Overview
Astral Restaurant is located on the summit of the hotel tower on level 17 with panoramic views of Sydney
Harbour, the city skyline and Pyrmont bay. Enjoy the finest of international cuisine amidst elegant surrounds, complete with the luxury of silver service.
What a place, what a night! Although I had to part with my hard earned cash, take that special person for that special occasion. The facts: Book early and you can request a window seat, just a beautiful view which you cannot beat. Much to the delight of my partner we experienced the seafood degustation with matching wines (food $240pp, wine $100pp), the well crafted courses literally melt in your mouth and the wines match exquisitely.
The whole place just oozes with class, no pretentious people here which is a bonus!
The courses are well paced, you will be there for quite a few hours, but the time does fly. Between courses stretch you legs and enjoy your wine out on the terrace balcony whilst taking in the amazing view of the harbour. Yes it is expensive but for the overall experience it was worth it. I will return in a few years time.
Service was the best I have ever experienced. I appreciate waiters with class and a friendly smile, your wish is there command. If you’re feeling chatty ask them questions about the food and wine, extra nice when they top up your glass too. My advice, just do it, you only live once!
p.s. If anyone has experienced the $1000pp degustation please post.
Went to dinner tonight with friends after hearing good things about this restaurant.
The food was very sporadic. Service was very cold, though professional and was also very pricey for what you get. The view over Sydney was brilliant. We started our experience with a bottle of French White which was average for $100 a bottle.
Not much variety, considering that we had no choice but to order the 7 course 'Degustation'.
The first 4 courses that came out were cold dishes. The first dish was a foam dish which was pretty tasteless, though the Spanner crab dish was nice. The rest was quite average. My main was the Angus Beef which was cooked perfect, though there was a hair in my dish (I suppose it does happen).
There was a pre-dessert dish, which was pretty pointless then came the dessert that was a mixed berry dish. It was pretty good. The service from the pretty blonde lady, the Indian man felt really cold.
All in all, I just didn't think that $694 for 4 people was worth the money. There was 20% off the bill, I would say because of the the hair in the food.
My husband (meat and 3 vege type of guy) took me to the Astral for dinner to celebrate my birthday and for surviving the 2 kids for another year. We arrived early so went to the Astral Bar for a drink before dinner. Pricey drinks for a couple from the 'burbs but such a gorgeous view (best in Sydney), a fantastic band (was he channeling Ray Charles?) and service staff friendly and very sophisticated without making us feel like fish out of water. Bellini delicious and beer icy cold. A wonderful start to the night.
Time for dinner. Wait staff were fabulous, not snobby like some even a few mid-range restaurants. Made us feel welcome and didn't talk to us like intruders!
Food was divine, spectacular even, and well explained. Any questions we had were answered and we never felt like we were asking a silly question. We had the degustation without wine, however, I asked our waiter to recommend a wine to have with my meal and it was truly beautiful.
Couldn't tell you what it was but it had a bouquet of green apples that I have never experienced before which complemented my meal exquisitely! The table next to us were celebrating a 50th birthday and the service to the table of 12 was also first rate. Beautiful decor, comfortable seating, stunning view. Thank you Astral for a wonderful birthday!
My husband and I enjoyed an early morning breakfast here. It is by far one of the best brekkies I have had (and I have had a lot of 5* hotel breakfasts), in that the fruit is exceptional and different. I had several varieties of fruit that I had not had before. The view was fantastic and the service impeccable.
Went here recently for our anniversary dinner. Although we dine out almost every weekend, this was by fact by far the best dining experience we've had. It is quite a posh restaurant and the waiters were professional but far from the usual snobs you would expect at such a fancy place. The food was absolutely delicious and great value.
The only downside would be the fact that we were charged per glass for water top ups and it was only ever 1/2 to 1/4 filled and we were not told, we were getting charged till we got the bill! Apart from that 10/10.
I have enjoyed both the al la carte menu and tasting set at Astral and have to say that I much preferred the tasting set on offer. The dishes are thoughtfully planned and take you on a whirlwind tour with a wonderful explosion of flavours. I recommend the tasting set and matching wines and hope you have an enjoyable evening.
A good place for pre-theatre dinner, Astral has great views if you can sit in the north-east area of the restaurant. The food is tasty and the wine list interesting and ever changing. Staff have always been very attentive and efficient, although I suspect they have the pre-theatre routine down pat, and get people in and out reasonably quickly and smoothly. The decor is generally pleasant and although the lighting needs a re-think, the restaurant overall is to be recommended.
To celebrate special events, Astral is where I head to. It's best to have a drink at the Astral bar beforehand and relax taking in the vibe of the jazzy live music. The restaurant itself is fantastic and you really feel like you are somewhere quite special. Personally, I like the fact the waiting-staff explain every detail of the meal right down to which part of the world the salt comes from as it gives a welcome change to more traditional restaurants.
The food is always perfect and I like the little unexpected extras you can nibble on between courses. This is definitely one of the nicest places in the city to take your partner / client / visitors-to-Sydney for a special occasion. Perfect.
I came here with a party of 10 for my birthday, we were seated adjacent to the kitchen. We did not enjoy the hustle and bustle near the kitchen.
In regards to their water, they went crazy with refilling our glasses. Since it was our first time there we assumed it was regular tap water, however, when it came to paying the bill we'd been charged 8 bottles of water. They had never mentioned to us that we would be charged for the water, nor did they ask if we would like some.
Love the view of it! Food was great. I like their Angus steak cooked with a bit of an Asian touch. The white chocolate wafer was brillant! The value of food was rated lower as the meal really costed a lot. Overall, it deserves to have one hat this year!
