Asuka offers a slightly utilitarian dining experience on a shoestring budget. The overall quality of their 'izakaya' style dishes is quite good, including their sashimi, but they also do little homely dishes like warm peeled 'sato imo' (native potato), crab cream mashed potato croquettes and grilled sanma (Pacific Sauri) very well.
Their okonomiyaki and yakisoba are not really as good as your mother (if she is Japanese) would make, but this is really a place for quick dining, downing of glass mugs of their very fine draught Sapporo, sake and other liquors, and hot-tailing it out into the night to make way for the next customers.
The staff are always young, energetic, run off their feet, friendly and efficient. One minor quibble is the passageway to the loos: it is packed with boxes and other stored items.
Other than that though, Asuka is thoroughly recommended for a quick and satisfying fill of Japanese drinking establishment side dishes while you drink.
The food was great for price and service was also good. I think the seafood wasn't very fresh when I went there but the entree' was nice. I think I would return here in near future.
Very lovely Japanese restaurant, reasonable prices, very friendly staff. Seafood dish that I ordered was unbelievably tasty. Too bad that I can't visit Sydney everyday because in Melbourne we definitely don`t have Japanese food as good as at Asuka.
Coming in just before the lunch rush, seated, anticipated, and finally enjoyed simply the best Japanese in Sydney, if not Australia. The service was a typical example of a true Japanese restaurant 'a la Japon.'
The food was better than some food I had when I was in Japan! Also the price for lunch or dinner won't harm the bank balance in the least. I recommend this restaurant to people who are studying Japanese since the welcoming staff speak both English and Japanese and will take your order in either. Friendly staff and great food make for an even better night.
This place is amazing. They don't take bookings during lunchtime, don't need to. People queue up to eat here and others phone ahead for takeaway. Great noodles and my favourite Chicken katsudon. YUM!! They could get away with charging a few dollars more considering the location (takeaway is even cheaper!). Highly recommended.
If there is one place my partner and I go back to and never get disappointed its Asuka, there is a real authentic cosy atmosphere. We have been going here for at least four years now and while you do notice the change of chefs, as the dishes have become smaller over the years, we still highly recommend this gem find.
Always busy so be prepared to wait for a table or for your takeaway. If you are getting takeaway, I suggest you use their phone in service that way you don't have to wait around too long. Service is painfully slow (very little English spoken), but the staff are all very polite, friendly and helpful. Food is always very good.
It's an interesting experience and worth it in the end.
If you want a truly Japanese experience then visit Asuka! I lived in Japan for 4 months, and this food is authentic and delicous. The waitresses only speak a little English so be kind and understanding. This is the best value Japanese restaurant between here and Osaka.
