Dinner for two tonight was a fairly pleasant affair. Good Northern Beaches Chinese is hard to find and this one also had a few different choices and interesting menu items to select from.
We had chilli and garlic sizzling steak which was tender and flavoursome, special fried rice - (normally I'd request soy sauce to accompany but this was indeed special and didn''t need any additions). Mushroom, asparagus and snow pea stir fry was also tasty, fresh and will ensure a repeat order! The only disappointing thing was that although it was a Friday evening and there are a fair amount of seafood dishes on the menu, (and the specials board listed "fresh green chilli prawns"), there was no fresh seafood on offer. We quizzed the waiter and it was all frozen - thawed, a bit misleading and not a very good effort when there are plenty of excellent seafood purveyors in the area.
Fresh orange and honeydew melon slices plus a fortune cookie were complimentary at the end of out meal, and the waiters were very attentive and chatty. We will be returning.
Avalon Chinese's menu, like many Sydney Chinese restaurants, crosses over many other countries. These days you can't just call them "Chinese". Everything from Vietnamese and Thai dishes, like the tom-yum soup, are on the menu. They even have tandoori chicken.
The staff are very welcoming to children who get their own menu which has dishes like hot chips, burgers, pizza, and vegemite or nutella sandwiches. I highly recommend the Stir-fried Walrus (very expensive but worth it) or the Anchovy Omelette with Cherry Mango puree, very unique. One anomaly my wife found was that the female toilets had a urinal!! Bizarre, but common in old buildings during the days of unisex toilets.
I really liked this place, the waiters were very friendly and welcoming, the seafood soup for 2 was delicious. I would definitely recommend the seafood buddha pot.
Great local Chinese restaurant. Worth a visit. Their Hot and Sour soup was perfect for a cold, windy day. Central heating for the soul. Service was magic and the cost reasonable. A definite re-visit is in order for me.
This is a fantastic local restaurant, I pity those who do not live nearby. The food is good, standard, westernised, Chinese fare but the welcome you get especially for children, makes it our favourite. An ideal place for a family celebration. Bring the kids, they will love it.
Maybe being a local gives me a biased opinion but the av chinese reasturant is the best ive eaten in,and the only place iv'e found that makes spicy shredded steak perfectly.
