The food was nice, but ultimately the hideous overpricing for the reward of utterly abysmal service was too much to stomach. We left unhappy, never return again.
The food is fabulous. The portions are huge and full of flavour. I had my favourite dish fettucini boscaiola and it was so good. The garlic bread is also delicious with the way it's prepared being unique from any other restaurant, I have ever been to. I highly recommend eating here!!
We were a table of 13 and the service was exemplary; couldn't be faulted. It’s been two years since I organised to come here last and the quality of food is as good as ever. The servings are enormous. I ordered what you might call the seafood platter in a stew as a main. Lots of crab, mussels, and prawns in a tomato based soup. Not something to order if you didn't want to get your hands dirty. I believe the barramundi and the cannelloni were quite good as well.
Unlike most Italian restaurants they didn't have a great choice of gelato flavours but what they had was nice. The restaurant fills up quite quick on a Saturday night so you would need to book.
Went here tonight with four of us and we had a good time, except for the poor service. There were only two waitresses around and they forgot to take our order after we waved them three times. Later on, they took our empty water bottle but forgot to refill it and return to us, until we had to request to get it back. If they had more staff around, the franticness and rushing around would surely have been prevented.
Apart from the service, the food was good, above average, but nothing too special - typical Italian style cooking here with a touch of cafe-ness to it as I was surprised to see steaks being offered here. But the servings are quite large, and we couldn't save room for dessert.
We started off with the garlic bread and bruschetta, the beef carpaccio which was very sour, and a mixed dozen of oysters. I had the fish of the day, which was an Atlantic salmon and the serving was huge! I could hardly believe my eyes when I received it - by the time I finished, I was quite stuffed. The others ordered the seafood risotto was which was great, and the linguini prawns was very creamy but delicious and Penne Gamberi which had good ratings amongst us.
At Fernando's offers you great tasting pastas, without the inflated cost. The $45 off the bill with the entertainment book is an added bonus for certain, making this one of the best value meals I've had. The decor has a nice, warm touch to it and despite the bad service, the place certainly scores well.
I had the Spaghetti Marinara for the main meal. It was lovely, lots of chili as well as seafood which was warming on a cold night. Their special salad had a mix of lettuce, fetta, avocado and olives, plus other ingredients and it was yummy too. Great place!
My friends and I had the best time ever!!! I booked for 7 of us (for a birthday dinner) and we had such a wonderful experience. Upon arrival, my jacket was taken and I was seated immediately. The service was quite impressive and I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful throughout the night.
Unfortunately (and at no fault of At Fernandos) the whole of Norton Street had a black out (for about an hour) yet this did not tarnish our night in anyway. We were advised immediately of what had happened, and received several candles for our table, which actually gave the night a nice intimate feel, as it felt like we were having a candlelight dinner. We were also advised that our food would still be coming, which it did in a matter of no time (don’t ask me how they do it???) and we were all very satisfied with both the quality and portion size provided.
After our meals, we opted to sit outside for our desserts and coffees - in which Fernando himself came out and had a chat with us. Since it was towards the end of the night and most customers had left, we offered for Fernando to sit down with us to help unwind – in which he did. Fernando then started telling us some hilarious stories and kept us well entertained, to see the night out.
I honestly can’t remember the last time I’d laughed so much!!! He also arranged to surprise the birthday girl and brought out a slice of cake with a sparkler on top –which was very thoughtful and kind. My friends and I ended having such a great night. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants some good hearty Italian food at a reasonable price, with excellent service and atmosphere all round. Thanks guys – we’ll definitely be making a return visit, and Fernando – from all of us, we just want to say “Salute”
We went to Fernando's on a Wednesday night and were very disappointed. There were 3 of us dining, no one else in the restuarant but we still didn't get attentive service. The food was very average, not inspiring at all. The waitress appeared uninterested in doing her job, and one of the kitchen staff sat at the back of the restaurant on his phone, swearing at the top of his voice, we had to ask the waitress to ask him to stop so we could try to enjoy our meal, he did come and say sorry, however, we won't bother to go back, I really don't want to pay for average food, a dull setting and uninterested/rude staff!
Party of 4 dined on a Monday night. When we arrived at 7pm we were efficiently seated in the half full restaurant. Menus and drinks quickly followed. We ordered Chicken Bosciola, Veal Parmigian and 2 x Penne Gamberi (Penne, prawns & crab with chilli in a Napolitana & cream sauce -Yum!). Food was excellent. Servings generous all round.
Décor of the restaurant is pretty drab. Nothing about it makes you say "this looks & feels like an Italian restaurant." The big screen TV is an odd feature for a restaurant.
Like previous reviewers I found that the staff was quick to sit us down and present our food, and then they forgot about us. There seemed to be lots of staff around, but no one actually interested in helping us or taking our money to pay the bill. 1 of the waitresses was actually sitting down having dinner in the restaurant during peak dinner service time leaving the other waitress to service the now full restaurant! No one seemed to be in charge or to be managing the staff.
After waiting 20 minutes for the bill we ended up going to the counter and paying ourselves out of sheer frustration.
Cost of dinner and drinks was $120 which was good value for the quality of the food but bad value for the service. I would probably not go back as Norton St is full of Italian restaurants where the food is also great but I am sure that the service is better!
Five of us dined here on a freezing cold night and, seated in the back section we all shivered through the evening. Funny, how, despite the cold winters, few Sydney restaurants bother to provide decent heating.
Perhaps, because it was a weeknight, and an icy one at that, but the atmosphere was a tad dreary on account of there being very few other diners. Still, the interior is pleasantly decked out in that ordinary Italian sort of way. If you happen to face the bar, you'll enjoy entertainment on a giant-sized TV screen (personally, I find these ubiquitous TV's in restaurants an intrusion and a nuisance).
Again, and this might have had something to do with the fact that the place was pretty empty, but service was fine. All meals went down well, although portions could have been a bit bigger. My lemon veal with vegetables was delicious. Prices are reasonable and you'll get probably the best Entertainment Book deal here with 25% off the bill up to maximum of $45. That kept our cost to $135 including drinks and coffees. Overall, worth a visit with your voucher.
You'll find "At Fernandos" in the heart of Leichhardt's "Little Italy" dining strip near the corner of Norton and Marion Streets. Parking can be a pain, and it's not helped by the wall-to-wall timing restrictions. We drove down Marion St and found a 2P section in a nearby side street. Being such a night, we didn't think there'd be too many parking police around to see if we overstayed our welcome and we were right.
Went here for my husband's birthday after reading great reviews. Very disappointing, I found the menu to be uninspiring. We had prawn cutlets and stuffed squid for entree. My cutlets were ok but could of been frozen and the squid was inedible. I had veal parmigianna for main and my husband had steak. My veal was lovely (can't really go wrong with parma) but my husband's steak, which was ordered medium-rare, was so overcooked. Service was very poor - our plates were still on our table after we paid for our bill and left the restaurant. Wouldn't go back here again.
