Great place - aptly named, food rivals spice I am which will surprise some. Service can be overrun but the pace of the kitchen is furious. The serve size is actually a problem because the dishes are so big you only get to share two between two people! I kind a wish they had a few more salads but noodles are their specialty. The only real problem is the backless chairs never a good thing even for a fast lunch.
Bangkok is one of those restaurants where you walk past all the time but never actually eat at. After our friend recommended it we made it our destination. It was quite busy and looking at the other diners the crowd was a mix between Chinese, Thai.
One thing you notice is the space. Or should I say lack of it. We could hardly get our legs under the table and our night consisted of constantly shifting and juggling dishes to fit on our tiny table.
The food was pretty good. We had the whole snapper with namjim and crispy toppings which was really good. All you farang out there would disagree with this dish as they serve it asian style - bones, head and tail. Asians will only usually eat seafood if they can see it looking back at them. Nice.
The other dishes were surpisingly good also. The menu can be described as southern Thai with a modern twist. Flavours were clean and well rounded. Crispy, salty, sour and hot. A little too sweet for most Thais.
The wine selection was ordinary but OK. Bangkok is good for a decent night out and has a different vibe to most of the other Thai restaurants in the city.
I was modifield when the alive moving worm (2cm) in my bowl of noodle soup. When we went to pay for the bill, the manager was not apologetic and simply just said "I will not charge you for that dish as you didn’t eat it". I was chocked as I had no intention to eat the worm alive.
I eat lunch here regularly and I consider this to be one of the better Thai cafe's around. The food is fresh and tasty, not too spicy but enough to know you are eating quality Thai food. The noodle soups are authentic and full of flavour. Even the basic spicy fried rice is full of fresh stir fried veg. for a quick 10 - 15 bucks lunch, you can't go wrong.
I agree with the reason that Chat Thai Restaurant is always busy. Likewise, At Bangkok is very busy, too, but I don't feel stifled whenever I've my meals there. I've been there so many times although sometime, I've had to wait for a vacant table. Their service wasn't bad; serving with a smile from lovely and friendly waitresses, nice and authentic spicy menus and good location.
I love their various salad dishes, curries and fried rice. Last week, I tried the big bowl of noodle soup which was really tasty for my lunch. There're enough fast/junk food seats out there on George St. if you're in a hurry. At Bangkok is very nice. Extremely recommended.
Came here as Chat thai was too busy. Didn't expect much but found it to be average. Service was poor and while it is expected to experience some communications issues when visiting an asian eatery this was exceptionally bad. We were also rushed to leave and our plates were taken away even though we had not quite finished our meals. The food was decent. Not bad but not good either. While it is fairly cheap there are many better Thai eateries to be enjoyed. Wouldn't go back in a hurry.
