Waitress was not very helpful and looked annoyed all the time. We waited for about an hour between the entree and main. When we inquired about this, was given a "hard stare" back and told that "it's coming!".
Then the beef teppanyaki was literally burnt; as in black on the bottom. On inquiry, the waitress said "this is teppanyaki!!". Fortunately the head chef overheard and recooked us another dish. The portions were definitely smaller than before. Very disappointed experience, having been a frequent here through the old management. Won't be going there again.
Unfortunately the food quality has declined a little bit over the years. It used to be worst at Glen Waverley when the management had a different Japanese shop there, then it improved a bit in its current location.
The best time was when Henry was the Sushi Chef there, as he is certainly one of the best sushi chefs in Melbourne and very pedantic. Complimented the hot food.
Nowadays it leaves a lot to be desired.
This place serves up fine quality food for reasonable dosh. Average sushi is lifted up by refreshingly unique cucumber and salmon skin roll and other food are also of moderately good standard. Service is average.
Updated: been there again, was curious to try out their jyo-sushi but the middle aged woman waitress declines to tell me what fish will be in it, instead saying that I should "trust the chef as he will pick the best of the day". Result was a very, very average sushi. Fish nothing to shout about and the tuna nigiri in particular was terrible! Another thing that surprised me was how, instead of having gunkan maki of ikura and flying fish roe, they actually mixed the two up and made one gunkan maki of mixed raw fish eggs. I feel that the chef is trying to cheap it out! Food portion feels smaller than before too. Overall, pretty disappointing experience with the sushi which is ultimately not up to the scratch. Tempura was good though, as was the salmon skin roll.
I ate here last night and it was wonderful. We had the old reliable gyoza to begin followed by eggplant topped with chicken mince sauce that was out of this world. Mains was great with sizzling beef and Japanese sauce and although it was a little sizzless it was hot and tasted delicious.
The best thing was something I hadn't tried before and that was the flounder which has the flesh removed and fried and the remaining whole fish is fried also and served and you can eat it bones and all (and the head if feeling adventurous), for want of a more exotic explanation it was kinda like chips and served with a dipping sauce.
I think the bonus to this place is the friendly staff who are too happy to explain the menu and even give you a little background on the history and tradition of it. Oh, and the price was excellent. Can't wait to get back there. Such a big menu and so much to try.
