I went with a friend mid week and had the degustation menu, which was overall excellent. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food and overall offers great value. The room lacks a bit of atmosphere and the chairs are very bistro like for a fine diner, but I guess things like that are reflected by the lower prices.
This must be the cheapest upmarket food in town. I found the service whilst attentive was a bit cold, the staff didn't look too happy. Maybe a bit of cheery smiling might warm the atmosphere up a bit. Overall, a great place to go if you want fine food at lower than average prices, but not a place to go and fill up if you are hungry.
This restaurant definitely deserves its chefs hat. For a relatively small restaurant with quite reasonable prices you get more than you pay for here. The food is not just standard fare, the chef obviously goes to a lot of effort in the design and preparation of the menu - and every mouthful was exquisite.
It's not the type of place you go to fill up on steak and potato and leave 1/2 your veges on the plate - you need to savour the flavours and appreciate the meal as a whole. We had 3 courses each and were both really full at the end, even though the entrees didn't look that large. Nice wine list, very friendly relaxed waiters who were attentive (although we were there quite early). We were pleased to get a French waiter which added to the experience.
The ambience is ok, I think it would best suit small groups of 2-4, it felt quite intimate and private, even though it's small. The only complaint I could make is that the toilets are not that nice, and the soap didn't work in the ladies. Our new favourite restaurant.
Friends and I lunched here last Friday, a cold, windy, rainy day to trek from the burbs to Surry Hills and it was so very worth it! We all had the degustation, and initially thought that we may have gone hungry, but the portions gradually upsized during the meal. Most of the dishes were amazing, the staff were very pleasant and helpful and we are still talking about the day.
The only dish we feel did not live up to standards already set was the cheese course, it could have been any cheddar. We are already planning a return trip soon!
My friends and I got the degustation and although the food was absolutely beautiful, we were all left feeling hungry afterwards (and us girls are by no means big eaters). The servings were tiny. We have all had degustations before so we know what to expect but this was ridiculous. Don't think we will be going back.
First visit - friday night. Everything was perfect, fantastic food, ingredients respected, dishes composed perfectly. I started with the scallops which were sensational and then got food envy, and my boyfriend's duck it was heavenly, amazing, beautiful, order it!
Then we moved onto mains of veal (for him) chicken for me - slowly cooked in truffle oil, accompanied with mushroom tapenade, mushroom cream foam and various other small tasty things! it was delicious, the chicken melted in the mouth with the mushrooms balancing with robust meatiness perfectly.
Even though full we couldn't ignore the puds and shared a delightful chocolate fondant (it did take a while to come but was worth it), various amuse bouche in between, some great glasses of wine (and really really good wine knowledge from the team). With fabulous company it was a perfect night out. Well worth the money.
Enjoyed the 10 course degustation last night. The progression of the menu was put together with the care of a scientist - each dish contained a signature of the previous which made the journey through this fusion food all the more enjoyable.
Standout dish was the crispy skin barramundi matched with a surprising pinot noir from the mornington peninsula. Most interesting was the scrambled eggs with truffles, asparagus and parmesan foam. I thought the presentation was fussy but perfect. Portions were tiny and exact. I was concerned we would leave hungry but I couldn't have eaten another bite.
Service was a somewhat bewildering procession of every waiter in the house. Some gave tasting notes about the food and matched wine, others just placed it down. Overall service was knowledgeable but impersonal.
Ambience is definitely lacking in intimacy, it's too well lit and the white walls are cold. The seats are also uncomfortable which is a real downer when you settle in for a 10 course meal! I felt the acoustics were loud too which made the waiters hard to hear. I was really impressed by Assiette, the food is just fascinating. Definitely worth a visit... and a re-visit.
We went again for the Friday lunch special (I'm beginning to worry we're cheapskates). Truly it's such an incredible deal that it's a crime the place had empty tables. Such well executed food and top quality ingredients. The chef has a very fine touch.
The service has relaxed a little since our last visit (in a good way). They're doing everything right and looking in on a Friday night when it was completely full and buzzy I hope this means they're doing alright.
I have been wanting to try this restaurant for so long, I finally got the chance last Friday night with a small group of friends. While the food was tasty, the portions were very small. I expected this with the entrees from previous reviews but was hoping for a bigger serving of mains.
Overall it was a nice night with great service from the staff and with the EB card, it seemed good value for money.
Last night we celebrated my girlfirends birthday here. The food and service were fantastic with the courses for the degustation menu I thought, perfectly balanced. Agree with the comment that the room is lacking a little something, i.e they need to create some ambience however, all round it was a fantastic night! (They even remebered that it was my girlfirends b'day and brought out the last course with a candle on it - nice).
