We have been to this restaurant about six times now. It can be a little inconsistent, but it is generally the best Indian in the upper North Shore. My English husband has been looking for a more authentic Indian (with spice) for some years, and this is the closest we've found in our area.
Their strength is their starters, naans and dosai. All have been consistently good. The mains vary, but the staff are more than happy to help if you have a problem (though you need to ensure that you have a senior/experienced staff member!!).
We have always found the service quick to the point where it is sometimes too quick (not enough time between eating the entree and mains arriving). However, this could be because we go with our kids and normally have a booking for 6pm.
On the kid front, all of the tables have that thick white paper covering. Thus ensure that your children bring pens/textas for hangman, colouring in and drawing on the "table cloth". This is always great entertainment for us. But, there is not a kids menu per se, so don't expect zero spice options. We will be going back again.
Excellent food. This was the first time I have had a decent masala dosai on the North Shore. It was reasonably crisp and well flavoured. I particularly liked the sambar and the coconut chutney. They served these as an accompaniment to the dosai in a nice little khadai. I guess that I won't have to drive to Strathfield anymore to have decent masala dosais!
I also enjoyed their Cochin beef curry and the chicken briyani. In Kerala style, the biryani has a boiled egg on top. It was served in a khadai too. This was a welcome change from the boring dishes that many restaurants serve their food in. The beef curry was subtly flavoured and interesting. Their nans were large, soft and tasty.
It was a pleasant change from the fake Indian cuisine that is foisted on Australians at most "Indian restaurants". The waiters were pleasant and friendly but a little amateurish. The guy serving our table seems to be a hairdresser in real life who was shanghaied into helping his friends at their new venture.
The restaurant layout was a little unusual. It seems to have been converted from a small house and the dining areas are divided into multiple small rooms. The benefit of this is that you aren't stuck in a large warehouse like eating place. The bill was reasonable at $64 for two. I plan to take my teenage children next week.
Nice to have semi-authentic South Indian food on the North Shore of Sydney (for authentic South Indian food, you need to fork out a few thousand for a ticket to Cochin or Madras). Not sure how long they will last. Their location has been associated with a high restraint mortality rate. Three other food places have come and gone at that location in the last eighteen months. My inner pessimist would like to encourage you to go there quickly while they are still open.
Food was so so however the restaurant lacked space and was quite cramped. The service was absolutely abysmal, completely tardy and unacceptable. Ambience is a joke as it is not like a restaurant at all; it is a house. Overall, don't expect the food to be served in less than two hours. I shall not be returning to the restaurant.
If the food is not good, then there is no point to visit a restaurant. Forget about the ambience. Anapoorna is just terrible in terms of taste, but they still make good bucks. Please avoid this restaurant, if you can.
The 1st time we tried this restaurant was in March, 2007. The food was delicious and we were dying to return. We did dine in the restaurant one other time and the food was good but not like the 1st time we dined there. After a few takeaway meals from there I'm afraid to say we will not be returning. There is no consistency. The chicken tikka masala that my husband orders is now too spicy to eat, my kashmiri puloa is always different to the previous time I have ordered it and my vegetable korma smelled and tasted like rotten vegetables. It's a shame because I had such high hopes for this restaurant.
This is the worst restaurant that I have ever been to. Entrees smelt old, pakoras had been obviously re-fried, the papri chat was a mess and totally soggy. The mains were lukewarm and tasted the same. Meat curries (nilgiri chicken and lamb korma) were full of diced potato and lemon wedges (!!!) to give the dish bulk. Service was terrible. We had to wait for 15-20 minutes before anyone noted that we were done with our entrees.
The worst of all was the fact that the upstairs hallway was being used to stockpile used plates with waiters scraping off leftovers into a bin and clattering used cutlery three feet from where other patrons were seated. How can any restaurant worth its salt let back kitchen work are carried out where other patrons are seated and in open view is beyond me. Will never ever go back to this restaurant.
Annapoorna South Indian Restaurant is a small Indian restaurant tucked away from the central dining hub of Hornsby Mall. It is a pleasant, family oriented dining establishment with adequate off street parking (not an ideal location for out-of-towners who would drive by the restaurant without realising that one could park in a multitude of side streets).
The food is well priced and flavoursome, but not exceptional. The venue is warm and inviting, however, the décor is not entirely traditional Indian. Old deflated balloons were still hanging off the venetian blinds upstairs, what the? For a cold autumn Friday night, the venue was far from packed, which can make for a cosy dining experience (granted), or can suggest that the restaurant is far from popular…maybe it’s the service???? Read on….
The restaurant is split into several rooms across 2 levels. I suggest that you dine downstairs because the attention from wait staff upstairs was rather pathetic. Drink orders were forgotten, side orders with the main meal, forgotten and to grab the attention of the wait staff, mission impossible. Between 9 people we ordered 10 main dishes, rice, assortment of naan breads, mango lassis, had BYO wine, 3 entrees and the bill only came to a measly $228! Bargain!
Again, by sitting downstairs you are likely to have hot food when it is brought to your table! If you are looking for a budget night local Indian experience, this is the place for you.
We booked the front room upstairs for a birthday dinner with 22 people. Lamy was very helpful with the arrangements beforehand and no request was too difficult. The food and the service on the night were excellent - delicious dishes, served fresh and hot, with charm and attention. Outstanding value and we would certainly do this again at Annapoorna.
The best and most varied Indian food.......full flavoured and interesting with Goan influence. Been eating there regularly for about two years and the food just keeps getting better!!
