Food was ok, but nothing I could not have cooked just as well, if not better at home. In fact my husband had the pork knuckle and was so looking forward to it. It was a big lump of gristle and he couldn't eat 70% of it. Bitterballs may have been microwaved, that's what they tasted like anyway.
The waitress is pretty rude, huffed and puffed and rolled her eyes when I asked my husband which wine he would like to order. Young guy waiter is great. She should stay out the back and let him do his job. Pretty expensive for what it is. Disappointed.
The atmosphere was all it should be: gemutlich and authentic. Service was good. The beer was great. Alas some of the food was disappointing. The schnitzel tasted of over-used frying oil and the pastry on the strudel had gone soggy. However, the mixed fried meat dish with noodles was fine, and the knodel soup reminded dad of his mother's cooking.
My partner and I went last week and had smoked ham with potato salad entree and the bitterballs, both entrees being nice and for the main we shared the meal for 2 with pork schnitzel, beef and chicken and it had home made noodles which were not so great but the rest of the meal was lovely. Then for dessert we had the homemade pear strudel which was quite nice and a black forest cake which was not the best, tasted like had been in fridge for a day or 2.
The service is decent and you don't have to wait long for your food, I probably wouldn't go back but I did have a good night. We paid $101.00 for everything including 2 soft drinks.
We had read the reviews both good and bad. My husband made a booking @ 6:30 last Friday night. After first finding an appropriate parking for my husbands oversized vehicle (no mean feat), we stepped out of the car to some mouth-watering smells permeating from the restaurant.
We were met by a friendly and professional waitress who took us straight to our table. Menu's in hand we ordered beverages which came in time to take our order. Bitterballs followed by the Farmers Platter for two. I probably would not order the Bitterballs again (nothing to write home about), but they were delivered to our table promptly none-the-less.
Just enough time to finish our entree and take the last sip of my Mojito, the main arrived in all its glory. An oversized plate filled with meats, potato salad & sauerkraut. The Roast Pork melted in my mouth. The frankfurts were memorable & my husband loved the Pork knuckle.
I was struggling, but decided to order dessert anyway. I had the Crepes with ice-cream and Chocolate sauce which was lovely, a nice finish to the meal. The Chocolate Sauce was just that, no cheap "topping" rubbish.
A great value meal too, we ordered entree, main, two desserts, 1 cocktail, 1 schooler of beer and 2 pints totalled $108.
We had the farmers platter and smoked pork loin. Both very generous serving size and quite nice. Service was prompt and unintrusive and the decor is appropriate. Easy to find parking too. All in all quite a good meal.
I was pleasantly surprised. We went on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was busy, but not hectic. Service was attentive and we did not have to wait long at all. We had not been there for awhile and I had remembered prices to be much more expensive. The food is authentic and excellent value, especially compared to some other places closer to the city.
All of you nay-sayers should give this place another go, it's Brilliant! We've been to this place quite a few times over the last few years and each and every time it has been more than satisfying in every aspect. The food is abundant, satisfying and well priced for a night out, it's not "cheap eats" but you also don't have to mortgage the house to eat there.
The staff are quite lovely, nothing over the top, but certainly not as bad as some of the reviewers have noted. The waitress that served us on Saturday night (we just had to go because, quite simply, I just had to have the pork knuckle and saurkraut!) was friendly and very helpful. In fact, 3 out of the 4 staff that were there (we had an early seating, so less staff on) were the same faces we've been seeing there for the last few years and she remembered us from when we'd been there months earlier!
Don't expect super speedy service if all you've ordered is a main (entrees arrive pretty quickly though), they're always busy so be prepared to wait a little longer for the succulent morsels on offer. But you also aren't forgotten by the staff while you wait, they do stop by the table to make sure all is well while you're waiting.
And now to the food, amazing! My husband calls it a "meat fest" but we temper it with the lovely salad platter selection that is a perfect accompaniment to the Farmers Platter, or any of the meat platter selections on offer. If you're a first time visitor, I highly recommend trying the platters until you get to know the individual meals and what's on offer.
The platters present with a brilliant array of tasty treats, cooked to perfection, and absolutely everything is "melt in the mouth" tender! I actually closed my eyes and sighed with satisfaction on the very first mouthful! I wouldn't recommend this place to a vegetarian (!!) but if you're after extremely generous serving of well cooked, well prepared, home style food that would satisfy even the biggest hunger, then you can't go past ths wonderful restaurant!
After several visits here, I can honestly say that all of them have been satisfying and memorable. The food is consistently good, service usually good and the ambience is genuine. Proper Austrian/German cooking at a reasonable price. Definitely worth a visit.
My mates girlfriend came out from Germany over this last summer so we spent alot of time at the Barvarian Bier Cafe in Parramatta which serves good food. However, we thought we'd change the scene and we would try this Austrian place.
From the moment we walked in, we were charmed by the venue as well as the staff. I do not understand why others having given this place bad service reviews, unless they like in-your-face type of service. I found the staff accommodating and friendly, but at same time, letting you enjoy your meal without constantly visiting your table.
They offer little colouring activities for children which makes the place family friendly. But at the same time does not have little brat children screaming and running around. The food was fantastic. I highly recommend sharing the farmers platter. Pork knuckle was deliciously succulent and the meat fell straight off the bone. I had never had roast pork so tender and juicy. It is great value for money considering the amount of variety and food you get. I sampled some of my wife's schnitzel which was also fantastic.
The cheese and cherry Strudel was absolute heaven and has replaced the Tiramisu as my favourite dessert. If my mate didn't drink the place dry in schnapps, the bill would have been reasonable.
Most importantly, my mates German girlfriend has enjoyed this restaurant more than any other since she has been in Australia and says this place is as good as any place back home in Germany. I would highly recommend this place to anyone for any occasion, but make sure you get one of the platters to sample a bit of everything! (I do think that the Schnitzel challenge is a little over the top compared to the Barvarian Bier Cafe!)
Far less fancy than other German restaurants in Sydney, but much less expensive as a result. More of a family-type restaurant than a high-class beer cafe.
The food is top-notch, again not as elaborate, but beautifully cooked and served. The schnitzel is exceptional, possibly the best you'll get in Sydney. Drinks are almost bottle-shop prices, with a very nice selection. Really great value, first time we ate there I had to check the bill closely, as I genuinely thought we'd been undercharged about $20-30.
Haven't had any of the problems with service others have mentioned. My partner and I have been going quite regularly for about the last year, and the staff has always been friendly and efficient, if, perhaps, a little on the rushed side, and not the fawning, grovelling types some might be accustomed to in other restaurants.
Very highly recommended, just be warned that the car park is tiny, and the restaurant tends to fill up quickly, so book ahead.
