fourth courses, the tuna and salmon sashimi and Azuma’s unique sushi were on par to the sashimi (which melts in the mouth) and sushi I had at Tsukiji Fish Markets in Tokyo. I will come to Azuma just for their sashimi and sushi!
Moving onto the fifth and sixth courses, the Chawan-mushi (steamed savoury egg custard with Prawn, Scallop and Shiitake mushroom) was smack right on after the sushi and allowed the meal to flow flawlessly. The consistency of the egg custard was a treat and served the purpose in cleansing the palate for the second part of the meal. I am not much of a tempura fan, but the tempura, like the egg custard, was a fitting lead up to the main dish which was the premium wagyu sirloin steak, served with garlic soy sauce. We had the steak medium rare and the meat melts in the mouth with the garlic soy sauce complementing the flavours of the meat.
Seared tuna served with daikon and citrus soy sauce followed the climax of the main. The tuna again was super fresh with the daikon and soy showing abundant flavours with the delicate texture of the tuna. To finish off before the dessert, Udon Noodle was served. It was a satisfying dish. Although we were relatively full we still slurped all of the udon up.
The dessert consisted of raspberry sorbet, crème brulee and chocolate moose was a fitting end to the meal. I also got a green tea birthday cake made which was just divine. We only had a small piece (because we were quite full) and took it home to savor. The staff made the night special for both of us and was constantly wishing my wife a happy birthday. They turned down the lights when they brought the cake to us and wanted to sing happy birthday, which my wife being a little bit embarrassed told them that it was ok.
I had expectations for Azuma before I came, having seen the chef in action on SBS’ Food Safari program. All the expectations were met and I was very impressed with everything here. This restaurant is worth a visit if you believe that service is king and food prepared with the finest quality ingredients with love and care matters. The flavours and textures of each dish were amazing. There are many Japanese restaurants out there in Sydney these days, but not many are of this caliber hence the Chef's hat.
I will differently come back to try the al la carte menu. Thank you Azuma for making our night out special and memorable.
I went to Azuma for dinner last night. The first time I'd ever been. It was one of the best Japanese meals I have had in Sydney for a long time. The decor and service were excellent. We had only decided to go for dinner there that afternoon, but the staff were very accommodating in trying to find us a table.
On to the food. We started with hand rolls - spicy raw tuna and the soft shell crab. Excellent. The sashimi was so fresh and beautifully presented. We did have room for mains... we shared the famous flounder, teriyaki chicken and Japanese greens in a sesame/peanut sauce. Again all were excellent.
I left feeling completely content and satisfied, it was worth paying the premium price to satisfy my Japanese craving. We will be back again, for those times when the local foodhall sushi/sashimi just isn't enough.
Over priced both night and lunch. Especially lunch quality is extremely low.
Sushi set we had was extremely dried and hard. Looked like it had been left alone for a while. Very disappointed. Never going back for lunch for sure.
