I went here hoping to get some good Japanese food and what I got was terrible. It would be disrespectful to consider what they serve as Japanese food. Yes, it's cheap, but you could go to any of the 300 restaurants right around it and eat better.
I only been there once and I swear I won't go there even if it is free. These are cheap fast food, but the food were awful. Maybe because the people who run the business are not Japanese. They are from China as I can understand what they were talking about.
Cheap - that's the best I can say. The Chinese inspired Japanese food results in a not quite Japanese meal. No dinner or box sets were meat free. Trying to replace something meat with something fish was impossible - not even politely refused. Just a chicken skewer for a salmon skewer was refused outright. Miso didn't come with any of the sets it had to be bought - unheard of in a Japanese restaurant. Sauces were watery and tasteless (stingy?) No ground radish with the tempura. Sigh. Very disappointing. A pity Hikaru was full!
We eat here all the time. I think its so good is due to being close to the Uni and being very reasonably priced. Its a bit no frills but always full. The waiters are a bit odd have to say, but maybe its bit cultural. We usually order the Sushi/Sashmi combo set, always fresh and nice. Sukiaki also good or Terikaki Beef Main, its massive! Highly recommend it.
I went here with my boss and a few other colleagues. My boss is from Japan and he tells me that this is the most authentic Japanese place in town. The service and ambience are not so great but if what matters is the taste then this is the place to be.
I am not good with exact names but there was this chicken curry I had there which was so spicy, hot and fresh from the kitchen that it reminded me of my mom's cooking. I have been craving it ever since.
I'm here every month and this place never lets me down. It's a good cheap eat with nice tasting food. Sure it isn't the best japanese place in the world but for $10 dinner sets that can fill you up, why complain? I always get the chicken curry for the mains and it is always delicious. The service is always attentive but the only time I've come with a large group, thats when they seem to fall apart with loosing orders and not bringing things out at the same time. All in all, I still come back every month.
The overall appearance of the restaurant is a bit shabby. We were served on chipped and cracked plates. The service was friendly and fast. The dishes we ordered (seaweed salad, yakitory, and sushimi) were all mediocre however, I think the oil used for the tempura was in need of a change and this made the vegetables a bit stodgy. The prices are reasonable but you really do get what you pay for.
Have not been to this restaurant for a few years but the quality of the food is still fantastic. Pricewise for Japanese food it is unbeatable. We had the gyoza and yakitori chicken skewers for entrees which I can highly recommend.
My friend had the teriyaki salmon for main and she was very happy with it although strangely it didn't come with rice. My main was the seafood noodle soup and I can recommend that as well. Will definitely be back.
I think some of the previous reviewers are expecting far too much for the price of this place. Of course you aren't going to get the lovely subtle harmonies of flavours and textures that japanese food is renowned for, for $8.50. But I certainly enjoyed what I got. They have the balance perfect, cheap prices, fast service, filling, flavourful food. It's not fancy, but it is good.
