We've dined here at least 30 times over the last 8 years, and although it's not fine-dining, the ambience makes up for any deficiencies with the food, which is unimaginative, and the service, which is erratic. The room is a whimsical Art-Deco mix of furniture and crockery, with very lovely views over the rooftops of Katoomba and towards Mt Solitary in the distance.
It is possible to reserve a table next to a window and watch the sunset on a summer night. The menu is fairly restricted, with some sauce-infested overdrive items. The desserts, however, are excellent and generous. Service is good on a quiet night, but when it's busy, they often forget you exist. The Avalon is a unique Mountainesque venue that is best visited on a week night or a week day for lunch.
This place is awesome, we were told we'd have a bit of a wait as we hadn't booked, waited for about an hour, but when the food came it was well worth the wait, steak was perfect and so was the duck. The staff were hilarious, full of fun despite being rushed off their feet. We paid under $90 for a fantastic meal (2 mains) and a very nice bottle of wine. I would recommend it to all (unless you're in a hurry!)
Loved the funky room, wish we'd been here during the day to see the view. Food was ok, I had the salmon, which was well cooked, but the potatoes it came with were completely inedible, way overcooked, very hard. My husband reported the the duck had a nice flavour but found the potatoes to be "sketchy". The banana tart was everything the previous reviewers promised it would be. The overall bill did seem a bit expensive, given the quality of the meal we had.
My partner and I had dinner here on our recent visit to the blue mountains. We had spring rolls for entree which were good, mains were so-so, took a little too long to come out and were on the small side for their price. Dessert was great, my husband loved the banana caramel tart, I had the chocolate pudding which was rich and delicious. Will definitely come back if I'm in the area.
What a disappointing experience. We ordered slow cooked lamb for the main for dinner but were told it had run out at lunchtime. Why didn’t they go and buy some more? So we then ordered the duck. What a tough and tasteless meal that was! Must have been defrosted and microwaved. The room was furnished with a collection of non matching old fashioned items. Wouldn’t go back especially at those prices for what we were given.
Four words - have the banana tart. Honestly one of the best desserts I've ever tasted with perfect smooth caramel, banana slices in thick cream and shaved chocolate, with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side to mellow the sweetness out.
Aside from the dessert, the food in this place is a bit here and there. No entree menu but most main dishes come in small and large sizes. Beware the small sizes are way bigger than your average entree, so err on the side of caution. Chicken spring rolls were great, but the small crumbed eggplant nearly capsized me - way too much for a starter. Mains: slow roasted lamb was tender, veal schnitzel was fine but perhaps a little overcrumbed.
The nicest part about this place is it feels like the clashing of multiple eras in a pretty art deco space, with quirky mismatched chinaware, clipped rose buds and candles on the tables, modern lights next to upturned lampshades. The result is warm and inviting, and feels like spending dinner at an eccentric aunty's place. The staff are a testament to that vibe, each with their own quirks.
All in all, a pleasant place to spend an evening. Like most restaurants we found in the mountains though, you need to eat relatively early in order not to be the last man standing at 9.30pm.
Lovely ambience and decor, the old cinema converted to bar/restaurant is an ideal way to spend a good evening dining drinking. The personal touches of styling add a unique charm without sacrificing the look and feel, and the result is on par with more expensively dressed establishments.
Food was superb and well priced, service was exactly as you need it. I will be back for the double bass and singer in the bar this weekend!
Avalon was very nice to eat at. Booked the day of our dinner and were able to obtain a window seat, which was nice but it was so dark you couldn't see anything anyway except for our reflection so don't think it would affect anyone's dining experience at the Avalon!
Had starters of the parmesan and herb bread and the chicken spring rolls, which we especially liked. Both of our mains were very enjoyable, and I had the small size of the chicken which was plenty to eat for a main. Hence value for money and quality was very good.
However due to the volume of food we ate, we did not have room for dessert, admittedly there wasn't anything that jumped off the dessert list that made me want to change my mind about this, however I have seen the reviews commenting positively on the dessert so perhaps we missed out!
We really enjoyed the eclectic design of the Avalon, the service started out well however it was then difficult to obtain staff attention as the night wore on, again nothing to ruin the experience though. The time between serving entree and main was very quick, making the dinner a little rushed which was unfortunate.
Would definitely recommend the Avalon to others! Enjoy!
I love the Avalon, great food and the owner/decorater is very clever and inspiring!!! I just wish I could go there more than once every 6 months because they never change the menu (except for a couple of specials). I would definitely recommend to visitors though!!!
I've been to the Avalon many times and it remains one of our favourites for a special occasion. The food is reliably fantastic and the ambience wonderful, but the service can be a little slow at times. Still, this isn't nearly enough to keep us from going back considering that everything else makes it one of the best in the mountains. I even have friends who drive from Sydney just to go here for a meal!
