Anise is a reasonable place. The staff (especially the owners) are helpful, friendly and accommodating. The food is nice with satisfactory portions for the price. The coffee is hot, strong and consistent - the way I like it.
I love the coffee here!!! And it comes with fantastic service. After only a couple of times ordering my morning coffee the waitress knew my order, I love that personal experience. The staff are always friendly which helps to create a great atmosphere. Food is always fresh and yummy! I won't be going anywhere else for my coffee.
After some shocking dining experiences on King St, I was happy to find a cafe with great coffee, friendly staff and good food that's reasonably priced. The waiter was helpful and attentive, and the friendly rapport between him and the barista gave the cafe a lively ambience.
I'm quite particular about my coffee, and the barista seemed willing to accommodate, relishing the challenge. The smoked salmon sandwich I ordered arrived quickly, and was fresh and tasty. I’m very impressed with Anise, one of my new favourites in Newtown.
I was really impressed with all aspects of this friendly cafe on busy King St. The friendly barista greeted me and I was really impressed with how helpful she was. The food was also fabulous and well priced.
I was there for lunch and was pleasantly surprised that I could access the internet for free. A friend had recommended Anise to me as even from her second visit the barista knew her order, and I love that personal attention. This cafe is my new favourite in Newtown.
After quite a few years of sampling variable quality breakfast and coffee at the cafes along King St, it was refreshing to find a place with consistently good quality fare and friendly service. We discovered this place a month or two ago and repeat visits have left a similar impression.
The signature breakfast is excellent, the veggie patties being especially delicious. My girlfriend was most recently impressed by the "breakfast hot dog" which was an awesome German style hot dog with a twist. Coffee is generally excellent...drinkable on service unlike some of the other boiling hot beverages I am often forced to endure at other establishments. The waitress will often explain why a coffee is not perfect even when I think it is.
It can get quite busy on the weekend so if you're expecting instant service, ambient music and a kid-free environment while you eat your breakfast, look elsewhere. Wireless internet is a bonus, but if that's the main reason you go to a cafe you probably should stay at home and make your own coffee and breakfast.
I thought would try cafe out with wireless internet, tested about 1Mbps. Turns out it's one of the few good things at this cafe. When I walked in there was a person smoking inside the door, waiting for coffee, I thought nothing of it. When I sat down the table smelled of smoke/ashtrays, not very appetising.
I remembered this cafe from my last visit, how I remembered it was the blasting rock music. This time there was a tattooed waitress with high pitched voice singing along. Between songs loudly promoting her art business or something the entire time I was there. I couldn't wait to leave.
My waiter was good and friendly; no complaints. He didn't try and rush me at all. Coffee was ok, bit weak and milky. I have found that making your own coffee at home is one of few ways of getting a good coffee on King (there are a few good baristas on King Albertos? think name is). I ordered the Anise breakfast with eggs, tomato, halloumi cheese, veggie fritters, and bacon eggs for about $13. Eggs were perfect, bacon good, sausage good. The veggie patties were inedible, cheese was probably boiled, so it was sloppy and tasteless. The breakfast was ok/average, bit like entire cafe.
I will try and find a nice internet cafe somewhere else. This cafe has potential, and is shame about staff, food and ambience.
A newbie to Newtown last year, Anise was a very welcome find! I frequently pop down for breakfast or a light lunch and it has never failed to disappoint. The food is fresh and tasty - with more of a variety than your average cafe.
Service has always been excellent - in particular from a blonde British girl who is always very attentive and welcoming. Keep doing what you're doing!
I had a light breakfast there yesterday, plus two drinks, and paid $13 so it surprises me you paid that for coffee and a brownie. I don't recall anything on the menu being that expensive, and I looked right through it several times as I was very indecisive! Fantastic service, and very accommodating of our requests.
Not from Sydney, a friend tipped me off for a good cafe to eat in newtown, she was a regular and had never had a bad experience (they even know her name and coffee!) so I went along and everything was as described. The service was amazing, the best I've ever experienced in any establishment anywhere. My waitress, a bubbly blonde, knew the menu like the back of her hand and was ready to tell me her favorites.
My veggie breakfast was fantastic, my only qualm was that the spinach would have been more complimentary fresh, not cooked and the chefs were more than happy to accommodate my partners rather annoying lactose intolerance. All in all clean, friendly and relaxed. A great way to end 07. We'll be back for sure.
